To show a countdown before a prerecorded YouTube video, choose the right YouTube format: use a Premiere for YouTube’s built-in countdown, or use a countdown in the outgoing encoder feed if the event must be an encoder-based Live stream. YouTube documents countdown theme and duration controls for Premieres, but not an equivalent built-in selector for scheduled encoder streams.
Choose between a Premiere and an encoder-based Live stream

These are different workflows. A Premiere countdown is a YouTube presentation feature; it is not inserted into a prerecorded video file. For a true encoder-based Live stream, make the countdown part of the program feed or an encoder scene, and check the current instructions for the encoder you use.

Add YouTube’s built-in countdown with a Premiere
- In YouTube Studio, upload the video you want to show.
- Under Visibility, schedule it as a public video.
- Select Set as Premiere, then open Set up Premiere.
- Choose a countdown theme and countdown length, then finish scheduling.
- Share the Premiere watch page ahead of time. Viewers can visit, set reminders, and use chat and comments.
YouTube says the countdown begins at the scheduled time. When it ends, viewers watch the video together in real time. The countdown theme is not added to the video: after the Premiere, the upload remains a regular video without that countdown.

Use a countdown with a scheduled encoder-based Live stream
If the event must be an encoder-based Live stream, create or schedule it in YouTube Live Control Room and connect your encoder with the stream URL and stream key YouTube provides. YouTube’s cited guidance does not show a setting that adds a Premiere countdown to this type of stream. A practical option is to include a countdown clip or countdown scene in the feed sent by the encoder; the exact setup depends on the encoder, so follow its current documentation rather than assuming a particular button or feature.

Optional: add a trailer to the scheduled stream’s watch page
A trailer is separate from a countdown in the live feed. YouTube documents this route: open the scheduled stream in Live Control Room, choose Edit, then Customize, add the trailer, and save.
- YouTube’s stated eligibility is more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes.
- The trailer must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes long and meet YouTube’s supported video, rights, and Community Guidelines requirements.
Prepare and test before the scheduled start
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the stream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. Use that lead time to confirm that the event is configured as intended and that the feed is ready.

- Check the Live Control Room preview before the event.
- Test the setup and verify the stream’s visibility from both your channel and the watch page.
- Monitor audio and video quality while the encoder is running.
Fix common countdown problems
The countdown option is missing
Check whether you are setting up a Premiere. The countdown theme and length controls are documented in Premiere setup, not as a control for a regular scheduled upload or an encoder-based Live stream.

A scheduled encoder stream does not have the documented Premiere countdown selector. If you need the countdown to appear in that stream, check that the countdown is included in the outgoing encoder program; a watch-page trailer is a separate item.

The Premiere countdown is not part of the saved video
That is expected: YouTube’s Premiere countdown is part of the scheduled viewing experience, not part of the uploaded video. The upload remains a regular video after the Premiere.

For continuous prerecorded streaming, YouTube’s encoder guide also lists Gyre; that listing does not establish that it adds countdown functionality. YouTube lists AJA HELO Plus with optional PlayToStream support for scheduled prerecorded media as well, without establishing countdown functionality.
