How to Add a Countdown and Now-Playing Text to a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Add a countdown and now-playing overlay to a 24/7 YouTube stream using OBS, a playlist tool, or cloud playout. Includes setup steps and fixes for common problems.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add both elements in the video output before it reaches YouTube: build your playlist in OBS or a hosted playout service, then place a countdown and a now-playing overlay above the video. YouTube does not automatically read a playlist’s filenames and show the current title on screen. The exact setup depends on whether you want a fixed label or text that updates automatically, and whether your countdown is for a scheduled start or for transitions between videos.

Choose where the overlays will be made

For a local setup, OBS composes your video, playlist, and overlay sources into one stream. You then send that finished output to YouTube Live Control Room. A hosted playout service is an alternative if you do not want a computer and local connection to run continuously; overlay support varies, so check the service’s current specifications.

In either case, the playlist and overlay are separate functions. A playlist can play multiple videos without supplying a visible title label. The label must be added as a source or provided by a playlist tool that can read the current item.

Set up the looping video playlist in OBS

For one repeating video

  1. In OBS, select the scene that will carry the stream.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
  3. Create or select the source, enable Loop, and choose the video file.
  4. Confirm the video appears in the preview and size or position it as needed.

Media Source is the straightforward choice when a single clip should repeat. It is not a multi-item playlist.

For a playlist of local files

  1. Install a compatible version of VLC on the computer running OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed, and its architecture must be compatible with OBS.
  2. In the scene’s Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video.
  3. Add the media files to the playlist in the source’s properties.
  4. Set the playlist behavior: enable looping if it should repeat, and choose shuffle only if you want randomized rather than ordered playback.
  5. Check the source in the OBS preview. Confirm the intended first item, order, audio levels, and transition behavior before starting a long broadcast.

OBS documents loop and shuffle controls for VLC Video source; exact labels and availability can differ by OBS version. See the OBS media sources guide for current details.

Add the now-playing label

Static text

If the same wording can stay on screen throughout the stream, add a text source in OBS and place it above the video source in the Sources list. Enter the wording, then adjust its position, size, color, and background for readability. This is a fixed label; it will not change when the playlist advances.

Automatically updated title

To show the current filename or title as each playlist item changes, use a playlist tool that exposes current-item information. Two independent third-party OBS projects describe this kind of feature:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 24/7 Playout describes a Now/Next display with progress and remaining time. Its project documentation identifies a Windows x64 release and recommends OBS 32.x or compatible. Check its current release, operating-system support, OBS compatibility, and installation guidance before use: project repository.
  • OBS Playlist Deck describes an OBS dock that can show the current and next items and operate supported media sources. Its project page warns that its builds are unsigned. Review the project’s current compatibility and security information before installing: project repository.

These are third-party projects, not built-in OBS features. Their descriptions are not independent verification that a particular build works with your system. Do not assume that a text source can discover the active playlist item on its own.

Add a countdown that matches the event

First decide what the countdown is counting down to. A timer that reaches a scheduled broadcast start is different from a timer that resets between playlist videos. The source material for OBS and YouTube does not document a native OBS countdown widget with exact setup steps, so choose a maintained widget or script whose instructions explicitly support your OBS version and the countdown behavior you need.

  • For a scheduled start, verify that the timer targets the intended date, time, and time zone, and that it stops or changes as expected when the stream begins.
  • For between-video countdowns, verify that the tool can detect playlist transitions and state whether it counts down before every item, only between selected items, or on another schedule.
  • Preview the overlay in OBS and test a complete transition before relying on it during a continuous broadcast. Do not assume a timer automatically resets or runs indefinitely unless the selected implementation documents that behavior.

Put the countdown source above the video in the OBS Sources list. Arrange it so it does not obscure the now-playing text or important parts of the video.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create and choose Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or schedule the broadcast and select the encoder workflow.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube or the appropriate YouTube service option, and enter the stream URL and key if OBS prompts for them. Labels can vary by version.
  4. Start streaming in OBS. Check the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room, then follow its on-screen flow to make a scheduled broadcast live where required.
  5. Confirm that the video, audio, countdown, and now-playing label are all visible and synchronized in the YouTube preview.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not make an uninterrupted 24/7 archive a safe assumption. See YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions for its current workflow.

Keep a local 24/7 stream running reliably

A local OBS broadcast depends on the computer, OBS, the media files, and the internet connection continuing to work. Keep the machine powered, prevent sleep, and monitor the stream and playlist. Plan for interruptions rather than assuming the encoder or YouTube ingest will remain online continuously.

OBS explains that dropped frames can occur when the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its guidance says OBS drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. If you use YouTube’s HLS ingest specifically, YouTube documents 1–4 second segments, TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Those are HLS-specific requirements, not settings every OBS stream needs; HLS also has higher latency than RTMP. Details are in YouTube’s encoder help and the OBS dropped frames guide.

Common problems and fixes

  • The label never changes. A regular OBS text source is static. Use a playlist tool that documents current-item display, and verify that it supports your media source and OBS version.
  • The VLC playlist source is missing or will not load. Confirm VLC is installed and compatible with the OBS build’s architecture, then restart OBS and check the source properties.
  • The timer reaches zero at the wrong time. Check the target date, time zone, and whether the chosen widget is designed for a scheduled start or playlist transitions.
  • The overlay is hidden behind the video. Move the overlay source above the video source in the OBS Sources list, and check that it is visible and within the canvas.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream. Verify the selected YouTube server or service, stream URL, and key in OBS, then check Live Control Room for an incoming encoder signal. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  • OBS reports dropped frames. Check connection stability and whether the available upload capacity can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS may drop frames rather than buffer the stream when the connection cannot keep up.
  • The stream ends or the recording is unavailable. A YouTube archive is automatically created for streams under 12 hours according to YouTube Help; do not rely on that behavior for a 24/7 broadcast archive.

Copyright and monetization checks for a looping channel

Only stream video and audio you have the rights to use on YouTube. Permission to use a song or video in one context does not necessarily grant permission to rebroadcast it continuously. Review claims, licenses, and any restrictions attached to your content before building a long-running playlist. Reused or repetitive material can also affect eligibility under YouTube monetization policies; an always-on format is not an exemption. Check YouTube’s current channel monetization policies and the applicable rights terms for every playlist item.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a home computer or connection to run continuously, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service from Yorker Media for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the video in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
