How to Add a Column in Windows File Explorer

Add a file-property column in File Explorer’s Details view, then reorder or resize it. Column choices and populated values depend on Windows interface and file type.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To add a column in File Explorer, open the folder, switch to Details view, and select the file property you want from the column chooser. Depending on your Windows version, the chooser may be under View > Choose Details or available by right-clicking a column heading and choosing More.

Show the folder in Details view

Open the folder whose file list you want to change. Select View and choose Details. File properties appear in columns in this view; other layouts do not show the same column list. Microsoft’s general File Explorer help describes the available views for Windows 10 and Windows 11: File Explorer in Windows 10.

Choose and add a column

  1. In Details view, open the column chooser. In the older menu interface, select View > Choose Details. In interfaces without that menu, right-click one of the existing column headings and select More.
  2. Select the checkbox beside the property you want to display.
  3. Select OK to apply the change. To remove a column, clear its checkbox instead.

The exact labels vary across Explorer interface generations. Microsoft’s detailed instructions use the older Windows Explorer labels; its current general help covers File Explorer in Windows 10 and Windows 11 without documenting every current column-picker label. See Microsoft Support’s How to Change Column Settings in Windows Explorer.

Change the width

In the chooser, select a column and enter its width in pixels. You can also drag the boundary between column headings in the file list.

Which columns can you add?

Available properties depend on the folder and file types. Microsoft’s column-settings article lists options such as Owner, Name, Size, Type, Date Modified, Status, Attributes, Author, Title, Subject, Category, Pages, Comments, Copyright, Date Created, Date Accessed, Artist, Album Title, Year, Track Number, Genre, Duration, Bit Rate, Protected, Camera Model, Date Picture Taken, Dimensions, Company, Description, File Version, Product Name, and Product Version. Name, Size, Type, and Modified are enabled by default.

A property is useful only when the file type supports it and the relevant information exists. For example, a Word document can contain Author information while a Notepad document cannot. Microsoft notes that “Not all file formats will support these additional column settings.”

Why is a column missing or blank?

  • The folder is not in Details view: Switch to Details before looking for file columns.
  • The property is not available: Some properties apply only to certain file formats. A column chooser cannot add support that a format does not have.
  • The column is present but empty: The file may not contain that metadata. Changing the view will not create it.
  • The command is in a different place: Try the column-heading context menu and choose More if View > Choose Details is not shown.
