Before you install a Discord bot
Discord apps can be installed to a server or to an individual account. A server installation makes the app available to that server; an account installation is associated with your account and can be used across Discord spaces where supported. The installation type affects what the app can do and where you manage or remove it. Available options and capabilities vary by app, so read the authorization prompt instead of assuming all bots ask for the same access. Discord explains the different kinds of apps.

For a server installation, you need to own the server or have Manage Server. Discord says this permission allows members to add apps for everyone on the server to use. See Discord’s guidance on moderating apps.
How to add a bot to your Discord server
- Open the App Directory. Browse Discord’s App Directory and select an app, or open the app’s profile. Discord’s discovery guide describes how to find and add apps.
- Review the app before authorizing it. Read its overview and the permissions or access listed in the authorization prompt. Pay particular attention to requests that let it take server actions, such as creating channels, deleting messages, editing roles, or reading the audit log. Grant access only if it fits the app’s stated purpose.
- Choose the server. If Discord asks where to install the app, select the intended server. You must have the required permission for that server.
- Authorize the installation. Confirm the prompt after checking the requested access. A server-installed app should then appear in the server’s member list and in Server Settings > Integrations, under Bots and Apps in the current help interface.
- Review its permissions and commands. Open Server Settings > Roles to inspect the bot’s role permissions. Open Server Settings > Integrations to check the app’s command access and narrow it where needed.
What permissions should a Discord bot have?
There is no universal permission set that every bot needs. Match the access requested to the job you expect the app to perform. A moderation app may need specific moderation capabilities; a utility app may need fewer server permissions. Treat requests to manage roles, delete messages, create channels, or access sensitive server information as actions to assess against the app’s purpose, not as routine permissions to approve automatically.

Discord provides separate controls for bot permissions, Use External Apps, and Use Application Commands. In Server Settings > Integrations, you can restrict commands by role, member, channel, or individual command. Before making commands broadly available, inspect the command list and limit sensitive actions to the roles and channels that need them. AutoMod is a separate moderation control; it does not replace reviewing an app’s permissions or command access. Discord’s app moderation guide covers these controls.
Server installation and account installation compared
| Question | Installed to a server | Installed to an account |
|---|---|---|
| Who authorizes it? | The server owner or a member with Manage Server. | The individual Discord user, according to the app’s installation flow. |
| Where is it available? | In the server where it was installed. | Across Discord spaces where the app supports account installation. |
| What access might it request? | Depending on the app, server permissions for actions such as managing roles or messages, or access to server information. | Access associated with the user installation; review the authorization prompt because capabilities vary by app. |
| Where do you manage it? | Server Settings > Integrations, including command access, and Server Settings > Roles for role permissions. | User Settings > Authorized Apps for account authorization. |
| How do you revoke it? | Kick the bot user from the server’s member list. | Deauthorize it in User Settings > Authorized Apps. |
Discord’s developer documentation also distinguishes an app’s commands from a bot user: an app that does not need a bot user in a server may use the applications.commands scope without the bot scope. This is developer-facing detail; as a server owner, use the app’s installation prompt and documentation to understand the option presented to you. Read Discord’s application commands documentation.

How to remove a bot or revoke an app

Revoke an account-installed app
Open User Settings > Authorized Apps and deauthorize the app. This is the account-level removal path; kicking a bot from a server does not revoke an app authorization on your personal account.

What Discord’s 2026 app data-access update means
Discord announced that updated requirements for how apps access server data took effect on June 10, 2026. The change concerns developers’ access to information such as server members, presence, and message content. Discord said most apps would continue working, with additional guardrails for sensitive access. This is a developer-side policy change, not by itself a reason to assume an ordinary server app is broken. For the announcement and its current details, see Discord’s updated app data-access requirements.
