Claim and install it before departure; Opera says the plan starts automatically when the eSIM first connects to a network in the destination country. You need an unlocked, eSIM-compatible Android phone running Android 10 or newer.
Check eligibility and the free offer
The eSIM feature is in the latest Opera for Android; it is not available through Opera Mini or Opera GX mobile. Your phone must support eSIM, be carrier-unlocked, and run Android 10 or newer. If you are unsure whether your device is compatible or unlocked, ask your mobile operator.

Opera announced a free allowance of 3 GB for three days, with no payment details or email required. The promotion is limited to users in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Brazil, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Poland. This list describes where the free offer was announced, not the full service coverage. Opera says its eSIM service supports 47 destinations; free eligibility and destination coverage are separate. See Opera’s destination list and offer details.
Opera says the eSIM is powered by Holiday.com and connects to 5G where local networks support it, falling back to the next best available network quality where they do not. Actual connectivity depends on the destination and local network.

Claim and install the eSIM before you travel
- Update Opera. Install or update to the latest Opera for Android.
- Open the eSIM section. Tap the profile icon in Opera. It appears at the bottom right, or at the top right in tab-strip view. Scroll down and select eSIM.
- Claim the free data. Tap Claim now, select your destination country, and confirm. Opera’s flow then prompts you to install the eSIM.
- Install over a stable connection. Complete the installation before departure while connected to reliable internet. The exact prompts vary by phone model, so follow the on-screen instructions on your device.
Opera says claimed, unused free data can remain available for up to one year before the first destination-country network connection. This is the stated claim-and-use window for the free offer; it is not the validity period for paid plans. Follow the phone-specific installation flow described in Opera’s activation guide.
Activate it when you arrive
- Turn off airplane mode and check that the Opera eSIM is switched on in your phone’s SIM settings.
- Select the Opera eSIM as the line for mobile data.
- Turn off data roaming on your regular SIM to help avoid roaming charges from your usual carrier.
Opera says the eSIM activates automatically the first time it connects to a network in the destination country. That first connection starts the plan’s validity period; claiming or installing the eSIM before the trip does not start the three-day clock. If it does not connect, check that the Opera eSIM is enabled and selected for mobile data, then consult the phone’s SIM settings and Opera’s setup instructions.

Know what the eSIM does—and does not—cover
The Opera eSIM is data-only and works for the whole phone. It does not replace your existing number and does not provide local calls or SMS. Keep your regular SIM available for your number, but use the Opera eSIM for mobile data if that is your travel plan. Manage calls, texts, and roaming settings separately with your regular carrier.
Top up or use the eSIM on another stop
If you need more data, or are traveling to another supported destination, open eSIM in Opera, choose the destination, select a plan, and complete the purchase. Opera says additional plans are added to the eSIM already installed on your phone, so you do not need to install a new eSIM for each stop. You do need internet access to buy a plan; Opera recommends topping up before the current balance runs out or while connected to stable Wi-Fi.
