To activate a new Xfinity cable modem or Gateway, connect it to an active coax outlet and power, then use the Xfinity app while signed in as the account’s Primary user or a Manager. The app checks the connection and guides you through Wi-Fi setup. If you’re bringing your own modem, first verify that it’s approved for your service address and supports your speed tier.
Before you activate: choose your equipment and gather what you need
An Xfinity Gateway combines a modem and Wi-Fi router. A customer-owned modem may be an option, but Xfinity compatibility depends on your service address and speed tier. Check Xfinity’s approved-device information before buying or connecting one.

| Choice | Compatibility check | Wi-Fi equipment | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leased Xfinity Gateway | Use the Gateway provided for your Xfinity service. | Wi-Fi routing is built in; a separate router is not required. | Follow Xfinity’s Gateway setup and app flow. |
| Customer-owned modem | Confirm approval for your service address and speed tier using Xfinity’s compatibility information. | Most standalone modems need a separate router for Wi-Fi. | You’ll be responsible for maintaining, securing, and troubleshooting your own equipment. |
If you use a leased Gateway with a personal router, Xfinity says to enable Bridge Mode on the Gateway so both devices do not try to route the network. See Xfinity’s router and Bridge Mode guidance.

- ⚠️ CABLE INTERNET ONLY - NOT COMPATIBLE WITH: Fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, Satellite, or Fixed Wireless. ONLY works with cable providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox. Verify your internet type BEFORE purchase.
- 🚫 NO WiFi INCLUDED - ROUTER REQUIRED: This is a modem ONLY. You MUST buy a separate WiFi router to get wireless internet. Without a router, only ONE device can connect via Ethernet cable. This does NOT replace your current WiFi router.
- 🔌 CABLE INTERNET REQUIRED: Works EXCLUSIVELY with cable internet service (DOCSIS) from providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, or Cox. Will NOT work with fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless internet. Contact your ISP to confirm compatibility BEFORE purchasing.
- 🚀 MULTI-GIG PERFORMANCE: Supports internet plans up to 2.5 Gbps with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. Designed for plans 1 Gbps and faster from certified providers: Xfinity (up to 2.33 Gbps), Spectrum (1 Gbps), Cox (2 Gbps). Verify your plan speed and provider compatibility.
- 💡 SETUP REQUIREMENTS: You need: (1) Cable internet service, (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation. This modem cannot create WiFi networks or connect multiple devices without additional equipment.
How to activate your new Xfinity modem
- Connect the equipment. Attach the coax cable to an active cable outlet and the Gateway or modem, then finger-tighten both connections. Plug the power cord into the device and an outlet. Place the equipment with room around it; Xfinity recommends positioning it a few feet above the floor to help Wi-Fi coverage.
- Open the Xfinity app and sign in. Follow the activation prompt, or scan the activation QR code if one is provided. Xfinity requires the account’s Primary user or a Manager to activate the device. For a replacement Gateway without an on-screen prompt, go to Account → Set up equipment or devices → Xfinity Gateway or Modem under Internet.
- Run the connection check. Follow the app’s instructions as it checks whether the coax outlet is active. If it finds a connection, set or confirm the Wi-Fi network name and password.
- Finish setup and reconnect your devices. Confirm the settings and complete the app flow. If you’re replacing a Gateway, using the same Wi-Fi name and password can help existing devices reconnect without setting them up individually. Then connect your phone and other devices to the network.
Xfinity’s app activation guidance estimates the activation process at about 20 minutes and says home network setup can take up to 10 minutes after confirmation. These are estimates, not guaranteed completion times. Xfinity’s new-customer instructions say activation may take a few minutes.
What to do if activation fails
The app says the outlet is inactive
Try another coax outlet, if one is available, and run the app’s check again. If there is no working outlet, use the app to arrange a technician appointment.

The connection or activation flow stalls
Check that the coax cable is connected securely at the wall and device. For a new-customer activation that stalls, Xfinity recommends unplugging the Gateway for 30 seconds, plugging it back in, and trying again. If the app shows another error, use its option to contact an agent. See Xfinity’s activation troubleshooting steps.

For most orders, Xfinity says activation is available from the equipment arrival date through the following seven days. There is a stricter deadline if you have ported an Xfinity Voice number: activate on the assigned Firm Order Commitment date. Xfinity warns that missing that date could result in loss of dial tone or the number. The timing guidance is in its Getting Started Kit FAQ.
