To access a WordPress database, sign in to your hosting control panel, open its phpMyAdmin link, identify the database name in wp-config.php, and select that database in phpMyAdmin. Export a backup before changing any row or running SQL. The database contains posts, pages, comments, users, and settings, but it does not contain your themes, plugins, media uploads, or other WordPress files.

What phpMyAdmin does for a WordPress site
phpMyAdmin is a browser-based administrative tool for MySQL and MariaDB databases. WordPress stores most dynamic site data in a database, including posts, pages, comments, users, options, taxonomies, and plugin settings. phpMyAdmin lets you browse those tables, export them as an SQL file, import an SQL file, and make narrowly targeted edits.

One-click scans. No signup required.
It is not a complete WordPress file manager. A database export does not include the active theme, plugin code, images and other uploads, wp-config.php, or the rest of the WordPress installation. A full-site backup therefore needs a database copy and a separate copy of the WordPress files.
phpMyAdmin is a third-party administrative surface rather than a WordPress dashboard feature. Treat every login, export, and SQL change as a production-server operation.

Before you open the database
Confirm that your hosting account provides phpMyAdmin
Most managed hosting panels expose a phpMyAdmin link, but a host can disable it or replace it with another database interface. You need hosting-panel credentials or an administrator-provided database login. WordPress administrator credentials alone do not necessarily grant phpMyAdmin access.
Know which database you need
A hosting account can contain several databases for different sites, staging copies, applications, or old migrations. Do not select one by guessing from its name. Read the active installation’s DB_NAME value from wp-config.php.
Make a recovery copy first
Export the database before editing rows, changing URLs, resetting a user, changing permissions, or importing another database. WordPress recommends regular database backups and one before every upgrade. WordPress.org Developer Resources recommended keeping three to five recent backups in 2023. Store copies in separate locations and retain at least one copy outside the web server.
- Use a descriptive filename containing the site, database, and date, such as
example-db-2026-10-15.sql. - Do not leave an SQL export in
public_htmlor another web-accessible directory. - Keep the export until you have verified that the intended change worked and the site loads normally.
- For a full recovery plan, back up the WordPress files separately from the database.
Find the database name in wp-config.php
The wp-config.php file is normally in the WordPress installation directory. A document-root installation in cPanel commonly places it at a path such as /home/username/public_html/wp-config.php; subdirectory and staging installations use different paths.
- Open your hosting panel’s File Manager, or connect with SFTP.
- Navigate to the directory that contains
wp-admin,wp-content, andwp-includes. - Open
wp-config.phpin a text viewer or editor. Download a copy before editing it. - Locate the database constants. A typical configuration has entries similar to:
define( 'DB_NAME', 'database_name' ); define( 'DB_USER', 'database_user' ); define( 'DB_PASSWORD', 'database_password' ); define( 'DB_HOST', 'localhost' );
Record the values exactly. The database name and user can include a hosting-account prefix, and the host is not always localhost. Some installations use a separate port or a remote database hostname. Do not publish the password or paste it into a support forum.

The $table_prefix setting near the database constants identifies the beginning of WordPress table names. The default is often wp_, but an administrator may have changed it to another value. The prefix helps you recognize the correct tables; it is not proof that a database belongs to a particular site.

What each value is for
| Value | Purpose | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
DB_NAME |
Name of the database to select in phpMyAdmin | phpMyAdmin database list and WordPress connection |
DB_USER |
Database account WordPress uses | Database permissions and connection tests |
DB_PASSWORD |
Password for that database account | wp-config.php and any manual connection test |
DB_HOST |
Database server address, and sometimes a port | WordPress connection settings |
$table_prefix |
Prefix applied to WordPress table names | Identifying tables such as users and options |
Open phpMyAdmin from your hosting panel
cPanel
- Sign in to cPanel.
- On the Home screen, open Databases » phpMyAdmin.
- Wait for phpMyAdmin to open in the hosting session. Some hosts open it in a new tab.
The cPanel documentation page for phpMyAdmin was last modified on July 8, 2026. Labels and placement can still vary by host theme or account permissions. If the icon is missing, ask the hosting administrator whether phpMyAdmin is disabled, restricted to a particular network, or replaced by another tool.
Plesk, DirectAdmin, and other panels
These panels commonly provide an equivalent database link from a database-management page, but the exact label and navigation are host-specific. Look for a section named Databases, then an action such as phpMyAdmin, Manage, or Web database. A panel may show several databases and launch phpMyAdmin only after you choose one.
| Panel route | What to look for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| cPanel | Home » Databases » phpMyAdmin | Host can hide or disable the interface. |
| Plesk | Databases page, then a phpMyAdmin or management action | Label and permissions depend on the hosting provider. |
| DirectAdmin | Account-level database management, then phpMyAdmin | Some providers expose it only to administrators. |
| Other panels | Database section or a host-supplied phpMyAdmin URL | Use the host’s documented HTTPS address; do not guess a login endpoint. |
Do not send database credentials to an unverified third-party login page. Use the control-panel link or an HTTPS address supplied by your host.
Select the correct WordPress database
- In phpMyAdmin’s left navigation, expand the database list if it is collapsed.
- Find the exact value recorded as
DB_NAMEinwp-config.php. - Click that database name. Its tables should appear in the navigation and in the main pane.
- Check the table names against the installation’s
$table_prefix. With a custom prefix, tables may look likesite1_posts,site1_options, andsite1_usersrather than beginning withwp_.
If the name from wp-config.php does not appear, stop rather than selecting a similarly named database. You may be viewing the wrong hosting account, using a different WordPress copy, or lacking permission to see the database.

Recognize common WordPress tables
| Typical table | Stores | Why you might inspect it |
|---|---|---|
wp_posts |
Posts, pages, revisions, attachments, and some custom post types | Checking content records or a post status |
wp_postmeta |
Metadata associated with posts | Investigating plugin or custom-field data |
wp_options |
Site-wide settings and many plugin options | Checking a site URL or an option value |
wp_users |
User accounts and login-related fields | Locating an account during a documented recovery procedure |
wp_usermeta |
User roles and other user metadata | Auditing role-related metadata |
wp_comments and wp_commentmeta |
Comments and their metadata | Investigating comment records |
The names in this table use the default prefix for illustration. Replace wp_ with the actual prefix shown in your installation.
Export a database backup in phpMyAdmin
- Select the WordPress database in the left navigation.
- Open the Export tab.
- For a normal backup, use the quick export method and SQL format unless your host’s instructions require custom settings.
- Start the export and save the downloaded SQL file outside the public web root.
- Open the file or inspect its size enough to verify that a download occurred; keep the original unchanged.
For a large or heavily customized database, the hosting provider may recommend a custom export, compression, or command-line dump. phpMyAdmin upload and execution limits are set by the server; the exact maximum size is not established by the panel alone. A failed browser export or import does not prove that the database is corrupt.
Database-only versus full-site backup
| Backup set | Includes | Does not include |
|---|---|---|
| phpMyAdmin database export | Posts, pages, comments, users, options, taxonomy data, and database-backed plugin settings | Theme and plugin files, uploads, wp-config.php, WordPress core files, and server configuration |
| WordPress file backup | Core files, themes, plugins, media uploads, and wp-config.php |
Current database rows unless the database is exported separately |
| Full-site recovery set | Both a verified database export and a verified file backup | External services and DNS unless those are backed up separately |
Make a targeted change safely
Use phpMyAdmin only when you understand the field and the data format. A mistake in wp_options, user metadata, or a serialized value can disable the site or break a plugin. Always create a fresh export immediately before the change, even if you already have a scheduled backup.
Example: locating a user during a password-recovery procedure
WordPress’s documented phpMyAdmin password-reset procedure uses this navigation pattern:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Select the WordPress database.
- Open the users table, commonly
wp_usersbut using your actual prefix. - Choose Browse and locate the intended account.
- Use Edit on that row and change only the documented field required by the recovery procedure.
- Save the row, then test the login and remove any temporary access method.
Use this procedure at your own risk. Do not overwrite another user’s row, alter role metadata casually, or paste a plain-text password into a password field. WordPress password fields use a specific hashing format; follow the current WordPress documentation for the supported reset method rather than inventing a value.

Changing a site URL
A migration or domain change can require updates to URL values in the options table and in content or metadata. Take a database export first. URLs can also occur inside serialized PHP values, where a simple find-and-replace may make the serialized length incorrect and break the value. Use a migration-aware tool or a carefully tested procedure that understands serialized data. Verify the front end, administrator login, media, and internal links after the change.
Migrate a WordPress database with phpMyAdmin
Migration has two separate sides: exporting the source database and importing it into a destination database. The destination database and user should be created in the hosting panel’s MySQL Databases, Manage My Databases, or Database Wizard interface, not in phpMyAdmin. cPanel warns that creating them in phpMyAdmin can break the hosting account’s database mapping, backups, or restorations.
- On the source site, open phpMyAdmin and select the source database.
- Choose Export and save an SQL export.
- In the destination hosting panel, create the destination database and database user with the database wizard. Grant the permissions required by WordPress.
- Open phpMyAdmin for the destination account and select the empty destination database.
- Choose Import, select the SQL file, and run the import. cPanel’s migration workflow follows this select-database, choose-Import, select-file sequence.
- Update the destination
wp-config.phpwith the destinationDB_NAME,DB_USER,DB_PASSWORD, andDB_HOST. - If the domain or path changed, update the site URL using a method that handles serialized data correctly.
- Test the home page, administrator login, permalinks, media, forms, and key plugin functions before changing DNS or deleting the source.
An SQL import does not copy the site’s themes, plugins, uploads, or configuration file. Transfer those files separately and make sure the destination PHP and database versions satisfy the site’s requirements.
Fix common access and connection problems
There is no phpMyAdmin icon
The host may have disabled phpMyAdmin, limited it to an administrator network, or replaced it with another interface. Confirm that you are in the correct account and that your user has database-management privileges. Ask the host for its supported HTTPS database tool rather than installing an unapproved copy.
The database name is not listed
Reopen the active site’s wp-config.php and check for spelling, account prefixes, and staging paths. A database can be hidden from your panel user even when WordPress can connect to it. A host administrator may need to grant visibility or perform the export.

Access denied in phpMyAdmin
Being able to open phpMyAdmin does not guarantee permission to every database. Check that the panel account owns the database or that the database user has been assigned to it with the needed privileges. Do not create a second database just to make the error disappear.
WordPress reports “Error establishing a database connection” after a password change
If the database password was changed in the hosting panel, update the matching DB_PASSWORD in wp-config.php. Also verify DB_NAME, DB_USER, and DB_HOST. cPanel documents a command-line credential check using:
mysql -u db_user -p
Run it only in a shell where the command-line client is available, then enter the password at the prompt. A successful login tests the credentials but does not prove that the WordPress file contains the same values.
The import fails because the file is too large
Browser-based imports are constrained by PHP and web-server limits such as upload size, request time, and memory. The limit is host-specific. Ask the host for its supported large-database method, which may be a compressed import, a higher temporary limit, or a command-line restore. Do not repeatedly retry a partial import without checking whether tables were created; restore into a clean destination or follow the host’s recovery procedure.
The site is blank or broken after an edit
Restore the last verified SQL export if the database change caused the failure. If files were changed too, restore the matching file backup. Review the exact row and value changed, especially in wp_options, user metadata, and serialized fields. Keep the failed export and error details until the rollback is confirmed.
Secure phpMyAdmin access
- Use the hosting panel’s HTTPS login and avoid entering credentials over non-secure HTTP. WordPress documentation warns that unencrypted logins can expose credentials.
- Keep phpMyAdmin and its hosting environment updated in response to security announcements. phpMyAdmin publishes security notices; apply provider updates promptly.
- Restrict access to an administrator-only network or VPN when the host supports that control.
- Use separate, least-privilege database accounts where practical, and never post
DB_PASSWORDin screenshots, tickets, or public code. - Delete temporary SQL files from server storage after a verified backup and keep retained copies in protected locations.
- Log who made a production change, which database and table were affected, and how to restore the pre-change export.
phpMyAdmin should not be treated as a public application endpoint. If your host exposes it on a predictable URL, rely on the host’s authentication, network restrictions, and update process rather than attempting to obscure the path alone.

phpMyAdmin is useful for visual inspection, one-off exports, and carefully scoped edits. It is less suitable for very large databases, repeatable deployments, or changes that must be audited and tested across environments. For those jobs, use the hosting provider’s documented command-line backup or migration workflow, a tested WordPress-aware migration utility, or a staging environment. The method should still produce a recoverable database backup and preserve a separate copy of the WordPress files.
Quick Recap
| Task | phpMyAdmin suitability | Safer consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Identify the active database | Good: read DB_NAME and select the matching database |
Verify the prefix and installation path first |
| One-time SQL export | Good for small and moderate databases within host limits | Use the host’s large-database method when limits are reached |
| Inspect one row | Useful when the table and field are known | Back up first and change the smallest possible value |
| Repeated production deployments | Prone to manual mistakes | Use a tested, repeatable deployment process |
| Very large migration | May hit browser upload, memory, or timeout limits | Ask the host for command-line or server-side import |
Final verification checklist
- The selected database exactly matches
DB_NAMEin the activewp-config.php. - The visible tables use the expected
$table_prefix. - A fresh SQL export completed before the change and is stored outside the public web root.
- Any destination database and user were created with the hosting panel’s database wizard.
- After an import or edit, the site front end, login, media, permalinks, and critical forms were tested.
- Temporary exports and credentials are no longer exposed on the server or in logs.
