Yes—a different camera app can make your phone’s existing video controls easier to reach. Apps such as Final Cut Camera and Blackmagic Camera expose settings like shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and focus, but they cannot add camera hardware or make every phone support every format. Check compatibility against your exact phone model before choosing an app or expecting ProRes.
What a camera app can—and cannot—change
A dedicated video app can give you direct control over capture choices that a default camera interface may simplify or automate. Apple documents manual shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and focus in Final Cut Camera. Blackmagic Camera documents frame-rate, shutter-angle, white-balance, and ISO controls. Both also provide monitoring or other device-dependent settings.

Those controls can help you make settings consistent across shots, but an app does not upgrade the phone’s sensor, lens, or processing hardware. Nor does a manual-control interface mean that every phone can record every resolution, frame rate, or codec. Treat “pro-level” as a description of control and workflow, not a guarantee of a particular image quality or format.

Neither app is a universal winner. Start with your phone’s operating system and the control or workflow you actually need; then confirm the supported formats for that specific device.

Choose Final Cut Camera if its Apple workflow matches yours
Apple’s guide describes the app’s manual picture controls and a Live Multicam workflow that can connect up to four devices to Final Cut Pro for iPad. Check the guide for supported models and format requirements before planning a shoot around ProRes or ProRes RAW.
Choose Blackmagic Camera if its device-specific controls suit your setup
Blackmagic Design documents the app for iOS and Android, but its feature set is not identical across platforms and phones. Consult the specifications for your operating system and device rather than assuming an Android phone has the same codecs or options as an iPhone.

Check phone and format compatibility before recording
For ProRes in Final Cut Camera, Apple’s guide requires a supported iPhone model for the relevant options. Apple’s ProRes support page says recording requires iOS 15.1 or later and lists eligible models from iPhone 13 Pro through iPhone 17 Pro. Supported resolution and frame rate depend on the model and available storage, so a general app listing is not enough to confirm your intended recording mode. Check Apple’s current ProRes support details for the exact model and format.
Apple says iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro models can record ProRes directly to connected external storage. If you plan to use a drive, verify compatibility and the requirements for your model and recording setup first; external recording is not a universal ProRes workaround for other phones.

Apple announced Final Cut Camera 2.4 on September 29, 2026. The announced features include variable-aperture support on iPhone 18 Pro and, with iOS 27, scopes, clean SDI out, and genlock offset. Set up a first test before an important shoot
- Identify your exact phone and operating-system version. Confirm the model in the phone’s settings, then compare it with the app’s current platform-specific documentation.
- Pick the control you want. For example, choose manual focus if you need to prevent focus shifts, or set white balance when you want color to remain consistent across takes. Confirm the control is available on your phone.
- Choose a supported recording format. Check the app documentation and your phone’s format limits. Do not select ProRes or ProRes RAW solely because an app lists it; model support matters.
- Record and review a short test clip. Check focus, exposure, color, audio, file playback, and available storage before committing to a longer recording.
- Add accessories only to solve a defined need. For a supported iPhone ProRes workflow, verify the external-storage requirements for your model. If audio is the issue, check the app’s microphone support and confirm your phone recognizes the chosen microphone before filming.
What to tell someone recommending exact settings
App recommendations and recording settings depend on the phone model, operating system, and intended format. Share those details—and whether you need a particular codec, external storage, or a multicamera workflow—before asking for a specific setup. Without them, advice about a particular app feature or ProRes mode may not apply to your device.
