You cannot use LinkedIn’s general self-service API access to retrieve arbitrary people’s profiles. OpenID Connect provides limited information about the member who signs in; fuller Profile API access is restricted to developers LinkedIn approves. Any request also depends on the member’s authorization where required, privacy settings, granted permissions, and the data-use terms for the API product.
What LinkedIn API access can return
LinkedIn requires applications to be authorized and authenticated before they fetch data or access member information. Its documented Open Permissions are available without special approval; many other permissions and partner programs require LinkedIn’s explicit approval. Check the current Getting Access to LinkedIn APIs page for the permissions available to your application.

OpenID Connect: basic information about the signed-in member
For the general OpenID Connect product, the profile permission covers the authenticated member’s name, headline, and photo. The email permission covers that member’s primary email address. These are limited identity and sign-in scopes, not a general search or export interface for public profiles. The permission descriptions are on LinkedIn’s Sign In with LinkedIn using OpenID Connect documentation.
Profile API: restricted access to profile data
The separate Profile API is restricted to developers approved by LinkedIn. The fields and permissions available to an application depend on its approval and applicable agreements, and results remain subject to member privacy settings. LinkedIn documents GET https://api.linkedin.com/v2/me for requesting the authenticated member’s profile with an authenticated access token. This does not make the endpoint an unrestricted way to look up other members. See the Profile API documentation.

How to request a member’s data
Use the authorization flow and permissions documented for the specific LinkedIn API product you have access to. For member-level access, the member must authorize the application before it can act on their LinkedIn resources.
- Confirm access and scope. In LinkedIn’s developer portal, check the application’s approved products and permissions. Request only the scopes needed for the feature; do not assume that a sign-in permission includes Profile API access.
- Have the member authorize the app. LinkedIn documents OAuth 2.0 for authorization and API authentication. In member authorization, also called three-legged OAuth, the member approves the requested access before the application calls LinkedIn on their behalf. Follow the current OAuth 2.0 overview and authorization documentation.
- Call only an endpoint allowed by the approved product. For an approved Profile API integration requesting the authenticated member, LinkedIn documents
GET https://api.linkedin.com/v2/me. Use the access token and fields permitted for that application. - Apply the data rules before retaining or displaying results. Check the relevant API documentation and your application’s agreement for storage, use, transfer, and display restrictions. OAuth approval is not a blanket license for other purposes.
LinkedIn also documents application authorization, or two-legged OAuth, for certain application-level permissions. It does not replace member authorization when a permission requires access on a member’s behalf, nor does it grant unrestricted profile access. Choose the flow specified for the permission and API product; see the OAuth 2.0 overview.

Can you retrieve someone else’s profile?
Access to another member’s profile is more restricted than access to the authenticated member’s own profile. LinkedIn says the Profile API requires that other member’s Person ID, which is available only through certain limited-access APIs. A request is also subject to that member’s privacy settings; the documented conditions exclude members who have limited Off-LinkedIn Visibility. This is not a general-purpose profile lookup endpoint. LinkedIn describes these limits in its Profile API documentation.
Do not treat a profile visible on the website as data that your application is automatically permitted to collect through an API. API eligibility, member privacy, and the applicable agreement all constrain what a particular integration may request and do with returned data.

Can you store or reuse retrieved profile data?
LinkedIn’s Profile API documentation draws a specific line between the authenticated member and other members: data returned for the authenticated member may be stored only with that member’s permission, while data returned for members other than the authenticated member may never be stored under that API guidance. Confirm whether your particular API agreement adds or clarifies requirements before retaining any data.
Purpose restrictions can apply even after a request succeeds. LinkedIn’s restricted-use guidance for Marketing APIs and data gives examples of prohibited uses beyond managing LinkedIn Pages or Profiles through the application, including advertising, sales prospecting, lead generation, CRM enrichment, marketing automation, recruiting, audience lists, and ad targeting. It also restricts transfer or export and where data may be displayed. These Marketing API rules should not be generalized without checking the product and agreement governing your integration, but they illustrate why permission to retrieve data is not permission to repurpose it.

Check API versions before deployment
Permissions, available programs, supported fields, and API versions can change. Check the developer portal, current access documentation, and migration guidance when implementing or maintaining an integration. LinkedIn’s restricted-use page states that Marketing API version 202510 is scheduled to sunset on October 15, 2026. That lifecycle notice applies to that version, not to all LinkedIn APIs. If your application uses it, verify the supported version and migration requirements before deployment.
