How to Access Etsy Product, Shop, and Search Data Through the Official API

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Etsy product, shop, or keyword-search data, use Etsy Open API v3 and the access level that matches your use case. Do not build an unauthorized browser scraper: Etsy’s API documentation says screen-scraping is not allowed, and its API Terms of Use, updated June 16, 2025, prohibit automated access, analysis, or scraping unless Etsy has expressly authorized it in writing.

The API can return structured listing and shop data and supports keyword queries and pagination. It does not promise to reproduce Etsy’s consumer search rankings or every field shown in the website interface. This guide explains how to choose an access path, authenticate, retrieve permitted data, and handle the limits without treating a screenshot as a substitute for API access.

What “scraping Etsy” can—and cannot—mean

If you need listing or shop records for a permitted application, the supported route is Etsy Open API v3. It is a REST API for Etsy marketplace and shop workflows, with documented listing and shop resources, keyword query parameters, authentication requirements, and response schemas.

That is different from automating a browser to copy pages or extracting data from Etsy’s consumer website. Etsy’s API Terms of Use state: “Use or promote the use of automated systems or browser extensions to access, analyse, or scrape the Etsy Site, the Etsy API or any Etsy data, including but not limited to Etsy listings, shops, or user profiles, unless expressly authorised in writing by Etsy.” Do not assume that public visibility, low request volume, or a browser automation library makes access permitted. If a use case depends on automated access outside the documented API, obtain express written authorization from Etsy first.

Etsy’s current Dev MCP documentation reports 90+ endpoints and 50+ data models. Treat those counts as documentation-current rather than fixed: the API evolves, and the reference is the authority for the endpoint, parameters, and scopes available when you build.

Choose an access path before writing code

The right application type depends on whose shop data you need and how broadly the application will be used. Etsy distinguishes Seller App, Personal App, and Commercial Access; they are not interchangeable permission labels.

Access path Best fit Approval and scope implications
Seller App A tool for an individual seller’s own shop Approval is described as automated for eligible sellers.
Personal App A tool used by other buyers or sellers at limited scale It is the starting point for limited-scale applications.
Commercial Access An application needing broader seller coverage Request it after a Personal App; Etsy reviews requests manually.

Before applying, write down whether the product reads only one seller’s shop or serves multiple consenting sellers, and whether it is read-only or needs private-data or write permissions. Those decisions affect the app type, OAuth scopes, and approval burden. Commercial use also brings API Terms, caching, branding, OAuth, and approved-use obligations; commercial access is not permission to bypass the API.

Register and authenticate with the official API

  1. Register the matching app type. Start in Etsy’s Developer Portal and choose the path that matches your app’s users and intended coverage.
  2. Protect the credentials. Store the app keystring and shared secret in server-side configuration or a secret manager. Do not embed them in browser JavaScript, a public repository, or client-side mobile code.
  3. Send the API key on HTTPS requests. Etsy Open API v3 uses HTTPS and an x-api-key header containing the app keystring and shared secret.
  4. Add OAuth where the operation requires it. OAuth bearer authorization is required for scoped private-data access and write operations. Request only the scopes the application actually needs, and follow Etsy’s current OAuth instructions for token acquisition and handling.
  5. Use documented resources and parameters. Look up the current listing, shop, or search operation in the API reference, then use its exact path, required parameters, scopes, and response schema. Do not infer an endpoint from a URL displayed in Etsy’s consumer website.

Etsy’s current API reference does not publish endpoint paths, OAuth token URLs, or exact scope names here, and those details can change. For that reason, the examples below deliberately take the full operation URL and any OAuth token from your secure runtime configuration rather than inventing an endpoint. Set them from the current Etsy API reference before running the request.

Make a documented listing, shop, or keyword request

Set ETSY_API_URL to the exact HTTPS URL for the documented operation you selected, including any required path. Supply its documented query parameters. For a keyword query, use the operation’s documented keyword parameter; for a shop or listing lookup, provide the required identifier parameters. The API reference’s response schema tells you which fields are actually returned.

cURL

export ETSY_API_URL='https://<exact-operation-url-from-current-etsy-api-reference>'
export ETSY_API_KEY='<app-keystring-and-shared-secret>'
curl --fail-with-body --get "$ETSY_API_URL"
  --header "x-api-key: $ETSY_API_KEY"
  --data-urlencode 'limit=25'
  --data-urlencode 'offset=0'

Replace the URL and query parameters with those documented for the operation. Include a keyword parameter only where that operation supports it. The angle-bracket values are configuration instructions, not Etsy-issued credentials or endpoint names.

Python

import os
import requests

url = os.environ["ETSY_API_URL"] # Exact HTTPS operation URL from Etsy's current API reference
api_key = os.environ["ETSY_API_KEY"]
params = {
    "limit": 25,
    "offset": 0,
    # Add only query parameters documented for this operation, such as its keyword parameter.
}

response = requests.get(
    url,
    headers={"x-api-key": api_key},
    params=params,
    timeout=30,
)
response.raise_for_status()
data = response.json()
print(data)

Node.js

const url = new URL(process.env.ETSY_API_URL);
url.searchParams.set('limit', '25');
url.searchParams.set('offset', '0');
// Add only query parameters documented for this operation.

const res = await fetch(url, {
  headers: { 'x-api-key': process.env.ETSY_API_KEY },
  signal: AbortSignal.timeout(30000),
});
if (!res.ok) {
  throw new Error(`Etsy API returned ${res.status}: ${await res.text()}`);
}
const data = await res.json();
console.log(data);

These examples cover the API-key header and the documented collection pagination parameters, but they are not a substitute for the operation-specific reference. If the operation requires OAuth, send the valid bearer token as required by Etsy’s current documentation and request the corresponding scope through the approved flow; do not treat the app key as a replacement for OAuth.

Paginate results and collect only what you need

Collection URLs support limit and offset pagination. Use the operation’s documented maximum page size rather than assuming that an arbitrarily large limit is accepted. Fetch pages by advancing the offset, stop when the response indicates there are no more records, and avoid requesting the same range repeatedly unless you need a refresh.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose a page size allowed by the current operation’s reference.
  2. Request the first page with offset=0.
  3. Save the returned records and advance the offset by the number of records processed.
  4. Continue until the collection is exhausted, handling errors and retries in accordance with Etsy’s current rate and caching policies.
  5. Persist only fields required for the stated purpose, and apply the API’s caching rules to stored data.

Pagination retrieves an API collection; it does not guarantee a complete mirror of Etsy. Access scope, documented filters, the response schema, and API policies define what your application may obtain and retain.

What keyword search does not guarantee

The API reference documents keyword filtering and listing/shop resources. That supports queries against documented API operations, not a claim that an application can reconstruct Etsy’s website search page exactly. Etsy’s privacy-policy material describes the consumer search engine as returning relevant matches for a member’s query and potentially highlighting shops or listings. That describes the consumer experience; it is not evidence that API results expose the same ranking, personalization, or every visible search-page field.

Build around the fields and filters in the API schema. If the product requirement is to reproduce a particular user’s personalized results, the order shown in the consumer UI, or details visible only on a rendered page, treat availability as unestablished unless Etsy’s current documentation or written authorization confirms it. Do not fill gaps by scraping the website.

Compliance details for applications

  • Purpose and approval: Keep the application aligned with the use case approved for its access path. Broader seller coverage requires the Commercial Access request and manual review described by Etsy.
  • Terms and caching: Follow the API Terms and Etsy’s current caching policies. Do not treat successful API authentication as a waiver of usage restrictions.
  • OAuth: Use OAuth for the private-data and write operations that require scoped authorization. A seller’s consent does not itself justify access outside documented API permissions.
  • Attribution: Include Etsy’s required wording in the application: “The term ‘Etsy’ is a trademark of Etsy, Inc. This application uses the Etsy API but is not endorsed or certified by Etsy.”
  • Maintenance: Recheck the current API reference, Dev MCP documentation, terms, and policies when changing endpoints or capabilities; endpoint names, scopes, and policies can change.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • Authentication rejected: Confirm the x-api-key value is the app keystring and shared secret in the required form and that the request is HTTPS. For operations requiring OAuth, check that the bearer token is valid and the requested scopes cover the operation.
  • Permission or scope error: Verify the registered app type, the current operation’s scope requirements, and whether your access path covers the requested seller data. Do not attempt to work around a denial by switching to browser automation.
  • Bad request: Compare the URL, parameter names, value formats, and required fields against the current operation reference. A consumer-site URL is not an API endpoint.
  • Empty results: Check that the documented keyword parameter is being sent to an operation that supports it, and confirm the query and filters are meaningful. Do not interpret an empty API response as proof that the corresponding consumer search page has no results.
  • Repeated or missing records: Inspect the offset progression and the number of records actually returned on each page. Follow the operation’s pagination behavior rather than assuming every page is full.
  • Slow or intermittent requests: Use finite client timeouts, avoid unnecessary duplicate queries, and follow Etsy’s current rate and caching policies. The current API reference does not establish a universal request quota or response-time guarantee.

Performance, freshness, and operating cost

For reliable collection, request only the fields needed by your feature, paginate deliberately, and cache only as Etsy permits. A cache can reduce repeated work, but it also affects freshness; set its behavior to meet the approved use case and current policy rather than promising real-time completeness. The API documentation and policies are the source for applicable rate and cache limits; no single quota or freshness interval is established here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design for changing schemas and failures: validate responses against the fields your application consumes, log status and operation details without logging secrets, and make retries bounded so a transient failure does not become a request loop. Revisit the API reference before deploying changes that rely on new endpoint names, scopes, or fields.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an Etsy data API. Do not use it to collect Etsy pages or bypass Etsy’s API and Terms; automated access to Etsy still requires the applicable authorization. For a page you own or are authorized to capture, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its clean-shot steps accept consent banners and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents.

Example capture of ScreenshotNeo’s own homepage—not an Etsy endpoint:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://screenshotneo.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. Free includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
