If you can’t reach or change BIOS/UEFI settings, first identify what is blocking you: a missed startup key, a firmware password, read-only settings, a drive-password prompt, or a setting controlled by an organization. The safe fix depends on that symptom and on who owns or manages the computer. Use the documented entry route for ordinary access problems; for a password or managed restriction, contact the authorized owner, IT administrator, or the computer maker rather than trying to defeat the protection.
Identify what kind of access problem you have
“BIOS” is still the familiar name for the firmware setup screen, though most modern PCs use UEFI. Before troubleshooting, note the computer’s manufacturer, full model, approximate age, operating system, ownership, and the exact message or prompt. These details help distinguish an entry problem from a security restriction.

A Windows sign-in password or PIN, a BitLocker recovery prompt, a power-on password, a drive password, and a firmware setup password are different controls. How to enter BIOS or UEFI when no password is involved
Use the documented startup key
Check the manual or support page for the exact computer model; the key and timing vary by maker. Microsoft lists F1, F2, F12, and Esc as examples, not as a universal sequence. Follow the maker’s instructions on when to press the key and whether to tap or hold it. If the keyboard does not respond early enough, check the manufacturer’s guidance for startup timing and keyboard behavior.

Open UEFI settings from Windows
On supported Windows systems, choose Start > Power, hold Shift, and select Restart. Then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings, followed by Restart. The option may be unavailable on some systems; if it is missing or sends the PC back to Windows, use the model’s documented startup method and consult its manual. Microsoft describes both routes in its Windows instructions for accessing UEFI firmware settings.
What to do when firmware asks for a password
A password prompt is a restriction, not a sign that you need a different startup key. A supervisor or administrator password may control entry to setup or permission to change settings; a power-on password may appear during startup; a storage-drive password protects access to the drive. Exact labels and behavior differ across manufacturers and models.

- Work or school computer: Contact the organization’s IT administrator. Do not try to remove or evade its firmware controls.
- Someone else’s computer: Ask the owner to enter the credential or arrange authorized support.
- Personally owned computer: Use a password you are authorized to use, then contact the manufacturer’s support team for the exact model if it has been forgotten. Have proof of ownership available if requested.
There is no universal reset method. For one covered product family, Lenovo says clearing CMOS may not remove a forgotten supervisor password. Guidance for a different Lenovo product describes a service route that may require system-board replacement, proof of purchase, and a fee. Those are product-specific outcomes, not a rule for every Lenovo computer or other manufacturers. Check the current instructions for your exact model: Lenovo password guidance and Lenovo service guidance for its covered product. Do not assume that disconnecting a battery, removing a CMOS battery, shorting a jumper, flashing firmware, or replacing a part will clear a password.

When setup opens but changes are blocked, a local supervisor or administrator password may limit what you can edit. On supported Windows devices, firmware options can also be managed through Microsoft Intune BIOS configuration or Device Firmware Configuration Interface (DFCI). These capabilities depend on the device’s hardware, OEM tools, and management setup; they are not available or used identically on every PC. Some business systems have additional OEM-specific authentication. For example, HP describes Sure Admin for applicable systems in its HP Sure Admin documentation. If an employer or school owns or manages the computer, send IT the setting you need, why you need it, and any deadline. A local workaround may conflict with policy or be reversed by management.

Secure Boot helps a PC start using firmware trusted by its manufacturer. Its location and the steps to change it vary by maker. A change to Secure Boot, boot mode, or another firmware option can affect whether the operating system starts and may disrupt recovery workflows.
