How to Access a Synology or QNAP NAS Remotely Without Exposing It to the Internet

Keep your NAS behind the router and use a VPN or vendor relay for remote access. For Plex, check exact-model compatibility and whether your media requires transcoding.

You can reach files on a Synology or QNAP NAS remotely without opening its management or file-sharing services to the public internet. Keep the NAS behind your router, then use a VPN or the vendor’s relay-based service: Synology QuickConnect or QNAP myQNAPcloud Link. If Plex is involved, treat secure remote access and the NAS’s ability to run Plex as separate decisions.

Why remote access does not require putting the NAS on the public internet

Remote access means a device outside your home or office can reach files or services on your network. It does not require the NAS itself to be directly exposed. QNAP’s official Product Security guidance states: “You should never directly connect the network port of the NAS to the Internet.” It recommends placing the NAS behind a router and disabling UPnP, DMZ and port forwarding.

Port forwarding maps a public router port to a service on the NAS. That can make the service reachable from outside, but it also increases exposure. Changing the port number does not remove that exposure. Synology’s guidance is to open only the public ports needed for the services you intend to use; avoid opening ports just to make remote access work if a VPN or relay meets your needs.

Set a safer baseline before enabling remote access

Remote access is only one part of NAS security. A VPN or relay does not replace updates, strong account controls, or careful permissions.

  • Install software updates. QNAP recommends enabling automatic updates.
  • On Synology, use Security Advisor, deactivate the default admin account, and review user and shared-folder permissions.
  • Give remote users access only to the accounts, folders and services they need.

Synology lists QuickConnect, DDNS and port forwarding as distinct external-access methods. A router or ISP change may mean you need to update external-access settings.

Choose a remote-access method

The right method depends on how much setup you want to manage, which applications need access, how many locations are involved, and whether speed or convenience matters more. None of the methods makes account security, updates or least-privilege permissions unnecessary.

Method How it works Trade-offs and useful fit
Router VPN A remote device joins the private network through the router. QNAP describes this as relatively simple, but router hardware and supported features can limit the setup. Performance depends on the router and the VPN it supports. It can suit users comfortable configuring their router.
NAS-hosted VPN The NAS terminates the VPN connection. Requires more configuration. QNAP notes integration with QuFirewall and login-failure notifications and auto-blocking. It may suit users who regularly need access to many files.
Synology QuickConnect Synology detects the connection route and can use its relay if a direct connection is unavailable. Avoids manual port-forwarding setup. Relay connections can be slower, and some regions or ISPs may restrict relay use. Third-party applications are unsupported. Synology says SSL must be enabled for end-to-end encryption.
QNAP myQNAPcloud Link Provides remote access without exposing the NAS or forwarding ports. Designed for easier setup and access control. QNAP notes that connections may slow at peak use; its FAQ recommends a VPN to improve speed and connection security.
Site-to-site VPN or SD-WAN Connects separate networks or locations. Relevant for businesses with multiple sites or remote backup needs. QNAP notes additional equipment and setup requirements.
Port forwarding Maps a public router port to a NAS service. Creates direct exposure to the service. QNAP advises against exposing the NAS, while Synology advises opening only ports required for intended services. A nonstandard port is not a substitute for reducing exposure.

Use Synology QuickConnect without assuming every route is identical

QuickConnect avoids the need to configure manual port forwarding. It may connect directly, or route traffic through Synology’s relay when direct access is unavailable. Those routes can differ in speed and availability: relayed connections may be slower, and some regions or ISPs may restrict relay connections. Synology also says third-party applications are not supported through QuickConnect.

For end-to-end encryption, Synology says SSL must be enabled. QuickConnect is a routing convenience, not a reason to skip account security or permissions. Check Synology’s current external-access and security guidance for the settings that apply to your device and services.

Use QNAP myQNAPcloud Link without port forwarding

QNAP’s FAQ describes Link as a way to reach the NAS without forwarding ports or exposing the NAS to the internet. Its guidance calls for disabling Auto Router Configuration/UPnP port forwarding, enabling Link, and setting access control.

QNAP describes two access-control choices: private access limited to the owner’s account, and customized access limited to specified accounts. Choose the narrower option that fits the people who need access. QNAP notes Link may slow during peak use; its FAQ recommends VPN for better speed and connection security.

Configure Plex secure connections deliberately

Plex Media Server’s secure-connections setting defaults to Preferred. In that mode, Plex uses a secure connection when one is available, but may allow a regular HTTP connection if a secure one is unavailable. The default therefore does not guarantee that every connection is encrypted under every configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Required demands a secure connection, but some Plex apps may then be unable to connect. If you change this setting, verify that the clients you use can still reach the server. Secure connections address the connection between Plex components; they do not determine whether a NAS is safe to expose through router ports.

Decide whether the NAS stores Plex media or hosts Plex Media Server

A NAS can hold a media library without running Plex Media Server. If Plex runs on a separate computer, the NAS decision is primarily about storage capacity and the ecosystem you prefer. If the NAS itself hosts the server, check compatibility and performance for the exact model and your intended playback workload before buying.

Check model compatibility first

Plex supports some NAS products from Synology and QNAP, but support is not universal across either manufacturer’s range. Consult Plex’s current NAS compatibility list for the exact model rather than assuming a brand or bay count guarantees support.

Work out whether Plex will need to transcode

Direct play is possible when the playback client can handle the media as stored. Transcoding may be needed if the client cannot play the file’s format, resolution, bitrate or codec, if subtitles require video processing, or if a remote or shared user requests a lower-quality stream. Transcoding is a major CPU demand; many low-power ARM-based NAS models cannot transcode video.

For each intended client and remote user, consider the media formats, subtitle use, requested quality, available remote bandwidth and number of simultaneous viewers. If the NAS cannot transcode a stream, playback may still work when the client can directly play the file and the connection can carry its full bitrate.

Use this checklist before enabling access or choosing a NAS

  1. Keep the NAS behind a router and disable unnecessary UPnP, DMZ and port forwarding.
  2. Choose a router VPN, NAS-hosted VPN, QuickConnect or myQNAPcloud Link based on the applications and people that need access, setup effort, locations and expected performance.
  3. Set account access and folder permissions for named users rather than granting broader access than needed.
  4. Enable updates and apply the security recommendations for your NAS platform.
  5. If using QuickConnect, enable SSL for end-to-end encryption and account for possible relay delays or restrictions.
  6. If using QNAP Link, disable Auto Router Configuration/UPnP port forwarding, enable Link and select private or customized access control.
  7. If running Plex on the NAS, confirm exact-model compatibility and assess direct-play and transcoding needs for your media and clients.
  8. After a router or ISP change, check whether the external-access configuration needs updating.

Vendor guidance and compatibility lists can change. Confirm the current instructions and exact-model support for your device before changing network settings or buying a NAS.
