Your donation plugin creates the form and connects it to payment processors; the processors’ country, currency, account and payment-method rules determine which transactions can go through. GiveWP is one documented option with Stripe and PayPal integrations.
What you need to accept donations internationally
Think of the setup as three parts: the WordPress donation form, the payment account or accounts connected to it, and the legal organization receiving the funds. A donor’s country is only one factor. The connected processor must support your organization’s account, the donor’s payment method and the relevant currency.
- Donation plugin: creates forms, records donations and connects payment gateways. GiveWP’s WordPress.org listing describes customizable forms that can be added with a block, shortcode, widget or single-form page.
- Payment processor: handles the payment and applies its own country, verification, currency and method rules. Check the current Stripe or PayPal requirements for the country where your organization is based.
- Eligible charitable organization: must be able to receive and use donations for the stated purpose under applicable rules. A payment form does not establish that a donation is tax-deductible.
GiveWP’s listing says PayPal Donations can accept worldwide donations. That does not mean every donor, account, currency or transaction is guaranteed to work: PayPal and Stripe availability and requirements vary by account and country.
Choose a setup that fits your organization
| Option | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| GiveWP with Stripe and/or PayPal | Organizations that need donation forms, donor records and gateway connections in WordPress. | Which gateways, currencies and payment methods are enabled for your account and form. GiveWP also lists offline donations and additional gateways. |
| A simple PayPal/Stripe button plugin | A small site that needs separate buttons with their own language and currency. | Whether its features meet your needs for donor records, recurring gifts, receipts, refunds and reporting. The WordPress.org listing describes per-button language and currency options; verify other capabilities in the current plugin documentation. |
| A country-routing extension for GiveWP | A site used by legally distinct charities that need donations routed to different PayPal Business accounts by country. | The documented extension requires GiveWP and PayPal Donations and does not cover other GiveWP gateways. Confirm its current prerequisites and routing rules before relying on it. |
Compare solutions against the needs that affect your donors and finance team: donor-country coverage, display and settlement currencies, cards and alternative payment methods, recurring donations, fees and conversion costs, refunds, webhooks, receipts, exports, tax-receipt requirements and the number of legal entities receiving funds. Processor fees and settlement timing depend on the account and transaction; check current processor documentation for your organization rather than relying on a generic figure.

Check legal and account eligibility first
Before building the form, confirm that your organization can accept charitable payments in its home country and in the jurisdictions it plans to target. Stripe says donations must be tied to a specific charitable purpose and that organizations must comply with local laws. Stripe also distinguishes donations from tips for goods or services, and excludes personal or peer-to-peer money transmission from the charitable-donation model.
Verify your organization’s status and payment-account eligibility directly with Stripe or PayPal. Also check any applicable registration, tax, sanctions and fundraising rules for the organization and the countries where donors may be located. If you cannot confirm that a processor supports your organization or use case, do not assume that installing a plugin makes it eligible.

Connect a gateway and prepare the donation form
- Install and configure the donation plugin. With GiveWP, create a donation form and choose how to publish it: a block, shortcode, widget or single-form page.
- Open and verify the payment accounts. Complete the processor’s organization verification and confirm account-country eligibility, settlement currency and any required charitable documentation.
- Connect the processor in WordPress. In GiveWP, open the Payment Gateways settings and follow its Stripe or PayPal connection instructions. GiveWP’s Stripe guide includes account connection and webhook configuration.
- Configure webhooks where required. Follow the plugin and processor instructions so payment events can be reported back to the site. Check the connection status and resolve any setup warnings before accepting live donations.
- Enable the gateway on the form. Connecting an account does not necessarily make it available on every form. Select the payment gateway or gateways donors should see.
- Choose a currency supported by the enabled gateways. Check both the form’s selected currency and any currency-switcher settings. GiveWP documents an error, “No Payment Gateways Available in Your Selected Currency,” that can occur when the form currency is unsupported by the enabled gateways.
- Enable relevant payment methods. GiveWP says Stripe methods enabled in the Stripe account can be used, including Apple Pay, Google Pay and ACH. Whether a method appears depends on the account, country and transaction; do not promise it to every donor.
Understand currency display and settlement
A form’s currency setting, the currency a donor pays in and the currency deposited to your account are related but not always identical. A processor may restrict the currencies your account can accept or settle in, and currency conversion can affect the amount received. Confirm these details for your account before publishing the form, and state the donation currency clearly on the page.
If you use a currency switcher, verify that each selectable currency has at least one enabled gateway that supports it. Test every currency and gateway combination you intend to offer; a form that works in one currency may show no available payment method in another.

Test the whole donation journey before launch
Use the plugin’s Test Mode before switching to live payments. GiveWP’s Stripe setup guide directs administrators to test before accepting live donations and to switch to Live Mode only after verification.
- Submit a successful test donation and confirm that the donation appears in WordPress and the processor account.
- Test a declined or otherwise unsuccessful payment and confirm the donor receives a clear message without a false success confirmation.
- Check webhook behavior and the donation status recorded by the site.
- Confirm that donor receipts show the correct organization, purpose, amount and currency.
- Test refunds and recurring donations if you plan to offer them.
- Test each form currency and each gateway combination you plan to publish.
Before going live, make sure the site uses HTTPS with a valid SSL certificate. GiveWP notes that Stripe fields will not display on a live form without SSL. After testing, switch the gateway from Test Mode to Live Mode and make a final check that the form and payment fields render correctly for donors.

Make the donation page clear about who receives the money and what it will fund. Include the legal entity name, charitable purpose, donation currency, a contact and refund policy, and a privacy notice. Explain whether donations are tax-deductible only where you can substantiate that claim for the donor’s jurisdiction; do not imply that a gift qualifies for a tax deduction everywhere.
