How to Accept Buy Now, Pay Later Payments in WordPress

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical way to accept buy now, pay later (BNPL) in WordPress is to run your checkout through WooCommerce, connect either WooPayments or the official Stripe extension, and enable the BNPL methods available for your merchant country, customer country, currency and cart total. WooPayments and Stripe document support for Affirm, Afterpay and Klarna; a separate Affirm extension is available when you only need Affirm.

What you need before enabling BNPL

  • A WordPress site with WooCommerce installed and a working checkout.
  • A merchant account with WooPayments or Stripe, unless you use Affirm’s provider-specific integration.
  • A supported merchant country, customer billing country, currency and order value. Eligibility is checked by the provider, not just by the plugin.
  • Production approval and fraud checks. Test mode can confirm the checkout flow, but it does not guarantee production eligibility.

BNPL methods may not appear when the customer’s billing country does not match the WooPayments account country, when the payment uses a different currency, or when the cart is outside the provider’s limits. Subscription support also varies; verify the method-specific documentation before offering BNPL for recurring products.

Option 1: Enable BNPL through WooPayments

  1. In WordPress, open WooCommerce > Settings > Payments.
  2. Open the Buy now, pay later section.
  3. Enable the offered methods—Affirm, Afterpay and/or Klarna—and save the settings.
  4. Run a test checkout, then confirm the methods again in live mode after account approval.

WooPayments’ published country matrix is provider-specific. For example, the United States lists Affirm, Afterpay and Klarna; Canada lists Affirm and Afterpay; Australia and New Zealand list Afterpay; the United Kingdom lists Afterpay and Klarna; and many European countries list Klarna. The matrix can change, so use the account-country settings shown in your current WooPayments dashboard.

If a matching standalone BNPL extension is already installed, disable it before enabling the WooPayments method. Running both integrations can create duplicate payment options or conflicting webhooks.

  • Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.

Option 2: Use the official Stripe extension

  1. Install the official Stripe extension for WooCommerce from the WordPress plugin system.
  2. Connect the extension to your Stripe account.
  3. Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > Stripe > Payment Methods.
  4. Turn on the BNPL methods Stripe offers for your account and save.

The official Stripe extension supports Affirm, Afterpay and Klarna alongside cards, wallets and local payment methods. Stripe determines whether a method is available for a particular transaction, so a method enabled in settings can still be hidden at checkout when the customer, currency or amount is ineligible.

Option 3: Install Affirm’s WooCommerce extension

  1. Complete merchant onboarding with Affirm.
  2. Install Affirm’s official WooCommerce extension through WordPress.
  3. Enter the API credentials supplied during onboarding.
  4. Open WooCommerce > Settings > Payments and activate Affirm.
  5. Test authorization and capture before switching the store to live payments.

This route is appropriate when Affirm is your required provider and you want its provider-specific checkout and messaging controls. Do not enable an overlapping Affirm method through WooPayments or Stripe unless you deliberately want two separate integrations and have verified that they cannot duplicate the same payment option.

What customers see at checkout

  1. The customer selects Affirm, Afterpay or Klarna.
  2. The provider opens its account or authorization flow, either in a handoff or an embedded experience.
  3. The customer signs in or creates an account, reviews the plans offered for that purchase and accepts the provider’s terms.
  4. The provider authorizes the transaction and returns the customer to the store.
  5. WooCommerce captures the authorized order according to the gateway’s workflow.

Plans are not fixed store settings: location, currency, order amount and the provider’s approval decision affect what the customer is offered. Apple Pay and Google Pay can also show their own pay-later offers inside their wallet interfaces; WooPayments cannot selectively remove those offers without disabling the wallet method itself.

Does the merchant get paid upfront?

For an approved and completed BNPL transaction, the provider pays the merchant rather than waiting for the customer’s installments. WooPayments states that the merchant receives the full purchase amount when the transaction completes, while the customer repays the BNPL provider over time. Affirm likewise states that it pays the merchant directly and assumes consumer repayment and fraud risk after capture. Your settlement timing, fees, refunds and chargeback handling remain subject to the gateway and provider agreement.

Published transaction limits to check

These examples come from WooPayments’ documentation and can change. They are integration limits, not a promise that every customer will be approved.

Provider and market Documented BNPL amount range Important qualification
Affirm, United States and Canada $35 minimum to $30,000 maximum WooPayments documentation; eligibility and approval still apply.
Afterpay, United States $1 minimum to $4,000 maximum WooPayments documentation; the available limit can depend on the transaction.
Klarna, United States Up to $10,000 for BNPL WooPayments documentation; the provider decides which plans appear.

WooPayments or Stripe: which route fits?

Decision point WooPayments Official Stripe extension
Best starting point Stores already using or planning to use WooPayments. Stores with an existing Stripe account or a broader Stripe payment setup.
BNPL providers Affirm, Afterpay and Klarna where the account-country matrix offers them. Affirm, Afterpay and Klarna where Stripe enables them for the account and transaction.
Country and currency coverage Controlled by WooPayments’ provider- and country-specific rules. Controlled by Stripe’s eligibility rules for the connected account and payment.
Subscriptions Method-specific; some BNPL methods do not support subscriptions. Method-specific; verify support before offering recurring billing.
Duplicate-integration risk Disable a matching standalone extension before enabling the WooPayments method. Avoid enabling a second extension for the same provider unless the integrations are intentionally separate.

Common problems and fixes

The BNPL option is missing

  • Confirm that the customer’s billing country and currency match the account’s supported country and currency.
  • Check that the cart total is within the provider’s documented range.
  • Confirm the merchant account is approved for live BNPL payments.
  • Check whether the product is a subscription or another unsupported product type.

Two identical BNPL options appear

Look for a standalone provider extension as well as the WooPayments or Stripe version. Keep one integration for that provider and remove or deactivate the duplicate, then clear cached checkout settings and retest.

Testing works but live checkout does not

Test mode verifies the technical flow only. Live transactions can be rejected by country rules, amount limits, identity or fraud checks, or pending provider approval.

The order is authorized but not settled

Review the gateway’s capture setting, the order’s payment status and the provider dashboard. Do not manually mark the order paid until the gateway reports a successful capture.
