A news site that meters free article views needs a different system from a membership community or a WooCommerce store that unlocks content after a purchase. Start by choosing the access model, then verify billing, visibility, caching, and compatibility requirements before committing.
Choose the paywall model first
“Paywall plugin” is used for several different products. WordPress directory listings include publisher subscription engines, pledge tools, flexible paywalls, and general membership plugins. They should not be ranked as interchangeable options.

Metered publication access
Readers can view a limited number of free articles before being asked to subscribe. This suits newspapers, magazines, research sites, and niche publications that need search-friendly previews and a recurring subscription.
Hard member-only access
Visitors see a teaser or a login prompt, while members receive the full post, page, course, or other protected content. This is the usual membership-plugin model.

Commerce-linked access
A product purchase grants access to posts, pages, products, or custom post types. This is most useful when the site already runs WooCommerce and content access is part of the store’s customer lifecycle.
Best options by use case
| Plugin or service | Best fit | Documented capabilities | Verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paid Memberships Pro | Free-core membership system with a route to paid add-ons and support | Membership levels, content restriction, recurring payments, trials, payment gateways, metered non-member page views, integrations, and an open-source core | Required add-ons, support scope, gateway availability in your country, and the exact plan contents at checkout |
| WooCommerce Memberships | Existing WooCommerce stores that connect purchases with content access | Rules for posts, pages, custom post types, and products; scheduled access; store-connected memberships | Total WooCommerce stack cost, subscription behavior, extension compatibility, and whether visibility settings meet your confidentiality needs |
| MemberPress | Membership sites needing a documented metered free-view feature | A PayWall option that limits how many times guests can view protected posts or pages, plus SEO controls | Current plan entitlement, search-engine access, cache/CDN exclusions, and interactions with your theme and other plugins |
| Paid Member Subscriptions | A free-starting membership alternative | Recurring payments, membership plans, content restriction, and WooCommerce integration are described in its WordPress.org listing | Free-versus-Pro boundaries, gateway support, metering, and publisher-specific requirements |
| Leaky Paywall, Steady, and similar directory listings | Publisher subscriptions, pledges, or flexible paywall projects | The WordPress.org paywall category describes Leaky Paywall as a subscription engine for news and niche publishers, and Steady as supporting subscriptions, pledges, and a flexible paywall | Current status, pricing, integrations, data portability, payment methods, and regional availability |
Paid Memberships Pro: strongest free-core starting point
Paid Memberships Pro (PMPro) documents an open-source free core with membership levels, restricted content, recurring billing, trials, payment gateways, integrations, and limits on non-member page views. That combination makes it a practical starting point when you want a WordPress membership plugin without paying for the core software immediately.
Current vendor pricing snapshot
On September 30, 2026, PMPro’s official pricing page listed these plans:
| Plan | Listed price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Free core; confirm which add-ons and support are included for your project |
| Standard | $49/month or $499/year | Vendor-bundled premium add-ons and support; verify checkout inclusions |
| Max | $99/month or $999/year | Includes managed hosting according to the vendor’s plan description |
| Max 2x | $299/month or $2,999/year | Includes managed hosting according to the vendor’s plan description |
These are point-in-time vendor prices, not permanent offers. Recheck the live pricing page, renewal terms, gateway availability, and the add-ons your site actually needs. The free core does not mean every premium function is free.

WooCommerce Memberships: best when the store already exists
WooCommerce Memberships applies access rules to posts, pages, custom post types, and products, and it supports scheduled access. It is a logical choice when memberships are another type of WooCommerce customer entitlement rather than a separate publishing system.
Recurring billing requirement
Recurring memberships require WooCommerce Subscriptions alongside WooCommerce Memberships. Calculate the cost and maintenance of that complete stack, not Memberships in isolation.
Visibility versus confidentiality
WooCommerce documents a “Hide content only” mode in which restricted content can remain discoverable in archives and search results. It explains that this can help non-members find content they may pay to access, but that, with effort, restricted text may technically be extracted. If confidential content must be inaccessible, use the complete-hiding behavior recommended in its documentation and test the result yourself.
MemberPress: documented metered PayWall
MemberPress documents an Enable PayWall option that lets users see pages or posts protected by MemberPress rules a limited number of times. This directly addresses the metered-publication use case: allow several free views, then require registration or payment.
Plan the cache configuration
MemberPress warns that caching can interfere with its paywall. Test anonymous and logged-in requests, page-cache behavior, CDN rules, and cache exclusions on the production-like environment before launch. A paywall that works while logged in can still fail for ordinary visitors if a cache serves the wrong version.
Check search-engine policy
Decide whether search engines should see a headline and excerpt, a measured preview, or no protected content. “Discoverable” and “accessible” are different outcomes; a search result does not prove that the full article is securely unavailable.
Paid Member Subscriptions and publisher-focused alternatives
Paid Member Subscriptions
The WordPress.org listing describes recurring payments, membership plans, content restriction, and WooCommerce integration. It is worth evaluating when you want a free-starting membership plugin, but the listing alone does not establish comparative quality, conversion performance, or feature parity with paid products. Confirm the current free and Pro boundaries and whether it supports your metering and gateway requirements.
Leaky Paywall and Steady
Directory descriptions position Leaky Paywall toward news and niche-publisher subscriptions, while Steady is described as supporting subscriptions, pledges, and a flexible paywall. Treat directory presence as candidate discovery, not a reliability ranking. Check product status, pricing, integrations, exports, payment methods, and your publication’s territory before selecting one.

Comparison checklist before you install
Access rules
- Can you protect a whole post, a partial section, a page, a custom post type, a product, or a scheduled release?
- Can different membership levels receive different content?
- Can guests receive a defined free-view allowance?
Payment lifecycle
- Does the system support one-time payments, recurring renewals, trials, coupons, refunds, and cancellations?
- What happens after a failed payment, and can you configure retries or a grace period?
- Is the required gateway available for your country, currency, tax setup, and customer payment methods?
Visibility and SEO
- Do archives, excerpts, feeds, and search results reveal a teaser?
- Can you choose between a discoverable preview and complete hiding?
- Could page caching or an external CDN expose the wrong content state?
Operations
- Does the plugin work with your theme, editor, analytics, email system, and existing commerce extensions?
- How will you migrate members, renewals, protected content, and cancellation data if you change systems?
- Who handles updates and troubleshooting: your team, the vendor, or a managed host?
Implementation and testing sequence
- Map the offer. Define the publication, membership benefits, or product entitlement; list each tier, price, trial, renewal interval, and cancellation rule.
- Choose the access behavior. Decide whether visitors get a metered allowance, a fixed teaser, or no content before login or payment.
- Confirm the payment path. Check gateway, currency, tax, renewal, failed-payment, refund, and email requirements against the plugin’s current documentation.
- Configure visibility. Test archives, internal search, feeds, social previews, XML sitemaps, excerpts, and direct URLs for logged-out visitors.
- Exclude dynamic paywall responses from inappropriate caches. Test anonymous, newly subscribed, expired, and cancelled accounts through every page-cache and CDN layer.
- Run failure tests. Simulate a declined renewal, an expired membership, a refund, a cancelled subscription, and an account with multiple tiers. Confirm that access changes and customer emails occur as intended.
- Document recovery. Keep export procedures, administrator contacts, gateway credentials, and a rollback plan before opening sales.
How to choose
Choose Paid Memberships Pro when
You want an open-source free core, conventional membership levels, recurring billing and trials, and a path to bundled premium add-ons or support.
Choose WooCommerce Memberships when
Your store already uses WooCommerce and content access should follow products, orders, or scheduled store entitlements. Budget for WooCommerce Subscriptions when memberships recur.
Choose MemberPress when
A documented metered free-view paywall is central to the project and you are prepared to validate cache and SEO behavior in your own stack.
Evaluate the directory alternatives when
Your publication needs publisher-oriented subscriptions, pledges, or flexible paywall behavior that general membership plugins may not model cleanly. Verify current product details directly before launch.
What the evidence does not establish
Current vendor documentation and directory listings do not show which plugin produces the highest conversion rate, handles every gateway most reliably, or performs best under identical traffic and caching conditions. Installation counts are changing directory snapshots, not independent market research. Select on documented fit, then test the complete payment and access journey on your own site.
