How Third-Party Games Get Ported to Nintendo Switch

A Nintendo Switch port takes more than exporting a build. Studios get authorized access, adapt and profile the game for the target, prepare content, and complete Nintendo’s release process.

Third-party games reach Nintendo Switch through a combination of authorized platform access, game-specific engineering, performance tuning, content preparation, and Nintendo’s release process. A studio does not simply export a PC or other console build: it adapts the existing project to Switch, tests and profiles it on the target, and makes tradeoffs that fit the game. The details depend on the original game, its engine, and the publisher’s goals; Bulkhead Interactive’s port of The Turing Test is one Unreal Engine example, not a universal formula.

What a Switch port involves

A port is an adaptation of an existing game for a different hardware and software platform. The original game may already run on a PC or another console, but that does not guarantee it will run acceptably on Switch. The team must work with Nintendo’s authorized development resources, adjust the project where necessary, and validate how the result behaves on the target platform.

That work can touch multiple layers of the game: engine version, rendering, code, assets, input, memory use, loading behavior, and platform-specific features. It also extends beyond engineering. A release must pass through content preparation, age-rating and review steps, and preparation of the game’s eShop and online listing. After release, the publisher may need to deliver updates or downloadable content.

There is no single set of changes that defines every port. The best solution for one project depends on its existing technology, the problems found during testing, and the performance and visual-quality tradeoffs its team is willing and able to make.

How studios get access to Switch development resources

Nintendo’s public developer process starts with account registration. Developers accept the Nintendo Developer Portal’s non-disclosure agreement and terms to gain access to development resources and support. Switch information requires a separate application. Nintendo says individuals can register as well as companies, so access is not limited to large studios.

The important distinction is between signing up for a developer account and obtaining access to Switch-specific materials. Access to the platform’s authorized resources is a prerequisite for working through the console development process; public information alone does not provide the complete toolset or technical guidance that a studio needs.

Engine makers may apply their own access controls as well. Epic says developers need approved Nintendo Switch developer status and the necessary permissions to access its Switch-specific Unreal Engine documentation, which is available through a private Switch Development forum. As a result, public Unreal tutorials can explain general engine concepts, but they cannot document the full authorized console workflow.

How a team assesses the game before changing it

Once it has the required access, the team examines the existing project to understand what must be adapted. The relevant questions are practical: Which engine version is the game built on? How does it render its scenes? Which code and assets are demanding? How does it handle input, memory, and loading? Does the game rely on behavior that needs platform-specific adjustment?

This assessment helps distinguish compatibility work from performance work. A project might need changes because its existing engine setup or rendering does not produce the intended result on Switch; it might also run but perform unevenly under particular conditions. Those are different problems and can require different fixes. Teams need to observe the game on the target rather than assume the source-platform behavior will carry over unchanged.

Engine migration can be part of the process. In Bulkhead Interactive’s port of The Turing Test, moving to a newer Unreal Engine version was mostly straightforward at the code level, but rendering changes altered the game’s look. The team then worked on color grading, specularity, and reflections to bring the presentation closer to what it wanted. That example shows why a project can remain recognizable as the same game while still needing substantial visual adjustment.

How profiling reveals the real performance problems

Profiling means measuring how a game uses its available resources and identifying where work is causing slowdowns or other undesirable behavior. It is more useful than applying a generic list of “Switch optimizations,” because a bottleneck in one game may not exist in another. A change that helps one title could be irrelevant—or have unwanted effects—in a different project.

In its account of The Turing Test’s Switch port, Bulkhead reported game-thread spikes associated with streaming and garbage collection. The team tuned streaming and reduced unnecessary work in the project, including expensive Blueprint operations and actor ticks that were not needed. It also replaced some skeletal meshes with static meshes and removed collisions that the game did not need.

  • [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

These changes illustrate how a team can respond to observed costs in the particular game:

  • Investigate spikes rather than guessing. A frame-time problem can have different causes; Bulkhead’s account specifically identified streaming and garbage collection as sources of game-thread spikes in its project.
  • Reduce work that does not serve gameplay. The team cut expensive Blueprint operations and unnecessary actor ticks, and removed unneeded collisions.
  • Match asset complexity to use. Some skeletal meshes became static meshes. That was a project-specific adjustment, not a rule that all animated models should be replaced.
  • Recheck visual effects and materials. Bulkhead adjusted effects and materials after profiling, balancing their cost against the game’s intended appearance.

The aim is not to make every system as simple as possible. A port still needs to preserve the game’s identity and playability. Profiling gives developers evidence about where a change could matter, while testing helps reveal whether the change creates a new problem.

How teams choose performance and visual tradeoffs

Performance targets are decisions for an individual project, not a platform-wide prescription. A team considers what rate it can maintain across the game’s scenes, how demanding effects behave, and what visual changes the game can tolerate. A steady, appropriate target may be a better fit for a particular title than chasing a higher rate that the project cannot sustain consistently.

Bulkhead said it targeted 45 frames per second for The Turing Test because it could maintain that rate across its scenes. The team also tuned demanding effects such as ambient occlusion and screen-space reflections. That figure describes Bulkhead’s target for its own port; it is not an industry benchmark or a required frame rate for Switch games.

Performance decisions can affect several aspects of the experience at once. Reducing an expensive effect may improve performance but change the image. Altering assets or loading behavior may reduce work in one part of the game but require further validation elsewhere. The team must decide which visual qualities are essential, which systems are consuming too much of the available budget, and whether the revised experience remains coherent.

These choices are why “porting” is not synonymous with lowering graphics settings. It can involve preserving a visual style through different rendering choices, revising assets, tuning effects, and making decisions about loading and performance together. The right balance is tied to the actual game and its measured behavior on the target.

What must be prepared before release

Engineering is only one part of getting a port to players. Nintendo’s public release process includes preparing a publishing agreement and an age rating, submitting the game for Nintendo review, and providing promotional materials for eShop and online listings. The specific technical certification checklist is not fully laid out on Nintendo’s public process page, so it should not be treated as a complete guide to every submission requirement.

Localization and other content work can also be part of a project’s release preparation. For The Turing Test, Bulkhead said EFIGS localization was a certification requirement for that project. The team dynamically generated localized text textures during loading or when players changed language. This is evidence about Bulkhead’s game and certification experience, not a universal localization rule that can be applied to every Switch release.

Promotional assets and store information matter for a different reason from technical adaptation: they prepare the game’s public presentation and listing. Nintendo’s outline places those tasks alongside review and rating, showing that release readiness includes both the game build and the material needed to publish it.

How a Switch game reaches the eShop and gets supported

Nintendo says that a completed game may be self-published on the eShop. The publisher chooses the price and release date. A studio can therefore be responsible for more than delivering a working port: it may also need to make publication decisions and prepare the game’s listing and promotional material.

The work does not necessarily stop on launch day. Nintendo provides tools for updates, downloadable content, and price promotions. The exact support plan belongs to the publisher and game; the public process establishes the availability of those tools, not a particular schedule or obligation to use each one.

Why no typical porting budget or schedule can be given

The available evidence does not establish a generalizable typical schedule, cost, team size, or success rate for Switch ports. Those figures would depend on project-specific factors such as the original game, its engine and version, the work uncovered during profiling, content and localization needs, and the release plan. No single case study can supply a reliable industry average.

Similarly, the The Turing Test account is a useful example of one Unreal Engine project, published by Epic on April 10, 2020. It describes real decisions made by Bulkhead, but it does not prove that every port will encounter the same problems or benefit from the same fixes. A different engine, game design, or performance profile may produce a different set of tasks.

A practical way to understand the porting process

For a reader asking what it takes to port a PC game to Switch, the most accurate answer is that the work starts with access and assessment, then follows evidence from the specific project. A team needs authorized platform resources, a clear view of the source game’s technical and content needs, and time to profile and validate an adapted build.

  1. Secure access. Register through Nintendo’s developer process, accept the portal terms and NDA, and apply separately for Switch information. Obtain any required engine-specific permissions as well.
  2. Evaluate the existing project. Review engine version, code, rendering, assets, input, memory use, loading, and platform behavior to identify likely adaptation areas.
  3. Build and test on the target. Use authorized resources to bring the project to Switch and observe its behavior rather than infer performance from another platform.
  4. Profile before optimizing. Identify actual spikes or costly systems, then test targeted changes to code, assets, effects, materials, streaming, or other areas as appropriate to the game.
  5. Set project-specific tradeoffs. Choose a feasible performance goal and decide how to balance it against visual fidelity and loading behavior across the game, not just in a single scene.
  6. Prepare content and submission. Address the project’s content and localization needs, age rating, Nintendo review submission, publishing agreement, and store promotional materials.
  7. Plan publication and support. Set the publisher’s release and pricing decisions, then determine how updates or downloadable content will be handled after launch.

This sequence is a way to understand the major stages, not a substitute for Nintendo’s restricted developer documentation or a complete certification checklist. It explains why third-party ports are collaborative platform releases as much as technical conversions—and why the effort for any one game is determined by what that game actually needs.
