How Thermoelectric Generators Convert Waste Heat Into Electricity

Thermoelectric generators use the Seebeck effect to turn a temperature difference into electricity. Their output depends on materials, operating temperatures and heat flow.

A thermoelectric generator (TEG) converts a temperature difference into electrical voltage through the Seebeck effect. Heat flows from a hot side toward a cooler side; thermoelectric materials placed across that gradient generate electricity. The device does not turn all the heat into power, and it stops producing the Seebeck voltage if its hot and cold sides reach the same temperature.

How the Seebeck effect produces electricity

When two dissimilar conducting materials form a circuit and their junctions are held at different temperatures, a voltage appears. That phenomenon is called the Seebeck effect. In a generator, many thermoelectric couples can be connected in series so their voltages add and provide useful electrical output.

The practical setup needs both a heat source and a cooler side. Heat reaches one face of the device while a sink—such as the surrounding environment or a cooling system—keeps the other face cooler. The temperature difference across the elements drives the voltage. NASA’s 2024 Seebeck-effect explainer describes the effect as electricity produced when one end is heated and the other remains cold. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that output depends on the temperature at each junction and on the thermoelectric materials’ properties in its 2008 overview.

Why a temperature gradient matters

The generator needs heat to keep moving from the hot side toward the cold side. If both sides settle at the same temperature, the gradient disappears and so does the voltage-producing condition. A hotter source can increase the potential output, but the result also depends on the cold-side temperature, heat transfer, electrical load and losses in the system.

What determines a TEG’s performance?

Thermoelectric materials need to conduct electricity well while limiting heat conduction through the device. If heat leaks quickly from hot to cold without contributing to useful electrical output, it weakens the gradient the generator relies on.

Researchers describe a material’s potential using the dimensionless figure of merit ZT = σS²T/λ, where σ is electrical conductivity, S is the Seebeck coefficient, T is absolute temperature and λ is thermal conductivity. A higher ZT can support better conversion, but it is not a stand-alone rating for a complete generator. Actual device performance also depends on the hot- and cold-side temperatures, thermal and electrical contacts, heat leakage, and the module’s design.

How efficient are thermoelectric generators?

There is no single efficiency figure that applies to every TEG. Published NASA figures illustrate why the device type, materials, operating temperatures and system boundary must accompany any number.

Figure What it describes
Approximately 3% to 6% NASA’s 2017 Next-Generation RTG Study Final Report gives this system-level conversion range for legacy thermoelectric materials in legacy radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG) designs; the value varies with hot- and cold-side temperatures.
Approximately 6.3% at beginning of life NASA’s 2018 advanced thermoelectric technology page reports this thermal-to-electric efficiency for the then-current flight-proven Multi-Mission RTG (MMRTG). It is a dated, system-specific figure, not a universal TEG benchmark.
12% to 17% in a modeled example NASA’s 2017 report illustrates a simplified device with material ZT of 1: at hot- and cold-side temperatures of 500 K and 300 K, respectively, raising the hot side to 1,000 K increases calculated efficiency from 12% to 17%. The report also calculates 17% at the original temperatures if ZT rises from 1 to 2. These are modeled examples, not commercial product ratings.

These figures concern RTGs or a simplified modeled device, not all thermoelectric generators or industrial installations. The cited sources do not establish a universal field-performance figure for waste-heat recovery.

Thermoelectric Generator Demonstration Kit – Peltier Module Seebeck Effect Physics Lab Apparatus with Fan, 4mm Terminals & Dual Water Cups for STEM Energy Conversion Experiments
  • Demonstrates the Seebeck Effect (Thermoelectric Effect): Shows how heat energy is directly converted into electricity using a thermocouple and aluminum conductors. Students observe voltage generation created by a temperature gradient.
  • Clear Hot vs. Cold Water Demonstration: Designed to be immersed in 2–3" of water with each aluminum leg placed in separate cups (2 clear cups included). Equal temperatures produce no output — a strong temperature difference causes the fan to spin.
  • Built-In Data Monitoring Capability: Features 4mm input/output terminals and a switch to redirect electricity to a meter for measurement. Allows students to monitor voltage output and analyze temperature differential vs. EMF production.
  • Real-World Energy Application Example: Illustrates the same thermoelectric principles used in deep space probes such as NASA Voyager missions. Silent operation with no moving engine parts — an excellent example of applied renewable energy technology.
  • Complete Classroom Teaching Kit: Includes thermoelectric generator assembly, fan, two clear immersion cups, and detailed instructions with sample student questions. Ideal for physics labs covering energy conversion, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and alternative energy.

How NASA uses thermoelectric generators in space

NASA uses RTGs to power certain spacecraft. In an RTG, heat from radioactive decay supplies the hot side, while the surrounding environment provides a colder side. Thermocouples convert part of the resulting heat flow into electricity. NASA’s radioisotope power systems overview explains this application. Excess heat from an MMRTG can also help keep a spacecraft and its instruments warm.

The Department of Energy’s 2008 article described the MMRTG’s plutonium dioxide heat source as initially providing approximately 2,000 watts thermal and 120 watts electrical. Those are article-era figures for that system, not general specifications for a thermoelectric module.

Could TEGs recover industrial waste heat?

Thermoelectric materials are also of interest for recovering some industrial waste heat and improving energy efficiency. NASA’s 2018 technology article identifies this as a potential application area. That does not establish that a particular factory installation will be economical or that a small consumer module is suitable for industrial use.

A real project would need to assess the heat source and sink temperatures, available heat flow, electrical load, integration and cooling requirements, expected service life, and total cost. The cited sources do not provide a like-for-like cost or return-on-investment comparison against other industrial recovery methods.

What are the advantages and limitations?

Advantages

  • No moving parts: A thermoelectric device can avoid the mechanical moving parts found in some power systems, a useful design feature where maintenance access is difficult. NASA highlights this advantage in its RTG overview.
  • Direct conversion: The device converts a temperature difference into electricity in a solid-state arrangement, rather than relying on a mechanical generator.

Limitations

  • It needs a maintained gradient: The hot and cold sides must stay at different temperatures, which requires suitable heat transfer and cooling.
  • Only part of the heat becomes electricity: Efficiency depends on the materials, operating temperatures and system design; the cited RTG figures are modest and cannot be generalized to every installation.
  • Integration matters: Contacts, heat leakage, the electrical load and physical arrangement affect real output, so a material’s ZT alone cannot predict system performance.

What to evaluate when considering a TEG

For a specific waste-heat project, compare options at the actual operating point rather than relying on a generic module claim. Useful evaluation criteria include:

  • Hot-side and cold-side temperature ranges, including how they vary over time.
  • Available heat flow and expected electrical output and conversion efficiency at those conditions.
  • Cooling needs, physical integration and thermal or electrical contact design.
  • Moving parts, maintenance requirements, temperature cycling and expected service life.
  • Total system cost and the value of the electricity recovered.

These criteria help frame an engineering assessment; the NASA and DOE sources cited here do not provide comparative results or costs for competing industrial technologies.
