LiveHaptics is a community-made project that captures a Windows or Linux PC’s audio, processes it, and streams an audio-derived signal to a Steam Controller’s haptic actuators. It is designed to let you feel audio from music, games, and video; the project’s format and compatibility details are developer-published claims, not independent test results.
What LiveHaptics does
LiveHaptics takes system audio and converts it into haptic PCM for the Steam Controller. The project says its processing applies gain, a bass shelf, and a soft-knee limiter before sending the signal to the controller. That makes it an audio-to-haptics tool rather than a feature built into every game: the input is PC audio, and the controller’s actuators provide the output. The project README names music, movies, and games as use cases.

The repository documents Windows and Linux builds, including Linux/SteamOS instructions. The Steam Controller is the required physical device; USB, a Steam Puck wireless dongle, and Bluetooth are the documented connection options.
Connection type changes the documented audio format
The project lists different formats by connection. These are specifications from the developer, not independently measured quality or latency benchmarks.
#1 Best Overall
- TMR Joysticks - Offering higher sensitivity, greater precision, and enhanced durability.
- 8BitDo Exclusive Wireless Technology - “8Speed”, it delivers an exceptionally stable 2.4G connection with ultra-low latency under 1ms. Engineered for rock-solid reliability, it features strong anti-interference and a 10m range with virtually no lag.
- Trigger Mode Switch - Easily switch between linear Hall Effect triggers and non-linear tactile triggers for optimal control across different gaming scenarios.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection). Customizable 6-Axis Motion Control. Turbo function. Rumble vibration. Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2.
- 2 Pro back paddle buttons, extra R4/L4 bumpers, and tactile bumpers & D-pad for enhanced control and faster response. Includes a multifunctional charging dock and USB-C adapter for seamless connectivity.
| Connection | Project-listed format | Documented caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Wired USB | 16-bit, 8 kHz stereo | The project calls USB its best-quality path; excessive gain can distort. |
| Steam Puck | 8 kHz mu-law stereo, with a selectable 4 kHz clean mode | Release notes report occasional packet-loss pops. |
| Bluetooth on Windows | 4 kHz mu-law | The project notes a limited treble ceiling and lower output than wired. |
| Bluetooth on Linux | 1 kHz mu-law smooth mode | Higher modes may lag on some BlueZ stacks; the project documentation treats Bluetooth on Linux as experimental. |
The figures describe the signal formats the software offers, not a guarantee that every connection, controller, or PC will perform identically. The repository and release notes are the sources for the listed modes and caveats.
What to know before setting it up
The release page lists LiveHaptics v1.2 and a v1.2 pre-release, with downloadable Windows and Linux builds. Release status and compatibility can change, so check the latest instructions and release notes before installing.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
- Connect the Steam Controller using the connection type you intend to use.
- If Steam Input is holding the controller’s HID device, close Steam before starting LiveHaptics.
- Start the GUI and select the correct device if the Puck is detected but the controller remains silent.
The project warns that its Windows executable is unsigned and may trigger Microsoft SmartScreen. It also notes that a future Valve firmware update could alter the protocol. Consult the release notes for current installation guidance and known issues.

Haptics may add another way to experience audio, but they are not an accessibility replacement
Club386 describes the project as a potential aid for gamers who are deaf or have partial hearing, including a community member’s account of how haptics might enhance an experience. That is a possible use case, not evidence from a controlled accessibility evaluation. Club386’s coverage does not establish that the mod can replace captions, visual alerts, or other accessibility features.

- Rechargeable wireless pro controller designed for Steam for Windows 11/10 & Steam Deck
- Dedicated buttons for quick access to Steam menus
- Capacitive Touch Thumbsticks, gyro sensor, programmable buttons, & more
- Also functions as an XInput controller for Windows 11/10 (wired mode only)
- Compatible with Steam and Steam Deck
The reviewed project materials also do not establish exact latency, universal compatibility, a guaranteed immersive effect, or long-term controller wear. Those outcomes may depend on the setup and the person using it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A separate audio-haptics app is also available
Fancy Haptics is a separate app on Steam, released September 4, 2026. Its store listing advertises live audio-to-haptics for Steam Controller, DualSense, Steam Deck, Xbox, and 8BitDo controllers, along with Windows 10/11 and native Linux/SteamOS support. Those are claims on the Steam listing, not comparative test results. Its advertised hardware range is broader, but that alone does not establish that it works or behaves the same way as LiveHaptics on any particular setup.
