How the SSH Encryption and Connection Process Works

SSH encrypts a session in stages: negotiate algorithms, authenticate the server with its host key, derive fresh directional keys, enable packet protection, authenticate the user, and open channels for shells and forwarding.

SSH (Secure Shell) protects a remote session in stages. First, the client and server negotiate compatible algorithms and perform a host-authenticated key exchange. They then derive fresh symmetric keys, turn on encrypted packet protection, authenticate the user inside that protected transport, and finally open channels for a shell, commands, forwarding, or subsystems.

That order answers a common question: your password is not sent before encryption. User authentication happens only after the transport layer has established confidentiality and integrity. The server’s host key and your user’s authentication key serve different purposes, and checking both correctly is essential.

SSH is a protocol suite, not just an encryption algorithm

SSH is designed for secure remote login and other network services across an untrusted network. RFC 4251 divides the protocol into three cooperating layers:

  • Transport layer: identifies and authenticates the server, negotiates cryptographic algorithms, performs key exchange, and protects packets against disclosure and tampering.
  • User-authentication layer: proves which client-side user is requesting access after the transport is already secure.
  • Connection layer: carries shells, remote commands, forwarding, X11 forwarding, and subsystems as separate logical channels inside one encrypted connection.

This separation explains why an SSH connection can be encrypted even when login has not yet succeeded. The server can establish a secure transport, reject the offered user credentials, and still never expose a password or command in plaintext on the network.

The connection sequence from TCP to an interactive shell

Stage What happens Security purpose
1. TCP and identification The client opens a reliable stream and both sides exchange SSH identification strings. Establishes the transport conversation and protocol version context.
2. Algorithm negotiation Each side sends an SSH_MSG_KEXINIT proposal listing supported key exchange, host-key, encryption, integrity/MAC, and compression choices. Creates a mutually acceptable cryptographic profile under local policy.
3. Host-authenticated key exchange The peers create a shared secret K and exchange hash H; the server signs the exchange data with its host key. Establishes shared key material and lets the client authenticate the server.
4. Key derivation Both sides derive directional encryption and integrity keys from K, H, and the session identifier. Produces independent keys for each traffic direction and each session.
5. New keys Both sides send SSH_MSG_NEWKEYS; subsequent packets use the negotiated keys and algorithms. Begins protected packet transport and tamper detection.
6. User authentication The client requests ssh-userauth and offers methods allowed by the server, such as public-key or password authentication. Identifies and authorizes the human or service account.
7. Channel setup The client requests ssh-connection and opens one or more channels. Multiplexes interactive and non-interactive services through the same tunnel.

1. TCP connection and SSH identification

SSH begins with a normal reliable byte stream, usually supplied by TCP. The client connects to the server endpoint and the two implementations exchange identification strings. This exchange tells each side that it is speaking SSH and provides protocol-version context before binary transport packets begin.

At this point, no user password has been submitted and no shell exists. The identification exchange is not the security boundary; it is the prelude to the transport protocol’s negotiation and key exchange.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Algorithm negotiation with SSH_MSG_KEXINIT

Each peer sends an SSH_MSG_KEXINIT message containing ordered lists of algorithms it supports. The lists cover several independent choices:

  • Key exchange: the method used to create shared secret material.
  • Server host-key algorithms: how the server proves possession of its host private key.
  • Encryption algorithms: how packet contents are kept confidential.
  • Integrity or MAC algorithms: how altered packets are detected when the selected mode uses a separate integrity check.
  • Compression: whether payloads are compressed before encryption.

The negotiated result is selected from the intersection of both lists, subject to each side’s preference order and security policy. SSH therefore does not mandate one universal cipher for every installation. A current implementation may support extensions such as AES-CTR, AES-GCM, elliptic-curve key exchange, and SHA-2-based integrity algorithms, while administrators can disable choices they consider unsuitable.

Negotiation is not an invitation to accept the weakest common option blindly. A server or client policy can remove legacy algorithms, and a connection fails rather than silently selecting an algorithm that policy forbids.

3. Host-authenticated key exchange

Key exchange creates a shared secret, conventionally called K, without sending that secret directly across the network. In a typical Diffie–Hellman-style exchange, each side contributes an ephemeral value. The mathematics lets both calculate the same secret while an observer sees only the public exchange values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exchange also produces a hash, conventionally H, over the negotiated context and exchanged data. The server signs that exchange hash with its host private key. The client verifies the signature using the host public key it has received or previously stored. This signature binds the server’s identity to the exact handshake rather than merely proving that an encrypted channel exists.

Why the host key must be checked

Encryption by itself does not prove that you reached the intended machine. A hostile intermediary could attempt to stand between client and server and create separate encrypted sessions. The client should compare the server’s host key or fingerprint with a trusted first-known value, an administrative record, or another out-of-band confirmation. An unexpected change should be investigated instead of automatically accepted; it can indicate legitimate server replacement, a reinstalled system, or an interception attempt.

4. Deriving keys for the session

After key exchange, SSH derives multiple keys from K, H, and the session identifier. The first exchange hash becomes the stable session identifier used by later authentication proofs. Derivation yields separate material for client-to-server and server-to-client traffic, rather than reusing one bidirectional key.

Direction separation limits the effect of an implementation mistake and makes packet processing unambiguous: one set of keys protects data sent by the client, and another protects data sent by the server. The resulting keys are specific to that connection’s exchange, not a permanent replacement for the server’s host key or a user’s private key.

5. SSH_MSG_NEWKEYS turns protection on

Each side sends SSH_MSG_NEWKEYS when it is ready to use the derived keys. Packets sent afterward are encrypted with the negotiated encryption algorithm and checked for integrity using the negotiated mechanism. If an attacker changes ciphertext, packet lengths, sequence context, or protected data in a way the protocol detects, the receiver rejects the packet instead of delivering corrupted content to the application.

Before this transition, the peers are still negotiating the transport. After it, the transport can safely carry the user-authentication exchange. This is why an SSH password is protected even though the user has not logged in yet: the password request is made inside the already-established encrypted transport.

6. User authentication happens inside the encrypted transport

The client requests the ssh-userauth service and offers methods permitted by the server’s configuration. Public-key authentication proves possession of a user’s private key corresponding to a public key authorized for the account. Password authentication sends the password through the protected transport; it does not replace the transport’s encryption or host verification.

Host keys and user keys are different

Key type Whose identity it represents Where it is used
Server host key The SSH server or host During key exchange, when the server signs the exchange hash.
User private/public key pair The client-side user or service account During user authentication, when the client proves possession of the private key.

Confusing these roles causes practical security errors. Installing a user’s public key in an account does not authenticate the server, and accepting a server host key does not grant a user access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Channels carry the actual work

After authentication succeeds, the client requests the ssh-connection service and opens channels. A channel is a logical stream with its own purpose and flow-control state, while the transport remains one encrypted connection. Typical channel uses include:

  • an interactive shell;
  • a single remote command;
  • local, remote, or dynamic port forwarding;
  • X11 forwarding; and
  • subsystems such as file-transfer or administrative services.

Multiple channels can coexist and share the same transport. RFC 4254 describes this as multiplexing channels into a single encrypted tunnel. Closing one command channel does not necessarily terminate other channels or the underlying connection.

What “SSH encryption” actually means

SSH combines cryptographic roles rather than using one algorithm for everything. Asymmetric techniques authenticate the host and support key agreement. Symmetric session encryption then protects the continuous data stream efficiently once both sides share fresh keys. Integrity protection may be provided by a separate message-authentication code or by an authenticated-encryption mode that combines confidentiality and integrity.

The RFCs define the negotiation framework and key-derivation rules, not one mandatory modern cipher for every deployment. Implementations and administrators decide which algorithms are enabled. Compression is negotiated separately and, when enabled, occurs before encryption; it can reduce bandwidth but may have operational or side-channel considerations, so it should be governed by policy rather than assumed to be beneficial.

Are SSH packets encrypted before you log in?

Yes, after the transport sends SSH_MSG_NEWKEYS. The user-authentication exchange, including a password field when that method is allowed, is carried inside the protected transport. The earlier identification and algorithm-negotiation messages are part of establishing that transport and are not a logged-in session.

This ordering also means failed authentication does not expose a plaintext credential. It does not, however, eliminate the need to verify the host key: a password sent over an encrypted connection to the wrong host is still a security failure.

Fresh keys and long-lived connections

Key exchange creates session-specific key material rather than relying indefinitely on one static encryption key. The transport protocol can perform another key exchange during a long-lived connection, replacing the active session keys while preserving the authenticated transport. Rekeying limits how much traffic is protected by one key set and is an important part of the protocol lifecycle.

The server’s host key remains an identity credential used to authenticate exchanges; it is not the same thing as the frequently replaced symmetric traffic keys. Likewise, a user’s private key remains an authentication credential and is not used to encrypt every byte typed into a shell.

How to reason about a connection that fails

Host-key warning

Stop and verify the change through a trusted administrative channel. Do not treat a new fingerprint as a routine password prompt. Confirm whether the server was rebuilt, replaced, or intentionally rotated before updating the client’s trusted host-key record.

No mutually supported algorithm

The peers’ enabled lists have no acceptable intersection, or local policy rejects the common choices. Align approved algorithm policies deliberately on both sides; do not re-enable obsolete algorithms merely to make a connection succeed.

Authentication rejected

The encrypted transport can be functioning normally while the account, public key, password, or server authorization policy is wrong. Check which user-authentication methods the server permits and whether the account is authorized for the requested service.

Channel or forwarding refused

Successful login does not guarantee every channel type is allowed. Server policy can permit shells while denying forwarding, X11, or particular subsystems. Treat channel authorization as a separate decision from transport encryption and user authentication.

A compact security checklist

  • Verify the server host key or fingerprint against a trusted record.
  • Use an approved algorithm policy instead of accepting every legacy option.
  • Keep server host keys separate from users’ authentication keys.
  • Protect user private keys and authorize only the corresponding public keys needed for each account.
  • Remember that encryption protects traffic confidentiality and integrity; it does not decide whether a user may open a shell, run a command, or create a tunnel.
  • Investigate unexpected host-key changes and unexplained algorithm or channel failures before changing security settings.
