The Pixel 11 Pro’s HiLight is a rear ring of colored LEDs around the camera flash. It gives selected cues when the phone is face down—currently including Gemini activity and calls from favorite contacts—rather than acting as a general lamp for every app notification. That makes it different in placement and purpose from a traditional front-facing notification light, but the available evidence does not support a model-by-model ranking against current phones.
What HiLight is—and where you see it
HiLight is a set of colored LEDs built around the camera flash on the Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL; Google’s support page also lists the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. It is on the back of the phone, not in the front bezel or on the display. Google describes it as a way to get selected glanceable cues without looking at the screen, so its intended use is when the rear of the phone is visible, such as when the phone is face down.

Google’s August 13, 2026 announcement describes HiLight as using color-coded lights to convey certain timely information. That describes the intended benefit; it is not an independent measurement of how noticeable or useful the feature is in everyday use.
What triggers HiLight at launch
Gemini activity
Google documents different light patterns for Gemini activity, including when Gemini is thinking and responding. Its launch description also identifies a cue for when Gemini is listening. The feature therefore communicates activity from the assistant, not just an alert that something needs attention.

Calls from favorite contacts
You can assign a custom HiLight color to each favorite contact. Google says this works for incoming calls through Phone by Google and WhatsApp. The light is tied to calls from favorites, not all calls by default.
Ordinary messages and app alerts
HiLight was not documented as a universal app-notification lamp at launch. In an August 23, 2026 review, Tom’s Guide reviewer Tom Pritchard reported that ordinary text and email notifications did not trigger it at that time. Google’s support page currently lists Gemini and calls from favorites among the HiLight settings. This is a dated observation and feature availability may change with software updates.

Google’s launch announcement said favorite-contact message notifications were among the capabilities users could expect over time, but gave no rollout date. Do not assume that this capability is available now; check current settings and support information.

| Comparison | Pixel HiLight | Traditional front-facing notification light |
|---|---|---|
| Position and visibility | On the rear around the camera flash; intended to be seen with the phone face down. | On the front, so it can be visible when the display side faces the user. Exact placement varies by phone. |
| Documented triggers | Gemini activity and incoming calls from favorite contacts, according to Google’s current documentation. | Can signal missed calls, messages, or app events on some phones; behavior depends on the specific model and software. |
| Customization | Users can assign colors to favorite contacts. | Controls vary by model; app-specific colors or patterns should not be assumed. |
| Primary role | Combines selected alerts with feedback about Gemini activity. | Primarily signals that an event may need attention. |
This comparison is about the general design distinction, not a verified inventory of particular competitors. Without current, model-specific evidence, it would be misleading to call HiLight the first, only, or objectively better camera-area indicator.

Set up HiLight on a supported Pixel
- Open Settings > System > HiLight.
- Turn on Speaking with Gemini, Calls from favorites, or both, depending on which cues you want.
- Make sure the Contacts app is up to date, then add the people you want to use as favorites.
- Open a favorite’s contact in Contacts, select HiLight under Contact Settings, and choose that person’s color.
Google notes that if flash notifications are enabled, HiLight will not display for incoming calls. In modes such as Flip to Shhh, Bedtime, and Do Not Disturb, HiLight glows by default; call behavior can be adjusted in the mode settings.

Since HiLight behavior depends on software, check Google’s current support page before relying on a particular trigger.
