Some pieces of that shift already exist—headsets play immersive video, and creators can broadcast experiences from a headset to familiar platforms—but there is no single metaverse or universal event format. What viewers can actually do depends on the device, app, event design, and network.
What “metaverse live streaming” can mean
The phrase covers several different experiences. A 360-degree video is immersive footage that viewers can look around within; a shared virtual venue is a rendered environment where participants may appear as avatars and interact. Both differ from simply watching an ordinary livestream on a headset display.
| Experience | What the viewer sees and does | Typical production path |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional livestream | A flat video, with interaction usually through chat, reactions, or platform controls. | Camera, encoder, and a streaming platform. |
| 360-degree or immersive video | A recorded or live panoramic scene; viewers choose where to look, often using a headset. | Immersive camera capture and compatible playback. |
| Interactive rendered venue | A computer-generated spatial scene where viewers may share a place, see one another, and take in-world actions. | A real-time application or renderer, with infrastructure for delivering the experience. |
These formats can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. ISO/IEC TR 23090-27:2025 describes render-based streaming workflows in which media resources are delivered to applications such as game engines and renderers. That is a different model from sending every viewer the same finished video. The report describes a workflow, not one settled, interoperable metaverse architecture.
How could the metaverse change the viewer experience?
In a conventional stream, the audience watches from outside the scene. Immersive video can put the viewer inside a spherical recording and let them turn to see different parts of it. A rendered event could go further: people might gather in a virtual venue, move around, react in the environment, and experience spatial audio or coordinated visuals together.

That can change the feeling of watching from a distance into something closer to being present with others—but presence is not guaranteed. Comfort, image quality, network performance, accessible controls, and the event’s design all affect whether the experience works for a particular person. ITU-T’s June 2026 quality framework treats metaverse experience as more than audiovisual quality, including “presence, immersion, interactivity and multi-sensory fidelity.”
Can you watch live streams in VR?
Yes, in some cases. YouTube VR’s support information lists immersive 360-degree and VR content on certain devices, including Meta Quest 3, PICO 4, and Apple Vision Pro. That establishes playback support for listed devices; it does not mean every YouTube livestream is 360-degree, that every event has a VR production, or that every metaverse venue works in YouTube VR. An ordinary livestream may simply appear as a video screen in a headset.

How creators could produce and distribute immersive streams
Creators may capture a headset experience, composite an actor or performer into a mixed-reality scene, or produce an event directly inside a real-time rendered environment. The audience does not necessarily need a headset: a creator can offer a spatial experience to headset viewers while conventional viewers watch a two-dimensional broadcast on a browser or streaming app. The production and viewing versions may differ, so creators should make clear what each audience can see and do.
Broadcasting a headset experience
Meta’s BeamXR Live case study describes broadcasting VR or mixed-reality experiences from Quest to platforms including Twitch and YouTube, with features such as overlays, live chat, and clipping in the headset workflow. Meta’s mixed-reality capture guidance also describes sharing an in-headset experience with people in the same room or through streaming. These examples show a bridge from a headset to established live platforms; they do not establish that every headset title supports capture or that capture has no performance trade-offs.

Building capture into an XR application
For developers, LIV describes in-app camera and streaming tools for Unity and Unreal applications. That illustrates a different route: integrating capture into the XR experience rather than simply broadcasting a headset view. Meta’s guidance points to production considerations such as performance optimization, lighting, actor selection, and storyboarding. A polished mixed-reality scene therefore involves production choices as well as a stream connection.
What equipment might an attendee need?
For a standard livestream, a browser or streaming app on a compatible screen is enough. To look around supported immersive content, a compatible headset may be useful; Meta Quest 3 is one device listed by YouTube VR support. An interactive venue may require the specific headset, app, or account supported by its organizer. Check the event’s access instructions before buying equipment: there is no universal compatibility guarantee, and some events may offer a non-headset way to watch.

Why delivery quality matters more in immersive events
A delay or unstable image can be distracting in any livestream. In a spatial experience, it can also disrupt the viewer’s sense of movement, timing, or shared presence. ITU-T identifies latency, jitter, frame rate, throughput, packet loss, synchronization, and task-oriented measures as relevant quality factors. Accessibility and experience measures matter too; a high-resolution picture alone does not determine whether an event feels usable.
What the published technical thresholds do—and do not—say
ITU-T’s June 2026 report gives illustrative values for immersive social metaverse examples: VR frame rate of at least 90 frames per second and motion-to-photon latency of no more than 20 milliseconds. These are examples gathered from cited literature, not universal requirements for every livestream or guarantees that an experience meeting them will feel good to every viewer. The report’s other cloud-streaming figures draw on named preliminary or submitted studies, so they should not be treated as settled service-wide targets.

ITU’s work programme includes an architectural framework for immersive live experience services, covering topics such as use cases, presentation equipment, cloud computing, accessibility, and quality measurement. This is evidence of active technical work, not evidence that platforms already share one architecture or that interoperability is solved.
How to judge whether an immersive stream will work for you
Before attending or producing an event, check what experience is actually offered rather than relying on the word “metaverse.” These questions help distinguish a headset-friendly video from a genuinely interactive venue:
- Immersion: Is it a flat video, panoramic footage, or a rendered spatial scene?
- Interaction: Can viewers only watch and chat, or can they meet and act in the environment?
- Access: Which headset, app, or browser is supported, and can a non-headset audience participate?
- Delivery: Does the event depend on smooth motion, spatial audio, or synchronized audience actions?
- Accessibility and fallback: Are captions, usable controls, and an alternative viewing option available?
- Production: Is the creator broadcasting a headset view, capturing immersive footage, or running a real-time application?
These are practical checks, not a standardized commercial rating system for event platforms. ITU-T’s quality framework and its work on immersive live experiences identify several of these dimensions, but they do not provide a universal platform comparison.
Is the metaverse already a mass live-streaming audience?
Not on the evidence of standards-community membership. The Metaverse Standards Forum reported more than 2,600 member organizations in 2024; that is the Forum’s organization-membership figure, not a count of consumers, stream viewers, or active metaverse users. A reliable consumer-adoption figure is not established here, so standards activity and technical demonstrations should not be mistaken for proof of mass audience adoption.
