The International Space Station stays livable through a connected set of life-support and crew-care systems, not by relying on a single supply of air or water. Its Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) circulates and cleans cabin air, recovers and treats water, and generates oxygen. Exercise, nutrition, medical support, food planning and international station operations address the demands microgravity places on people. Recycling stretches supplies, but it does not make the station fully self-sufficient.

What makes the ISS a livable habitat?

A spacecraft habitat has to do more than provide a place for people to work. It has to maintain a breathable, appropriately pressurized environment, move air through the cabin, manage water and waste, detect and respond to fire, and support crew health over time. On the ISS, these jobs are coordinated through ECLSS and other station systems. NASA groups ECLSS’s main functions under water recovery, air revitalization and oxygen generation; it also describes functions including ventilation, pressure control, fire detection and suppression, waste management, oxygen levels and water supply in its ECLSS overview.

Microgravity changes how people experience ordinary tasks and affects the body, so habitability also depends on exercise, nutrition, medical support and operational planning. In parallel, life support must cope with finite onboard resources and dependence on a wider international station partnership. These pieces are connected: recovered water can become feedstock for oxygen production, carbon dioxide removed from cabin air can contribute to water production, and the food system has to work within constraints on mass, storage, preparation and crew time.

How the station recovers and treats water

The ISS collects wastewater from several sources: urine, moisture condensed from cabin humidity, and water recovered from spacesuit hydration systems. Recovery does not mean that wastewater is simply filtered once and returned to a tap. It passes through a treatment chain designed to remove impurities and check the result before storage.

From wastewater to stored water

  1. Collect moisture and wastewater. Water Recovery System components gather urine and other wastewater, including cabin humidity condensate and water from spacesuit hydration systems.
  2. Distill urine. The Urine Processor Assembly uses vacuum distillation to separate water from urine. The system also processes remaining urine brine as part of the recovery effort described by NASA.
  3. Filter and treat the water. The Water Processor Assembly uses specialized filtration and catalytic treatment to remove contaminants.
  4. Check the result and reprocess if needed. Sensors monitor purity. Water that does not meet the system’s acceptance checks is sent through treatment again rather than being accepted for storage.
  5. Protect water in storage. NASA says acceptable water is iodinated to prevent microbial growth before it is stored for reuse.

This process makes reclaimed water an input to daily station operations rather than a one-use supply. NASA’s June 20, 2023 account says one crew member needs about one U.S. gallon of water per day for drinking, preparing food and hygiene such as brushing teeth. That is the article’s estimate for those uses; it is not a complete inventory of all station water flows or a statement of a crew member’s full daily schedule.

Why NASA’s water-recovery percentages differ

Two NASA figures describe different scopes or stages and should not be treated as competing measurements of one fixed, universal rate. The figures are also tied to their stated source contexts, not a guarantee of performance under every operating condition.

Figure What it describes How to read it
About 90% The Water Recovery System’s stated ability to recover and recycle station water in NASA’s ECLSS overview, whose linked technical overview PDF is dated April 4, 2025. A system-level performance figure in that overview. It is not the same statement as the later total-recovery milestone.
93–94% Total recovery before the Brine Processor Assembly, as reported by NASA in its June 20, 2023 milestone article. The article’s stated pre-brine-processing level.
98% Total water recovery demonstrated with the Brine Processor Assembly, as reported in that same June 20, 2023 article. A milestone demonstration that included processing the remaining urine brine, not an unqualified claim that the station always recovers 98%.

The distinction matters because “water recovery” can refer to a particular subsystem or to a broader total, and because the 98% account includes processing that raised recovery beyond the earlier level. NASA reported the milestone on June 20, 2023; the page metadata says it was last updated March 2, 2026. ECLSS’s overview states about 90% for the Water Recovery System. Both should be attributed to their specific descriptions rather than blended into a single headline rate. See NASA’s water-recovery milestone account and ECLSS overview.

How the station keeps air breathable and supplies oxygen

Cabin air has to circulate while equipment removes carbon dioxide and trace contaminants. People exhale carbon dioxide, and materials in the cabin can release trace contaminants. The ISS air system addresses both kinds of problem, while a separate assembly generates oxygen from recovered water.

Removing carbon dioxide and trace contaminants

NASA’s ECLSS overview describes activated charcoal, a catalytic oxidizer and a lithium hydroxide bed among the equipment used to remove trace contaminants. Molecular sieves capture carbon dioxide. These functions are important for different reasons: carbon dioxide is a normal product of crew respiration, while trace contaminants can come from materials and human off-gassing. Air revitalization therefore involves more than adding oxygen; it also requires continual treatment of the air already in the cabin.

Making oxygen from water

The Oxygen Generation Assembly electrolyzes water, separating it into oxygen and hydrogen. The oxygen is delivered to the cabin. Hydrogen can either be vented or routed to the carbon-dioxide reduction assembly. That choice links oxygen production to the handling of carbon dioxide rather than treating those processes as wholly separate loops.

Using hydrogen and carbon dioxide to recover water

In the Sabatier reactor, hydrogen reacts with crew-exhaled carbon dioxide to produce water and methane. The water can return to the station’s usable supply; NASA says the methane is released to space. This reaction recovers some water from materials involved in crew respiration and oxygen generation. It does not close every material loop: methane leaves the station, and the existence of recycling does not eliminate the need for resupply.

The equipment works as a chain: air is circulated and cleaned, oxygen is generated from water, and some of the hydrogen can react with removed carbon dioxide to make more water. How the station supports crew health in microgravity

Microgravity changes the distribution of bodily fluids and is associated with changes involving vision, the brain, bones, muscles and cardiovascular function. NASA also identifies concerns involving aerobic capacity and strength. These are not isolated inconveniences: changes in more than one body system can affect health and the ability to perform mission tasks. NASA describes human-health considerations in its Fundamentals of Human Health reference.

Exercise as a planned countermeasure

Exercise is prescribed as a countermeasure to support crew health and performance. It is part of the operational response to living in microgravity, not merely optional recreation. The useful takeaway is the purpose of the program: it addresses physiological changes and helps maintain physical capability during a mission. The reviewed NASA material does not establish a single exercise duration or a universal routine for every astronaut, so a precise daily time commitment should not be inferred from it.

Food that works for people and for the station

Space food has to satisfy several requirements at once. NASA says it must be safe, nutritious and acceptable to crew. Planning also accounts for mass, volume, power, crew time, available preparation capability, preferences, resupply, variety, mission duration and shelf life. Those constraints explain why a food system cannot be judged solely by whether an item is nutritious: it also has to be stored, handled and prepared within the station’s operating limits.

NASA’s account of human-health fundamentals describes these food-system demands and the need to support crew nutrition. Its ISS overview also places food, exercise, sleep and general well-being among the areas that require technology for human spaceflight.

Plants as a small part of living well

The Veggie plant-growth unit adds a different dimension to station life. NASA describes it as a low-power system used to supplement astronaut diets and as a tool for relaxation and recreation. On NASA’s undated Living in Space technology page, the agency says astronauts had grown eight types of leafy greens and experimented with Red Robin tomatoes. This is a specific account of Veggie’s contribution, not evidence that plants supply most station food or replace regular food resupply.

Why recycling does not make the ISS self-sufficient

Recovery systems reduce how much material has to be supplied from Earth, but the reported recovery figures themselves show that recovery is not complete. Some products, such as methane from the Sabatier reaction, are released to space. The station’s systems also require hardware, maintenance and a functioning supply and operations network. “Regenerative” therefore means that some resources are recovered and reused; it does not mean the station can operate indefinitely without outside support.

The distinction is practical. Water recovery supports repeated use of much of the station’s water, and oxygen generation turns water into breathable oxygen. But material flows do not all return to their starting point, and the systems do not remove the need for resupply. NASA’s figures should be read as stated system performance or as a particular demonstration, not as proof of a permanently closed habitat.

NASA says oxygen-generation and carbon-dioxide-scrubbing life-support systems exist on both the U.S. Orbital Segment and Russian Segment. The systems are dissimilar, which NASA says allows a larger crew and provides added safety. That redundancy does not mean the segments can simply function as separate, independent stations: the same FAQ emphasizes that the ISS segments are interdependent. Resilience comes from complementary systems and shared operations within one complex, not from assuming any segment can be detached from the rest without consequence.

What this means for everyday life aboard

Life on the ISS is supported by equipment that quietly performs work that Earth’s environment usually makes seem effortless: cleaning air, managing water, supplying oxygen and handling waste. That technical infrastructure is only one side of habitability. Crew health measures and a carefully constrained food system address what people need over a mission, while the station’s partners coordinate the hardware and operations that keep the habitat functioning.

The clearest way to understand the arrangement is as a set of connected, incomplete loops. Water is reclaimed and treated; some is used to generate oxygen. Carbon dioxide is removed, and some can react with hydrogen to produce reusable water. Exercise and nutrition help address human needs that air and water systems cannot. Resupply and international support remain part of the design, rather than signs that recycling has failed.
