The Hacksmith’s 2020 retractable “plasma” lightsaber was not a self-contained science-fiction blade. According to Futurism’s report and Hacksmith’s own project descriptions, the prototype fed compressed liquid propane and oxygen through a custom laminar-flow nozzle, producing a tightly shaped flame that the team reported at more than 4,000°F (about 2,200°C). A demonstration was reported to burn through a steel door, but the hilt depended on an external power pack and fuel system.
What The Hacksmith actually built
Hacksmith Industries, led by James Hobson, presented the device as a retractable plasma-based lightsaber. Futurism’s Victor Tangermann reported the project on October 21, 2020, while Hacksmith’s own project and campaign pages describe the engineering behind it. In practical terms, it was a high-temperature combustion torch whose flame was shaped into a narrow, blade-like column.

The word “plasma” describes the team’s framing of the project, not proof of a movie-style energy blade. The documented working principle is fuel combustion: propane and oxygen were delivered through the hilt and concentrated by a laminar nozzle.

Propane and oxygen supplied the heat
The prototype used compressed liquid propane together with oxygen. Burning the gases created the heat needed for the reported cutting demonstration. Because the oxygen supply was part of the apparatus, the blade did not draw all of its working material from the surrounding air.

A laminar nozzle shaped the flame
Hacksmith described a custom-built laminar-flow nozzle and an oxygen-rich flame as central design goals. Laminar flow keeps the gas stream comparatively smooth and coherent, helping the flame remain narrow instead of spreading like an ordinary torch flame. Futurism reported that each laminar nozzle cost about $4,000 in 2020 and required specialized glass-blowing work; that is a historical reported figure, not a current quotation.
Custom hardware controlled the system
Hacksmith’s project page lists custom electronics, switches, gas-transfer assemblies, gas-management components, an ignition chamber and nozzle. Those parts made the retractable form factor possible, but the published descriptions do not establish that the hilt alone contained all fuel, oxygen and power needed for extended operation.

What was demonstrated
| Claim or specification | What the available sources say |
|---|---|
| Temperature | Futurism reported a flame of 4,000°F; Hacksmith’s campaign page says the prototype exceeded 4,000°F. |
| Cutting performance | Futurism reported a demonstration that burned through a steel door. |
| Power and fuel arrangement | The prototype required an external power pack and associated gas supply. |
| Blade color | Futurism said salts could produce yellow, green or red flame colors. |
| Retraction | The project was described as a retractable prototype, unlike a permanently exposed torch. |
These are reported team or publication claims, not results independently reproduced in the cited material. The sources do not provide a standardized thickness, cutting speed, test protocol or laboratory measurement for the steel-door demonstration.

A flame above 4,000°F can transfer enough heat to melt or rapidly oxidize steel at the point of contact. The nozzle’s job was to keep that heat concentrated in a narrow region, while the oxygen-rich mixture supported an intense burn. That explains the reported ability to burn through metal without requiring a fictional blade made of contained light.

- LUKE SKYWALKER: Luke Skywalker was a Tatooine farmboy who rose from humble beginnings to become one of the greatest Jedi the galaxy has ever known
- TRUE TO CONTENT HILT DESIGN: Kids can act out imaginary duels with the Star Wars Non-Electronic Luke Skywalker Lightsaber, featuring a hilt inspired by Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber from the Star Wars galaxy
- FLICK TO EXTEND: This Lightsaber for kids features a blue extendable 4-segment blade that opens with the flick of the wrist (approximately 30 inches extended, 76 cm)
- FULLY RETRACTABLE BLADE: All 4 segments of the blade collapse into the hilt for easy and portable play (approximately 10 inches retracted, 25 cm)
- STAR WARS COSTUME: Use this Lightsaber toy as part of a Luke Skywalker costume for kids -- look for other roleplay toys like Star Wars masks to add to a collection (Sold separately. Subject to availability)
The trade-off is that the system behaves like industrial thermal equipment. Its range, duration and handling are constrained by fuel flow, oxygen supply, heat management and the external equipment connected to the hilt.
Retractable prototype versus a fictional lightsaber
| Characteristic | Hacksmith prototype | Movie-style lightsaber |
|---|---|---|
| Energy source | Propane and oxygen combustion | Fictional contained energy blade |
| Blade formation | Flame shaped by a laminar nozzle | Not established by real-world engineering |
| External equipment | Required an external power pack and gas system | None shown |
| Retraction | Demonstrated as a retractable prototype | Instant fictional extension and collapse |
| Demonstrated effect | Reported steel-door cutting demonstration | Fictional cutting behavior |
Color, mini-saber and later versions
Futurism reported that adding salts changed the flame color, including yellow, green and red. Color therefore came from combustion chemistry rather than a different energy-beam technology.

Hacksmith’s project page distinguishes this retractable work from earlier solid-blade and retractable designs. It also describes a separate V2 mini-saber torch inspired by the plasma prototype and directs readers to Hacksmith’s own store. That product should not be confused with the full prototype or with an illuminated collectible replica.
What remains unverified
- Hacksmith’s campaign page says the team received a Guinness World Record, but the category and wording were not independently confirmed in the available material.
- The cited sources do not include an independent test report for the temperature or cutting performance.
- No consumer-use rating, validated operating procedure or certification is supplied.
Safety and practical limits
Propane, pressurized oxygen and a flame reported above 4,000°F create severe fire, explosion, burn and oxygen-enrichment hazards. The published descriptions are an account of an engineering demonstration, not build instructions. A reader should not attempt to reproduce the apparatus without appropriate professional engineering, gas-handling controls, fire protection and regulatory compliance.
The bottom line
The Hacksmith’s “plasma lightsaber” was a retractable, externally powered propane-and-oxygen torch with a custom laminar nozzle. That design plausibly explains the reported 4,000°F flame and steel-door demonstration, while also explaining why it was not the self-contained lightsaber shown in films. The Guinness claim and performance figures should remain attributed to Hacksmith or Futurism unless independently verified.
