The name most plausibly refers to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) group that develops guidance on accounting for and auditing digital assets. How are digital assets different from crypto assets?
In the practice aid’s framework, crypto assets are a subset of digital assets, not a synonym for the entire category. The staff paper describes characteristics used to distinguish that subset, including use as a medium of exchange and considerations about whether an asset is issued by a jurisdictional authority, creates a contract with its holder, or is considered a security under specified U.S. securities laws. How to use the group’s definition
- For accounting context: Treat the cryptography-and-distributed-ledger wording as the practice aid’s broad description of digital assets.
- When a question concerns a particular crypto asset: Do not assume that the broad digital-asset description alone determines how it is classified; the narrower criteria and the surrounding facts may matter.
- For legal or regulatory questions: Check the applicable jurisdiction’s rules rather than treating the practice aid’s accounting language as a universal legal definition.
