It does not make films or guarantee savings. Its shared-value model is organizational: common governance, legal and community support, and build-and-test infrastructure can help organizations collaborate on tools and standards that serve more than one production workflow.
What the Academy Software Foundation does
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences founded ASWF in August 2018, following a two-year investigation by its Science and Technology Council into open-source use across the motion-picture industry. ASWF’s mission is to increase the quality and quantity of open-source contributions by providing governance, a legal framework, and community infrastructure. It also aims to coordinate work across projects, provide common build and test infrastructure, and make participation clearer. ASWF’s About page describes the Foundation’s origins and mission.

That makes ASWF a coordinating institution, not a studio, software vendor, or owner of every tool used in entertainment. Projects hosted by the Foundation retain their own governance. The Foundation’s role is to offer a neutral home where organizations and individuals can work together on shared technical problems.
Why open source became a coordination problem
ASWF’s account of the Academy investigation says almost 84% of the motion-picture industry used open-source software, particularly in animation and visual effects. The page does not state the underlying survey year or explain its methodology, so this is best read as a historical figure reported by ASWF—not as a current 2026 measurement or a statistic for all entertainment companies.

The same account points to problems that can arise when widely used software is developed in isolated groups: siloed development, the burden of managing multiple library versions (sometimes called “versionitis”), and inconsistent governance and licensing. When organizations depend on overlapping software but coordinate little, they may duplicate effort or face incompatible approaches. ASWF’s rationale is that a shared forum can make collaboration and stewardship more practical; the cited material does not establish a measured industry-wide cost saving.
How shared value is created
Neutral governance for contributors
A vendor-neutral home can let contributors from competing organizations work on the same project under a common governance structure. ASWF’s project guidance identifies broad industry awareness, contributors across organizations, downstream ecosystems, and project-health measurement among the potential benefits of hosting a project. Neutrality matters because shared tools need rules and decision-making that are not simply controlled by one participant’s commercial interests. ASWF’s project guidance explains the Foundation’s hosting rationale and the kinds of projects it seeks.
Shared infrastructure across projects
Build and test infrastructure can give projects common technical support rather than requiring each community to assemble every capability independently. Along with legal and community infrastructure, that support is intended to lower barriers to developing and using open-source software. Its value is cumulative: a project can serve multiple organizations, while a healthier project ecosystem can make it easier for other participants to contribute and adopt shared components.

Projects grounded in common production needs
ASWF’s guidance says a prospective hosted project should address a common motion-picture or visual-effects problem, show broad adoption or a credible path toward it, and attract multiple constituencies as contributors or maintainers. This screens for work with a plausible shared audience rather than a tool that only one organization intends to control or use.

What the Foundation’s examples show
ASWF’s August 27, 2025 Open Source Days announcement said the Foundation had more than 30 member companies. It named Adobe, AMD, Autodesk, DreamWorks, Epic Games, Intel, LAIKA, Microsoft, Netflix, NVIDIA, Samsung, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Walt Disney Studios, Weta FX, and Warner Bros. among them. The announcement also said ACES was a new project and welcomed Skydance and LAIKA as new members. This is a dated snapshot, not a verified current membership count or project roster. The 2022 Open Source in Entertainment report, produced by ASWF with Linux Foundation Research, presents the Foundation’s history, achievements, and aims. Executive Director David Morin characterized the model this way: “This is a story about a community of people that generates a tremendous amount of value around open source projects, by developing some of the software components that power all productions, and the open standards that we need for our industry to grow.” That is an executive’s description of the value proposition, not an independently measured impact statistic. Individual project participation and corporate ASWF membership are distinct routes. ASWF’s Technical Advisory Council says anyone may participate in projects, subject to each project’s governance. Corporate membership is a way for organizations to support the Foundation and engage institutionally; the available guidance does not describe it as a prerequisite for an individual to contribute to a project.

For an individual contributor
- Choose a project whose work matches your skills or interests through ASWF’s project listings.
- Check that project’s own governance and contribution guidance; the Foundation’s open-participation principle is subject to those project-specific rules.
- Contribute through the project’s established process, whether that means code, testing, documentation, or other work the project accepts.
ASWF’s participation guidance describes how project participation works.
Best Value
For a company considering membership or project support
- Assess whether the organization can contribute engineering, project resources, or financial support to work shared across multiple participants.
- For a proposed hosted project, identify the common industry problem and show how contributors or maintainers from more than one constituency could sustain it.
- Check the live membership terms. ASWF’s Join page lists corporate tiers, including Premier at $50,000 and General tiers with fees varying by employee count. It also lists an Associate category at $0 for pre-approved nonprofits, open-source projects, and government entities. Corporate ASWF membership requires corporate membership in the Linux Foundation. Because fees and eligibility can change, confirm the current terms directly before making a decision.
ASWF’s Join page has the current membership categories and requirements.
What shared value does—and does not—mean
Shared value here means that organizations with overlapping technical needs can contribute to common projects and standards, benefit from a neutral governance structure, and help sustain infrastructure used by a wider community. The approach may reduce duplicated coordination or make collaboration easier, but the sources cited here do not quantify savings, prove that every participant benefits equally, or establish that every production uses ASWF projects.
The model is most relevant when a technical problem crosses company boundaries and several organizations are willing to contribute to its upkeep. If a tool has only one user, no multi-party maintenance path, or incompatible goals among prospective contributors, hosting it as a shared industry project may offer less value.
