The 76ers should treat Tyrese Maxey as their primary offensive engine and build around what helps him most: bigger wings who defend and shoot, secondary playmaking that keeps the offense moving, and dependable frontcourt depth. Philadelphia has also invested in young talent, so development and clear roles should be part of the plan—not an automatic assumption that prospects must be traded.
Why Maxey belongs at the center of the plan
Maxey has established a strong case as Philadelphia’s lead guard. In 2024–25, he led the 76ers with career highs of 26.3 points and 6.1 assists per game, according to the team’s player profile. The team also reports that he was named a 2026 NBA All-Star starter and earned his first All-NBA Team selection for 2025–26. Those honors and figures support building around his scoring and playmaking, without implying that one roster formula guarantees success.

What kinds of teammates complement Maxey?
Big wings who can defend and shoot
Maxey’s on-ball scoring is more valuable when opponents cannot load their defense onto him without consequence. Wings with size who can guard opposing perimeter players and make open shots would help balance the lineup. A wing who can also handle the ball or create a shot gives the offense another way to function when Maxey rests or faces pressure.
NBA.com’s 2026 draft outlook identified big wings and complementary bigs as areas to consider alongside a Maxey-and-VJ Edgecombe timeline. That was a pre-draft analyst assessment, not an official team directive. Philadelphia has since made a different choice with the pick discussed in that outlook.

Frontcourt depth that can absorb availability swings
Reliable big-man minutes matter because the roster needs to remain functional when a frontcourt player is unavailable or limited. The useful traits are practical: size, rebounding, defensive coverage, and enough offensive skill to avoid clogging the floor. Depth also gives the team more flexibility to manage workloads rather than relying on one player to cover every matchup.
Enough secondary creation to keep the offense connected
Maxey can score and create for teammates, but a roster should not make him responsible for every difficult possession. A larger wing or another guard who can initiate offense, attack a closeout, or make the next pass can ease that burden. The aim is not to take the ball out of Maxey’s hands; it is to give the team a credible response when defenses concentrate on him.

Develop the young players before treating them as trade pieces
Philadelphia has used recent draft picks on VJ Edgecombe, Johni Broome, and Labaron Philon Jr. Edgecombe was selected No. 3 and Broome No. 35 in the 2025 NBA Draft. The 76ers selected Philon at No. 22 in 2026.

Philon averaged 22.0 points, 5.0 assists, and 3.5 rebounds in 33 games at Alabama in 2025–26, shooting 50.1% from the field, 39.9% from three, and 79.8% from the free-throw line, according to the team profile. Those are college results, not evidence of what he will produce in the NBA.

The sensible roster-building question is how each young player can earn a defined role: which skills translate, what minutes are available, and whether the player can help the team’s size, defense, shooting, or creation needs. Giving prospects a chance to establish their value can strengthen the rotation or clarify what the team needs next. Their draft status alone does not establish that they should be kept or moved.
Account for veteran availability and roster uncertainty
Veteran experience can help a team compete, but roster construction also has to account for availability and overlapping roles. The public snapshots reviewed here do not describe one consistent roster: the 76ers’ official roster page lists Maxey, Edgecombe, Embiid, Jaylen Brown, and LeBron James, while NBA.com’s pre-draft profile lists Paul George among players under contract. These are differently dated pages, not a verified account of the complete current roster or transaction history. Any specific claim about who is under contract should be checked against dated team announcements.

Use fit as the test, but verify the cost before proposing moves
Roster options can be compared by asking whether they improve the lineup in the areas that matter around Maxey:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Wing defense: Does the move add size and reduce the need for Maxey to take on difficult defensive assignments?
- Shooting and creation: Can the player make opponents pay for helping off them, and contribute when Maxey is pressured?
- Frontcourt function: Does the addition improve size, rebounding, or depth when availability changes?
- Development: Does the move leave meaningful opportunities for Edgecombe, Broome, and Philon to develop?
- Cost: What salary, apron consequences, and draft-pick value would the transaction require?
The last question cannot be answered responsibly with the available figures. The NBA’s official 2025–26 thresholds were a $154.647 million salary cap, $187.895 million tax level, $195.945 million first apron, and $207.824 million second apron. Those are league-wide thresholds for 2025–26 only; they do not establish Philadelphia’s current cap position, 2026–27 commitments, apron status, or tradeable picks. The NBA published the figures in 2025. A named trade target or cap route would require current contract and pick information, not an inference from those historical thresholds.
