This article maps that stack, the vendor and regulatory checkpoints attached to it, and where the public evidence stops.
What “prop trading” means on Indian exchanges
On the exchanges, proprietary trading means a trading member placing orders for its own account rather than for clients. NSE asks members to mark every order as either “Client” or “Proprietary”, and own-account orders carry the PRO designation (NSE, FAQs on User Trading Rights).

That definition sets the scope of this article. It covers exchange-member desks. Online funded-account challenges are a different arrangement and sit outside this definition, and the exchange and regulatory sources used here say nothing about them, so they are not treated as equivalent.

NSE’s trading infrastructure material lists the access modes it supports: computer-to-computer links, internet-based trading, direct market access, algorithmic trading, wireless trading and smart order routing. Co-location hosting is listed separately as exchange-provided infrastructure. Together these describe what the exchange makes available, not which combination a particular desk uses.

Exchange trading system and member front ends
Orders are entered on NSE’s NEAT trading system. Members can also use customized software front ends through the NON-NEAT facility, which allows a firm to run its own software rather than relying only on a standard interface (NSE, NSE Trading Technology – Introduction).
Algorithmic trading, APIs and direct market access
Algorithmic trading, APIs and direct market access appear in NSE’s list of access modes alongside the routes above. For a desk, the practical questions are which route its orders take and who supplies the software that runs on that route. The exchange material names these modes but does not describe how they are built, so this article does not go further into their internal design.

Smart order routing and wireless access
NSE also lists smart order routing and wireless trading as access modes. The exchange material gives no further operating detail for either, so this article describes them only by name.

Co-location hosting
NSE describes co-location as rented rack space inside exchange premises, which it says supports high-frequency trading. It is an infrastructure option a firm can take up. The exchange sources do not measure what it does for fills or profitability, and proximity to the exchange should not be read as a performance guarantee.

Vendors, empanelment and exchange-listed providers
NSE publishes a list of empanelled vendors for trading members, covering software used in trading and risk management, including algorithmic trading, APIs, direct market access and smart order routing (NSE, Empanelled Vendors (Trading Member), updated May 27, 2026).
Trading-member software empanelment
The empanelment list is the exchange’s record of software it has approved for member use in these categories. A product’s presence on the list is the only point the exchange material establishes; it says nothing about how the product performs. Check the live list rather than relying on the update date above.

Algo providers and the retail framework
NSE also publishes an empanelled algo providers list, updated September 22, 2026 (NSE, Empanelled Algo Providers of the Exchange). The page sits alongside NSE’s retail algo-provider framework, so a desk should confirm which category a listed provider falls under before assuming it fits professional use.
Regulation: the retail algo rules and where they reach
SEBI’s circular “Safer participation of retail investors in Algorithmic trading”, dated February 4, 2025, sets out a framework for retail investors using algorithms through brokers (SEBI, circular of February 4, 2025). Its subject is retail participation. For prop desks it matters mainly as a signal of how brokers, exchanges and algo providers are being held to oversight and control requirements for algorithmic order flow. It does not describe how a proprietary desk should design its own strategies.

What the two published numbers show
207,504 trading terminals
NSE reports that its pan-India high-speed network supported 207,504 terminals as of March 31, 2026 (NSE, NSE Trading Technology – Introduction). The figure measures network reach. It does not count prop firms, traders or algorithm deployments, and it should not be used as a proxy for how many desks use any given technology.
60.7% of equity-derivatives notional turnover
NSE’s July 2025 Market Pulse reports that proprietary traders accounted for 60.7% of equity-derivatives notional turnover in the period it covers. Notional turnover is the value of the underlying positions traded. NSE labels this category participation data provisional and subject to change (NSE, Market Pulse, July 2025). Read it as a 2025 reading of equity-derivatives activity, not a standing share, and not as evidence of which technologies those traders use.
How to evaluate a technology choice
When weighing a front end, an API route, an empanelled vendor product or co-location, five checks cover the questions the exchange and regulatory material raises.
- Access route and permitted user. Establish whether the tool is a member front end, an API route through a broker, a vendor product or hosted co-location, and whether it will be used for own-account (PRO) orders or client orders.
- Broker and exchange approval. Check the NSE empanelment lists and the broker’s own onboarding requirements before any build or purchase.
- Monitoring, audit logs and risk controls. Ask what the system records, who can see those records, and which limits can be set and by whom. The exchange and SEBI sources name these controls without specifying a standard, so the test is whether the vendor or broker can demonstrate them in operation.
- Operational reliability and incident handling. Ask how outages and faulty orders are reported, escalated and handled, and whether a test environment or mock session is available before go-live.
- Latency needs relative to strategy. Decide whether the strategy’s timing actually requires hosting inside exchange premises, or whether standard connectivity is enough. Co-location is a choice to justify, not a default.
What the public evidence does not establish
- How widely AI, machine learning or cloud systems are used on Indian exchange-member proprietary desks. None of the NSE or SEBI material measures adoption of these technologies.
- Whether any of the technologies above improves strategy returns, execution quality or competitive position among Indian desks.
- How the retail framework’s onboarding bar has played out for individual brokers. The extension gives the dates and the stated consequence, not outcomes.
Claims on these points should be treated as open questions until a primary source measures them.
