To improve your chances of appearing in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, make useful pages crawlable, indexable, clear, and worth citing. Google says these features rely on its existing Search systems; there is no special AI schema or file that guarantees visibility. Eligibility is not a promise that Google will crawl, index, or display a page.
How Google AI Search finds and presents pages
Google describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as features built on its Search index and systems. Its documentation explains that generative responses can use retrieval-augmented generation to ground answers in retrieved pages, and query fan-out to run related searches for a broader question. This is a high-level description, not a reverse-engineered ranking formula. The features may use different models and techniques, so their responses and linked sources can vary. Google’s AI features guidance and guidance on generative AI content describe the current approach.

Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear as a Search snippet to be considered. Its documentation is explicit: “Just because a page meets all requirements, best practices, and complies with the policies, doesn’t mean that Google will crawl, index, or serve its content.” There are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews or AI Mode, according to Google’s documentation, last updated December 10, 2025.

Start by checking whether Google can reach and interpret the pages that matter. Work through these checks before investing in new content:
#1 Best Overall
- Check crawling and hosting rules. Review robots.txt and any firewall, CDN, or hosting restrictions that could prevent Google from fetching important URLs.
- Link important pages internally. Make product, use-case, documentation, and research pages discoverable through ordinary site links rather than leaving them isolated.
- Confirm indexing and snippet eligibility. Use Search Console to inspect important URLs and address technical issues that prevent indexing or a Search snippet.
- Put essential information in visible text. Explain what the product does, who it serves, requirements, limitations, and examples on the page itself. Use accurate titles and headings.
- Use media and structured data accurately. Add relevant images or video when they help users understand the subject. Structured data should match content people can see; it is not a substitute for that content.
- Review page experience. Ensure pages work reliably and are usable on the devices and connections your customers use.
Google says no special AI schema or machine-readable file is required for these features. Follow its technical guidance for AI features alongside the ordinary requirements of Search.
What content gives a startup a reason to be cited?
Technical eligibility only makes a page a candidate. A stronger editorial case is content that answers a real customer question with information a generic page cannot provide. Google’s guidance emphasizes unique, useful material and first-hand perspectives, rather than commodity pages that repackage what is already widely available.

Prioritize pages tied to decisions and problems
- Product and use-case pages: explain the problem, intended users, practical workflow, and where the product is or is not a fit.
- Implementation guides: document setup, integration choices, prerequisites, and common failure points using details your team can verify.
- Original research or analysis: show the method, scope, and limitations behind any data or conclusions.
- Comparisons grounded in product knowledge: state the criteria and evidence behind the comparison instead of repeating generic feature lists.
- Support content: answer recurring customer questions directly, including constraints and troubleshooting steps.
Add evidence only your team can responsibly provide
Useful differentiators may include product observations, demonstrations, expert explanations, or customer case details shared with permission. If you publish a benchmark, describe how it was run and what it does not establish. Do not claim first-hand use that did not happen, or turn a limited example into a universal result. The goal is to make the page more useful and inspectable for a reader, not to manufacture signals for an answer engine.

AI can assist with research and structure, but publishing many lightly edited pages is not a shortcut to visibility. Google warns that producing pages at scale without adding value for users may violate its scaled content abuse policies. Have a subject-matter editor verify factual claims, add original analysis or experience, and remove unsupported or repetitive material before publication. Does llms.txt help with Google AI Search?
Google’s June 15, 2026 update says llms.txt is not needed for Google Search and has no positive or negative effect on Google Search visibility or ranking. That statement is specific to Google; it does not establish how other AI platforms use the file. For Google visibility, prioritize crawl access, indexing eligibility, and useful content rather than treating llms.txt as a ranking tactic. Google’s AI features documentation is the relevant reference.
How to tell whether AI Search is sending traffic
Google says traffic from AI Search features is included in Search Console’s Performance report under Web search. That reporting does not provide a universal citation score or a cross-platform count of how often an AI system mentions a company.
- Set a baseline. In Search Console, review the Performance report’s Web search data for the pages and periods that matter to the business.
- Compare over time and by page. Look for changes in clicks and impressions on priority pages, while accounting for seasonality, launches, and other marketing activity.
- Check business outcomes in analytics. Track relevant referrals, engagement, and conversions in your analytics platform. Interpret referral attribution cautiously because the Search Console report groups AI-feature traffic within Web search.
- Keep platform and geography in view. Google Search reporting does not measure visibility across every answer engine; changes may also differ by market and audience.
Google’s Liz Reid, VP and Head of Google Search, wrote on August 6, 2025 that overall organic click volume from Google Search had been relatively stable year over year and that average click quality had increased. Those are Google’s statements about its aggregate data, not an independent study or a forecast for any startup. They do not establish a startup-specific traffic lift from appearing in AI results. Reid’s post also notes that people continue to click when they want to explore a subject, read a review, or make a purchase.
How to prioritize the work
| Work | When it deserves priority | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fix access or indexability | An important page is blocked, isolated, or not eligible for a Search snippet. | Robots.txt and infrastructure rules, internal links, and URL status in Search Console. |
| Improve an existing page | The page targets a useful customer question but leaves key details unclear or unsupported. | Visible explanation, examples, accuracy, and whether structured data reflects visible content. |
| Create a new page | Your team has distinctive evidence or expertise that helps a customer make a decision. | Original value, clear scope, and a genuine audience need—not simply more URLs. |
| Measure outcomes | You need to determine whether search visibility supports business goals. | Search Console Web performance alongside analytics for referrals, engagement, and conversions. |
