Tea can help a laboratory-developed coating adhere to surfaces—but it is only one ingredient. The formulation described in an ACS Applied Nano Materials search-result abstract combines brewed tea with cinnamaldehyde essential oil and a copper or silver salt. The reported coating inhibited bacteria in laboratory tests; the available evidence does not establish it as a household disinfectant or an approved medical treatment.
How can tea stains help a coating adhere?
The idea draws on tea’s familiar tendency to leave a stain. In the reported hybrid formulation, brewed tea is part of a mixture that also contains cinnamaldehyde essential oil and a copper or silver salt. The paper attributes the coating’s adhesion to the tea-staining phenomenon: tea helps the material remain on a range of surfaces.

This is not a coating made from tea alone. Nor does the reported adhesion mean that an ordinary tea stain disinfects a surface. The antibacterial result belongs to the combined formulation described in the paper.
What did the study report?
The ACS search-result abstract reports antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli), a Gram-negative bacterium, and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), a Gram-positive bacterium. It also says the coating adhered to silicon, glass, polyester, nonwoven polypropylene, PTFE and cotton.

These are laboratory-paper findings, not proof of performance in homes, hospitals or other everyday settings. The accessible abstract does not establish how long the coating lasts, whether it is safe for people in a particular application, or whether it reduces infections. How this work differs from other tea-based coatings
Several studies use tea or tea-processing by-products in surface and material research, but their ingredients, substrates and tests differ. Their results should not be treated as direct confirmation of the brewed-tea hybrid coating or compared as if they used the same method.

Can you use it at home?
The available sources do not establish a consumer-ready product, a validated home-use recipe, safety instructions for household application, or regulatory clearance. Do not treat brewed tea or a visible tea stain as an antibacterial treatment. The reported findings describe research formulations and tests, not a practical surface-disinfection method.
