How Sulfur Helps Cadmium-Free Blue Quantum Dots Keep Their Performance

A sulfur-assisted synthesis produced more uniform ZnSeTeS quantum dots for a blue QLED prototype, with promising reported metrics but no established commercial readiness.

Adding a reactive sulfur compound during synthesis helped a research team produce more uniform zinc–selenium–tellurium quantum dots, or ZnSeTeS, for a blue quantum-dot LED (QLED). A 2025 report says the prototype achieved 24.7% external quantum efficiency, a 17 nm emission linewidth at 460 nm, and a reported half-lifetime of 30,000 hours. Those are promising laboratory results, not proof that cadmium-free quantum-dot displays are ready for sale.

What changed in the cadmium-free quantum dots?

The team led by Xuyong Yang at Shanghai University worked with zinc–selenium–tellurium (ZnSeTe) quantum dots. During synthesis, the researchers added a reactive sulfur-triphenylphosphite reagent. The resulting material is described as ZnSeTeS.

Quantum dots are semiconductor nanocrystals whose optical and electronic properties depend on their size, as optoelectronics researcher Yajie Dong explained to Chemistry World. In this work, the change was not a new display product or a different way to operate a screen; it was an adjustment to how the light-emitting nanocrystals were made.

What does sulfur do?

The proposed explanation is that sulfur helps keep tellurium from clustering into pockets within the crystal. A more even distribution of tellurium is associated with a more uniform ZnSeTeS structure and fewer defects that can trap electrons. Fewer such defects may help the material emit blue light more efficiently and with a narrower range of wavelengths.

The mechanism and reported measurements are described in Victoria Atkinson’s March 25, 2025, Chemistry World report, which cites Q. Wu and colleagues’ 2025 paper in Nature (DOI: 10.1038/s41586-025-08645-4). The figures below are attributed to that report; the full paper and supplementary methods were not independently checked for this account.

What performance did the prototype report?

Measure Reported ZnSeTeS prototype result What it indicates
External quantum efficiency 24.7%, as reported by Chemistry World in 2025 The share of electrical input converted into emitted light, expressed as an efficiency measure.
Emission linewidth 17 nm at 460 nm, as reported by Chemistry World in 2025 A narrower emission band can mean more tightly defined blue output and better color purity.
Half-lifetime 30,000 hours, as reported by Chemistry World in 2025 The report presents this as the prototype’s half-lifetime; it does not establish commercial-display durability.

The same report says the quantum efficiency was more than twice that of the original ZnSeTe lattice. It also quotes Dong describing the 24.7% result as among the best-performing cadmium-free blue QLEDs and the narrow emission as useful for display color purity. These comparisons are the report’s characterization, not a standardized head-to-head product test: the account does not provide a complete set of common test conditions for comparing devices.

How does it compare with cadmium-containing quantum dots?

Cadmium-containing quantum dots are discussed as a performance benchmark, while ZnSeTeS is presented as a heavy-metal-free alternative. The available report does not give enough matched data to make a reliable numerical comparison across material composition, emission wavelength and linewidth, efficiency, and operational lifetime. It therefore supports a promising result for one experimental cadmium-free device, not a claim that it outperforms every cadmium-based display material.

Are cadmium-free blue quantum-dot displays ready?

No commercial readiness is established by these results. The work concerns synthesized nanocrystals and an experimental LED device, and the report says device stability and lifetime still need optimization before commercial electronics use. A reported half-lifetime for a prototype should not be treated as a guarantee of how long a consumer display will last under real operating conditions.

Blue QLEDs could eventually contribute to full-color displays alongside red and green QLEDs, or potentially serve as a backplane technology replacing blue organic LEDs, as Dong noted in the report. Those are possible applications, not products shown to be available now. The report identifies no consumer device, validated supplier, or purchasing route based on this material.
