Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A TV show appears on a streaming service only in the countries and during the periods covered by the service’s rights. Those rights can be divided by territory, shared or exclusive, and subject to start and end dates. That is why the same show may be on different services—or unavailable—depending on where you watch.
Why a show’s streaming availability varies by country
Copyright and related rights are territorial in practical licensing: permission to distribute a program in one country does not automatically grant permission elsewhere. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) describes territorial licensing as permitting or restricting use according to jurisdiction in its report on territorial licensing and copyright FAQ.

A streaming service therefore needs the relevant rights for each territory where it offers a title. A deal might cover one country, several countries, or a wider region. The rights holder may make different deals in different places, so one service can carry a show in one country while a competitor carries it elsewhere. The service operating in a country does not, by itself, mean it has the rights to every show there.

A program can involve several rights holders, such as a studio, distributor, or other owner. A platform negotiates permission to stream it under an agreement. The agreement may specify the territories, the rights granted, whether those rights are exclusive, and how long they last. The exact terms vary by contract and applicable national law.

Exclusivity can prevent competing services from streaming a title in the covered territory during the agreed period. Rights can also be split across regions or held by different parties. Netflix’s regional availability explanation, for example, says it may have rights in Latin America before it has them in the United States or Canada. It also notes that a title may be unavailable if no one is selling the rights or another platform has exclusive rights.
Why availability changes over time
Licenses expire or are renewed
Streaming licenses are not necessarily permanent. Netflix says its renewal decisions can involve whether rights remain available, a title’s popularity in a region, and licensing cost. If the service does not renew, the title leaves; if it does, it remains. These are factors in Netflix’s explanation, not a complete account of how every platform makes licensing decisions. See Netflix’s explanation of title expiry.

Territories can join a deal at different times
A deal described as global may still take effect market by market. In a January 15, 2026 announcement, Netflix and Sony Pictures Entertainment said their global Pay-1 film arrangement would roll out as individual territory rights became available, with full global availability planned for early 2029. The announcement also mentions selected television-library rights, but the arrangement is principally a film deal; it illustrates how rights can become available in stages, not a universal timetable for TV shows. What to check when a show is missing
Rights are one explanation, but a missing title can also reflect its release timing or account settings. If you are troubleshooting on Netflix, check these factors:

- Profile language: Netflix identifies profile language as another setting that can affect what you see.

For a particular show, compare listings using the same country and the same date. A useful check should distinguish an active subscription listing from a rental or purchase option, if those are also shown. Look for the territory, the licensing window if disclosed, and whether the rights appear exclusive or shared. If a title is absent, consider release timing and profile settings before concluding that it has no rights deal.
