Stock orders are instructions, not guaranteed outcomes. A market order emphasizes getting filled, a limit order sets the worst acceptable price, a stop order activates when a trigger is reached and then becomes a market order, and a stop-limit order adds a price boundary after activation. The key distinction is execution priority versus price control: no order type guarantees both an immediate fill and a particular price.
What happens after you submit a stock order?
Your order does not jump directly from your screen to a guaranteed trade. It travels to your brokerage, which determines how and where to route it. The destination then matches it with available orders. Prices and available shares can change during that process, even when the quote on your screen looked current.

A displayed bid or offer applies only to the quantity available at that level. If your order is larger than that quantity, it can be filled in pieces at several prices. The last traded price is also only a record of a previous transaction; it is not a promise that your next shares will trade there.

In real trading, “immediately” means the order generally seeks prompt execution under available market conditions, not that every share must fill at one price or that an order can never be affected by a halt, lack of liquidity, or a closed session.

What is the difference between a market order and a limit order?
| Order instruction | What it prioritizes | Price boundary | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market | Prompt execution | None | The fill can differ from the displayed quote or last trade; different portions can execute at different prices. |
| Limit | Price control | Maximum price for a buy; minimum price for a sell | The order may not execute at all. |
| Stop | A triggered attempt to buy or sell | None after activation | The trigger can occur on a brief move, and the resulting market fill can differ substantially from the stop price. |
| Stop-limit | A trigger plus price control | A limit applies after activation | The order can remain unfilled if the market moves beyond the limit. |
How a market order works
A market order tells the broker to seek the best available prices rather than wait for a specific price. For a buy, available sell offers are taken in the order the market can provide them; for a sell, available bids are used. If only a small number of shares are available at the first price, the remainder can execute at the next available prices.
This is why a quote or chart price is not a guaranteed market-order fill. A rapidly moving security, a thinly traded security, or a large order can produce a result far from the price you saw before submitting the order.
How a limit order works
A buy limit sets the highest price you are willing to pay. It can execute at that price or lower, but never at a higher price under the instruction’s terms. A sell limit sets the lowest price you are willing to accept and can execute at that price or higher.

Does a stop-loss sell at the stop price?
No. A stop-loss is usually a sell stop used to attempt to exit a long position. It has a stop price, but that price is a trigger—not a guaranteed sale price.

When the stop price is reached under the broker’s trigger rules, a standard stop order becomes a market order. The broker then seeks available bids. If the market is moving quickly or has little liquidity, those bids may be well below the stop price. A temporary intraday move can activate the order even if the security later rebounds.
A sell stop is commonly placed below the current market price. A buy stop is commonly placed above the current price and can be used in connection with a short position. In either direction, the distance between the current price and the stop is not a guaranteed maximum loss. The eventual fill, position size, gaps, and other costs determine the realized result.
Trigger price versus execution price
Suppose a share is trading around $50 and a sell stop is entered at $47. If the stop condition is met, the order changes into a market order. It might fill near $47 in a liquid, orderly market, but it could fill lower if available bids have moved down. The $47 figure tells the system when to activate; it does not reserve a buyer at $47.
Brokerages can use different standards to decide whether a stop has been reached. Some use last-sale prices, while others use quotation prices or defined combinations. A stop that triggers under one firm’s methodology might not trigger at the same instant under another’s.
How does a stop-limit order differ from a stop order?
A stop-limit order combines two prices and two stages:

- The stop price is the activation trigger.
- Once triggered, the order becomes a limit order with its own limit price.
For a sell stop-limit, the stop might activate as the market falls, while the limit specifies the lowest acceptable sale price. For a buy stop-limit, the stop activates as the market rises, and the limit specifies the highest acceptable purchase price. The stop and limit prices do not have to match.
This structure preserves a price boundary after activation, but it can leave you holding the position. If a falling market moves below a sell stop-limit’s limit, no buyer may be available at or above that limit, so the order can remain open. A standard stop seeks an exit without a price cap; a stop-limit rejects prices outside its boundary, even when that means no execution.
What is a trailing stop?
The SEC describes a trailing stop as a stop or stop-limit order whose stop price is not fixed. Instead, the stop is designed to adjust according to the broker’s trailing rule as the market moves. Availability, adjustment frequency, reference price, and behavior during gaps or outside regular trading sessions vary by brokerage.
Do not assume that two firms implement a trailing feature the same way. Read the broker’s explanation for whether the trail is specified in dollars or a percentage, when it updates, which quote is used, and what happens after activation. A trailing stop still has the same central distinction as any other stop: its trigger is not a guaranteed execution price, and a trailing stop-limit can fail to fill after triggering.
How to choose the instruction’s priority
There is no universally superior order type. Decide which risk matters more in the particular transaction: not getting filled, or getting filled at an unexpectedly unfavorable price.

- When execution priority matters most: a market order generally seeks a prompt fill, but offers no price cap.
- When price control matters most: a limit order sets an acceptable price range, but can remain unfilled.
- When you need a conditional trigger: a stop activates only after the specified condition, then becomes a market order unless it is a stop-limit.
- When you need a trigger and a boundary: a stop-limit adds price control after activation, accepting the possibility of no execution.
This is an explanation of mechanics, not a recommendation for a particular security, account, or portfolio. Your broker may restrict certain instructions or apply additional conditions.
How to place and verify an order
Labels and screens differ, but the decision sequence is similar. Use the exact descriptions shown by your brokerage rather than assuming that a familiar label has identical behavior elsewhere.
- Select the security and side. Confirm the ticker, whether you are buying or selling, and the number of shares.
- Choose the order type. Select market, limit, stop, stop-limit, or another instruction offered by the firm.
- Enter every required price. A limit order needs a limit price. A stop order needs a stop price. A stop-limit needs both, and the interface should identify which field is the trigger and which is the boundary.
- Set duration and session coverage. Check whether the order is for the current session, remains open until a stated expiration, or is eligible outside regular trading hours. Session rules can affect both triggering and execution.
- Read the confirmation screen. Verify quantity, side, prices, estimated buying power or proceeds, and any warning that the order may execute partially or not at all.
- Monitor status and fills. “Open,” “triggered,” “partially filled,” “filled,” “canceled,” and “rejected” describe different states. A triggered stop-limit is not necessarily filled; it has only become a limit order.
- Check the execution report. Review the actual prices and quantities. A single order can have multiple fills at different prices.
Why didn’t my limit order fill?
The quoted price alone does not prove that your order should have executed. Common explanations include:
- The market never reached your limit under the relevant bid or offer.
- The price touched your limit, but the available quantity was exhausted by orders ahead of yours.
- The market moved through the price too quickly for a match at your requested quantity.
- Your order was submitted outside the session in which it could execute.
- The security or account was subject to a trading restriction, a halt, or a broker-specific rule.
- Only part of the requested quantity was available, leaving the remainder open.
Check the order’s time-in-force, remaining quantity, submission timestamp, and the broker’s execution or queue explanation. Do not infer a guaranteed fill from a chart’s high or low; those values do not show how many shares were available to your order at each moment.
What changes in fast or thin markets?
Fast markets can create a larger gap between the displayed price, a trigger, and an execution. A quote may update several times while an order is routed. A thin market may have only a small number of shares near the current price, so a market order can consume multiple price levels. News, a gap between sessions, or a temporary order imbalance can produce the same problem.

These conditions affect order types differently. A market order is more likely to seek a fill but can accept a surprising price. A limit order refuses prices outside its boundary but may not trade. A stop can activate during a brief spike or drop and then accept the market’s available price. A stop-limit can protect the boundary and still leave the position open.
Which broker rules must you check?
Before relying on any conditional order, read the firm’s order-type documentation and confirmation text. Check:
- How the firm determines that a stop price has been reached: last sale, quotation, or another method.
- Whether stops and trailing stops work during regular hours only or also during extended sessions.
- Which order types are available for the security, account, exchange, and trading session.
- Whether the firm permits fractional shares, partial fills, or specific time-in-force choices for that instruction.
- How the firm handles cancellations, replacements, rejections, and an order that triggers outside normal liquidity.
The SEC Investor Bulletin on stop orders was originally dated July 12, 2017 and updated August 18, 2026. Its definitions are useful, but the operational details that determine triggering and routing come from your brokerage and the trading venue.

Other instructions you may see
Broker order tickets can also include immediate-or-cancel, fill-or-kill, all-or-none, on-open, and on-close instructions. These modify how long an order can wait, whether partial execution is allowed, or when execution may occur. They do not remove the basic trade-off between execution and price. Read the firm’s definition for each one before using it.
Practical checks before submitting
- Confirm whether you are entering a market, limit, stop, or stop-limit instruction.
- For a stop-limit, verify both prices and their relationship to the current market.
- Ask whether the displayed quote represents enough available quantity for your order.
- Decide what should happen if only part of the order fills.
- Check session eligibility, expiration, and cancellation rules.
- Remember that a stop trigger is not a loss guarantee and a limit is not a fill guarantee.
The central trade-off
Market orders generally favor getting the trade done; limit orders favor staying within a price boundary. Stop orders add a condition before a market order is released. Stop-limit orders add both a condition and a boundary, accepting that the trade may never happen. Once you separate the trigger from the fill and execution priority from price control, the behavior of each instruction—and the reason an order can surprise you—becomes much easier to understand.
