Changing the three-dimensional arrangement of energetic groups on a cage-like molecule can change its measured properties—even when the molecules have the same formula and connectivity. A 2025 study in Chemical Science synthesized seven stereoisomers based on a 2,4,10-trioxaadamantane cage and reported differences in density, stability and detonation behavior. Its strongest performance comparison was a single lead-plate perforation test, not evidence that any compound is broadly equivalent to an established explosive.
What the researchers changed
Stereoisomers share the same molecular connectivity but differ in how atoms are arranged in space. In this study, the researchers varied the relative stereochemistry of energetic groups attached to a three-dimensional 2,4,10-trioxaadamantane framework. They prepared two sets: four trinitrate diastereomers and three tetranitro diastereomers. Members of each set share a molecular formula and energetic-group positions, but differ in configuration.

The question was whether those spatial differences would matter in solid materials. The paper reports that they did: isomers differed in properties including crystal density and stability, and the authors examined detonation performance. The result is laboratory evidence that stereochemical configuration can influence energetic-material properties, rather than proof of a general design rule for all such compounds. The 2025 Chemical Science paper describes the work.

A molecule’s formula does not tell the whole story about a crystal. Stereochemistry can affect how molecules fit together and interact in the solid state. The researchers attributed the highest density in their set to strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding, giving a structural explanation for why one configuration packed differently from others.

The (exo, endo) tetranitro isomer had the highest reported crystal density: 1.980 g cm−3, as measured and reported by the research team in 2025. This is a comparison within the seven compounds studied, not a claim that the isomer is the densest energetic material overall. Chemistry World reported that the team chose the trioxaadamantane framework for its design flexibility. Its report on the study also describes the structural comparison.
What the performance test showed—and did not show
In a lead-plate perforation test, the high-density (exo, endo) tetranitro isomer performed comparably to RDX, according to the study as reported by Chemistry World. The researchers also tested the high-density isomer against the lowest-density diastereomer. That result should be kept in its narrow context: it is one test, not a complete performance assessment or proof of equivalence to RDX across conditions and uses.

The paper also reports positive oxygen-balance values based on CO for all seven compounds. This is a paper-specific calculated/material descriptor; by itself, it does not establish practical performance. The available accounts do not provide a complete, decision-ready safety and performance comparison across all seven isomers, so they do not support ranking the entire set.

Why the finding is relevant to materials research
Jun Luo of Nanjing University of Science and Technology told Chemistry World that computational predictions for energetic materials are usually made in the gas state and do not account for stereochemistry. The team therefore synthesized and tested three-dimensional compounds, which he said may be more affected by stereochemistry than many flatter compounds.

The implication is a research direction, not a ready-made application: when evaluating a candidate molecule, researchers may need to consider how its stereochemical arrangement affects its solid-state structure and measured properties, rather than relying on molecular formula or gas-phase calculations alone. Dheeraj Kumar of the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee told Chemistry World that the work could encourage chemists to revisit existing molecules and consider changing the relative positions of energetic groups. Neither comment demonstrates that such changes will reliably improve performance.

The primary paper warns that some of the compounds are potentially explosive and sensitive to impact and friction. It specifically says mechanical actions such as scraping or scratching must be avoided and calls for appropriate standard safety precautions in operations involving these materials. These are laboratory substances, not consumer materials; the study does not establish that they are commercially available or suitable for general use.
