Steam Frame does not require a PC for every game: it can run selected titles locally on its SteamOS-based hardware, or stream PC games wirelessly. SteamVR is part of the PC-play path, while Valve’s Steam Frame Standalone Verified label is the more relevant check for games you want to run on the headset itself.
Two ways to play: stream from a PC or run locally
Steam Frame is designed primarily for PC game streaming, but Valve describes it as a full SteamOS PC with standalone capabilities. In streaming mode, the PC runs the game and sends its audio and visuals to the headset. In standalone mode, the headset runs a supported game itself, without being connected to a PC.

These modes have separate compatibility and performance considerations. A game being in your Steam library—or being playable through SteamVR on a PC—does not by itself mean it will run locally on Steam Frame.
What SteamVR does in a Steam Frame setup
SteamVR is Valve’s PC-side VR platform. It supports Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality headsets and other supported PC VR headsets. For Steam Frame, SteamVR belongs to the PC-streaming context: the PC runs the VR game, and the headset receives the stream. Valve says Steam Frame’s controllers support the full SteamVR catalog, but that should not be read as a claim that every SteamVR game runs locally on the headset.

Valve says users can stream their entire Steam library to Steam Frame. That describes the streaming option, not universal standalone compatibility. For local play, look for the game’s Steam Frame Standalone Verified status.
How the wireless PC connection is described
Valve lists an included plug-and-play 6 GHz wireless adapter for a dedicated streaming connection. Steam Frame also has Wi-Fi 7 and dual radios, with one radio described as dedicated to streaming and the other to Wi-Fi. Valve calls its approach Multi-Link Streaming and says it routes data over available headset connections to improve reliability and consistency. Those are manufacturer descriptions; Valve’s reviewed product page does not provide an independently measured latency or image-quality result.

Which games run on the headset itself?
Steam Frame is built around a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and 16 GB of unified LPDDR5X memory, according to Valve. It can run a growing selection of VR and non-VR games locally. Valve’s Standalone Verified program assesses the out-of-box standalone experience, including performance, readable text and interface elements, and controller configuration.

SteamVR PC requirements: a baseline, not a streaming guarantee
Valve’s SteamVR listing publishes the following minimum PC requirements. It specifies Windows 10 or later for the Steam client, despite also showing older operating-system entries in the listing.

- Choose the play mode. Decide whether you want the PC to run the game and stream it, or whether you want the game to run locally on Steam Frame.
- Check the game against that mode. For PC VR, confirm the game works with SteamVR and your PC headset setup. For local play, check whether the title is Steam Frame Standalone Verified.
- Compare your PC with Valve’s SteamVR baseline. Treat the published minimums as a starting point, then account for the individual game’s demands. They are not a dedicated Steam Frame streaming guarantee.
- Consider the wireless environment. Valve describes the included 6 GHz adapter and the headset’s wireless features, but does not publish a numeric network-speed threshold or guaranteed latency on the reviewed product page.
What Valve’s specifications do—and do not—establish
Valve lists a 2160 × 2160 LCD resolution per eye, along with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 16 GB unified memory and included 6 GHz adapter. The product page also describes foveated streaming as offering “over a 10x improvement,” but the cited material does not define the comparison or test conditions needed to treat that figure as a general performance benchmark. No independent performance measurement is established in the cited sources.
