If a conventional bank loan is unavailable, a U.S. startup can still investigate SBA-backed lending, nonprofit microloan intermediaries, equity investment, crowdfunding, or a narrowly targeted grant. The right next step depends on what the money will pay for, whether the business can repay debt, how much ownership founders are willing to trade, and whether they can meet fundraising rules. Start by defining the need and preparing credible financials—not by assuming any funding route guarantees approval.
What can I do if my startup can’t get a bank loan?
First separate “a bank said no” from “the business cannot safely take on debt.” SBA-supported loans are still loans made by participating lenders, and those lenders assess applications. SBA says 7(a) applicants generally need to be creditworthy and show a reasonable ability to repay. An SBA guarantee can support a lender’s loan; it is not a grant, a waiver of repayment, or a promise of approval. See the SBA’s 7(a) program guidance.
If repayment is plausible, ask whether a participating lender or a local nonprofit intermediary offers a program suited to the amount and use. If scheduled repayment would put the business under pressure, investigate equity or a suitable crowdfunding model instead. Grants are worth pursuing only when the company’s activity matches a defined program. These SBA and SEC routes are U.S.-specific.
Personal savings are also common, but that does not mean founders should risk money they cannot afford to lose. The SBA Office of Advocacy’s Small Business Finance Frequently Asked Questions 2024 reports that 80 percent of employer businesses and 76 percent of nonemployers used personal savings for startup capital; the report attributes the figures to the Small Business Credit Survey. Those figures describe businesses using savings, not the proportion of startup capital that savings supplied. Read the 2024 report.

How can I fund a startup without a bank loan?
These routes are not interchangeable. Match the requested amount and purpose to the program, then weigh the obligations alongside the potential access to capital.
| Route | Potential fit | Main obligation or limit |
|---|---|---|
| SBA 7(a) through a participating lender | Eligible business needs such as working capital, equipment, and supplies; maximum loan amount is $5 million on the SBA program page accessed in 2026. | Debt subject to lender underwriting, SBA and lender eligibility rules, and repayment capacity. |
| SBA microloan through a nonprofit intermediary | Smaller startup or expansion needs; up to $50,000 under the SBA program page accessed in 2026. | Debt with intermediary-set terms; cannot be used to refinance existing debt or buy real estate. |
| SBIC or other private equity | Businesses whose growth prospects and funding needs fit an investor’s strategy. | Equity dilutes ownership and may bring investor rights, governance, and growth expectations. |
| SBIC debt | A business that fits a licensed fund’s investment criteria and can service financing. | Debt requires repayment and interest; fund and company fit vary. |
| Rewards or pre-sale crowdfunding | A product or creative project with a compelling offer and an audience to reach. | Requires delivering what was promised; platform terms and obligations vary. |
| Regulation Crowdfunding securities offering | An eligible company seeking investment from the public through a compliant offering. | Securities rules, disclosures, a registered intermediary, and investor limits apply. |
| Targeted grant | A defined eligible activity such as certain research and development, exporting, or manufacturing work. | Purpose and eligibility are narrow; ordinary startup or expansion funding is not generally available from SBA. |
How should I define the amount and prepare before approaching funders?
1. Specify the need and permitted use
Write down the amount, when it is needed, and each expense it will cover. Separate working capital, inventory, equipment, real estate, and refinancing: an option that fits one purpose may prohibit another. For example, SBA microloans may be used for working capital, inventory, supplies, furniture, fixtures, machinery, and equipment, but not for existing debt or real estate purchases. The SBA microloan page says the program serves small businesses and certain not-for-profit childcare centers.
2. Build a plan funders can evaluate
Prepare a business plan, an itemized expense sheet, cash-flow assumptions, and financial projections. SBA planning guidance points to five-year financial projections as part of preparing to seek funding. Make the assumptions legible: expected sales, timing of customer payments, recurring costs, and what changes if revenue arrives later than planned. The SBA’s business-planning guidance is a free starting point. A workbook can help organize the material, but it cannot secure approval.

3. Test whether debt is genuinely affordable
Ask a lender what documentation it needs and whether the proposed amount and use fit its products. SBA’s loan directory and Lender Match can help identify starting points; local SBA resource partners can also offer counseling. A match or referral is not an approval. On the SBA’s current 7(a) page, the maximum loan amount is $5 million; the participating lender originates the loan and makes its credit decision under applicable program and lender requirements.

For a smaller need, contact an SBA-approved nonprofit microloan intermediary. The SBA says microloans are available up to $50,000, with an average of about $13,000; its current page generally gives rates of 8% to 13%, while the intermediary sets the actual rate and terms. The maximum repayment term is seven years. These are program-page figures accessed in 2026, not a quote for a particular borrower. Ask the intermediary directly for a complete offer and payment schedule.
4. Consider whether equity fits the company’s growth model
Selling ownership can provide capital without scheduled loan principal payments, but it is not free money: founders give up part of the company and may accept investor rights, oversight, or expectations about growth and returns. SBA explains that an ownership sale dilutes existing owners. Discuss valuation, voting and information rights, board or observer roles, future fundraising, and exit expectations before signing.

One avenue to investigate is an SBIC, a privately owned investment fund licensed by the SBA. SBICs may invest through debt, equity, or both; the SBA does not invest directly in the operating company through this program. Fund strategy and company fit differ, so the existence of the program does not mean a particular startup will qualify or receive an offer. See SBA investment capital information and its guidance on growing a business.
Should I use crowdfunding or give investors equity?
Rewards and pre-sales are offers, not securities
Rewards crowdfunding or pre-sales may suit a product or creative project: supporters contribute in exchange for a reward or a product rather than an ownership stake. A campaign can also test whether an audience responds to the offer. Before launch, cost out production, delivery, returns, and delays; money raised does not remove the obligation to meet the campaign’s terms. Platform rules and fees vary. SBA’s planning guidance discusses crowdfunding as a funding option.

Regulation Crowdfunding is different from a donation, reward, or pre-sale campaign: the company sells securities. SEC guidance says an eligible company may raise up to $5 million in a 12-month period through this exemption. The offering must take place through an SEC-registered broker-dealer or funding portal, and disclosure and investor-limit requirements apply. The SEC’s page was last reviewed or updated April 24, 2025; check current requirements and get qualified securities counsel before proceeding. Choose based on what supporters or investors receive and what the company can responsibly deliver or disclose. A product campaign is not a substitute for a securities-law-compliant investment offering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are there grants to start or grow a small business?
For an ordinary for-profit startup seeking general operating or expansion cash, do not treat an SBA grant as a likely funding source. The SBA states: “SBA does not provide grants for starting and expanding a business.” Its limited grant support is directed to specific areas, including research and development, exporting, manufacturing, and organizations that support entrepreneurship. The agency’s additional funding opportunities and grants page describe the scope.
Search for a grant only after identifying the exact eligible activity, administering agency, location, application cycle, and permitted expenses. Be wary of anyone promising an SBA grant in exchange for an upfront fee or presenting a grant as guaranteed startup capital.

How do I compare funding offers before accepting?
Compare the full obligation, not just the amount offered or the speed of a headline promise. SBA notes that lender eligibility requirements and terms vary. For any debt proposal, ask for the complete written terms, payment schedule, and fees; for an investment, have qualified counsel explain the ownership and governance documents.
- Total cash cost: principal, interest, origination or other fees, and the amount and timing of each payment.
- Security and recourse: collateral requirements and any personal guarantee or other obligation the owners would assume.
- Use restrictions: whether the funds can pay for the specific expenses in your plan.
- Timing and conditions: eligibility, underwriting or due diligence, conditions to closing, and realistic time to funding.
- Ownership and control: for equity, the percentage sold, investor rights, reporting expectations, and likely effect on future decisions.
- Compliance and delivery: for securities fundraising, disclosure and intermediary duties; for a rewards campaign, fulfillment, customer communication, and platform terms.
- Downside fit: whether the business can still meet its obligations if sales are slower, costs rise, or funding takes longer than expected.
Use the same business plan and projections to compare routes, adjusting them for each offer’s payment burden, restrictions, and ownership consequences. If no available offer fits the company’s repayment capacity, permitted use, timing, or willingness to share control, revising the funding amount or timing is safer than accepting capital on terms the business cannot sustain.
