After Atlas V separation, it raises and fine-tunes its orbit, catches the ISS, approaches in controlled stages, waits for flight-controller clearance, and then aligns with Harmony’s forward-facing port for autonomous contact.
Automation handles the planned guidance and steering, but the operation is supervised throughout. Astronauts monitor systems, verify navigation, practice manual control and remain responsible for taking over or aborting if conditions require it.

What Starliner is actually doing during a docking
The ISS travels around Earth at roughly orbital speed, so Starliner cannot simply point at it and accelerate directly. The spacecraft must first enter a compatible orbit, adjust its timing and altitude, and gradually remove the distance between the two vehicles. This is called an orbital rendezvous.

For NASA’s Crew Flight Test, the planned journey from orbital insertion to the station was approximately 24 hours. That time allows a series of carefully timed engine burns, navigation updates and checks rather than one continuous flight. Starliner’s computers calculate the maneuvers, while the crew and ground controllers verify that the vehicle remains inside its approved approach corridor.

The docking target for the Crew Flight Test was the forward-facing port on the station’s Harmony module. “Forward-facing” describes the port’s orientation relative to the station’s normal direction of travel; it does not mean Starliner approaches like an aircraft landing on a runway.
How Starliner approaches and docks with the ISS
1. Separation and orbital setup
After Atlas V releases Starliner, the spacecraft performs an engine burn to establish its initial orbit. The launch vehicle places Starliner near, but not on, the ISS’s orbit. Starliner then uses its own propulsion system to raise its orbit and adjust its orbital period.
These first burns create the geometry needed for a rendezvous. A spacecraft in a slightly lower orbit moves around Earth faster than one in a higher orbit, allowing it to gain ground. Starliner uses that relationship to close the gap while conserving propellant and maintaining a predictable trajectory.
2. Catch-up burns and track refinement
Additional planned thruster firings refine the rendezvous path. Starliner progressively catches up to the ISS, updates its estimate of the station’s position and velocity, and corrects small errors that accumulate between burns.
The vehicle’s flight computers combine inertial measurements, external navigation data and proximity sensors as the distance decreases. The crew watches propulsion performance, communications and navigation displays while mission control evaluates whether the next maneuver remains safe to execute.
3. Approach under automated guidance
During the approach, Starliner’s automatic steering commands the planned translations and rotations. Sensors determine the station’s relative position and attitude, and the guidance system keeps the spacecraft aligned with the approved approach path.

“Autonomous” does not mean unattended. Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams monitored the spacecraft, checked manual steering and navigation, and demonstrated that they could control Starliner directly. NASA’s test objectives included communications, automated and manual navigation, thruster performance for possible aborts, and life-support operation during rendezvous and docking.
4. Waiting outside the keep-out sphere
NASA’s Commercial Crew Program press kit describes Starliner approaching the ISS and then waiting outside a 200-meter “keep out sphere.” The station’s flight controllers must clear the spacecraft to enter this protected region. The hold gives controllers time to review navigation, communications, vehicle health and the station’s readiness.
The 200-meter distance is a parameter of the described mission profile, not a universal rule for every spacecraft or every ISS approach. Different vehicles and missions can use different approach corridors and hold points under their approved flight rules.
5. The 10-meter hold and readiness checks
After clearance, Starliner continues toward the docking adapter. NASA’s mission profile calls for a pause approximately 10 meters from the Boeing-built International Docking Adapter. At this point, the spacecraft and ground teams conduct system-readiness checks before allowing the final approach.
Checks can include relative navigation data, attitude control, thruster availability, communications, docking-system status and the station’s configuration. Holding position is deliberate: it provides a controlled opportunity to stop the sequence before contact if a reading is outside limits.

6. Alignment with Harmony’s forward port
Starliner moves ahead of the station along the planned approach geometry and aligns its docking interface with Harmony’s forward-facing port. Relative motion is reduced to a very low closing rate, and the guidance system continuously corrects position and attitude.

At this stage, a small angular error matters. The spacecraft must present its interface squarely to the station’s adapter while avoiding unwanted lateral motion. The final approach is therefore a sequence of measured translations and rotations, not a single last-second steering command.
7. Contact and docking
Once alignment and closing conditions are within the approved limits, Starliner makes contact with the station’s docking interface. The contact marks the end of the rendezvous maneuver; it is not equivalent to merely touching the station. The interfaces must complete their capture and structural connection sequence before the spacecraft is considered securely attached.
For the Crew Flight Test, Boeing reported that onboard sensors and automatic steering brought Starliner to contact while Wilmore and Williams supervised the operation. Wilmore described the moment by saying, “It’s nice to be attached to the big city in the sky.”

8. Operations after contact
The planned test did not end at docking. NASA included hatch operations, configuring Starliner for its attached stay and moving emergency equipment into the ISS. The crew also planned a “safe haven” demonstration: they would close the hatch and use Starliner as a refuge if the station experienced an emergency requiring the crew to leave the main modules temporarily.
| Approach point | Mission-specific value | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Trip from orbital insertion to ISS | Approximately 24 hours for the Crew Flight Test | Provides time for orbital phasing, navigation updates and system checks |
| Keep-out-sphere boundary | 200 meters in NASA’s described profile | Starliner waits for station-controller clearance before entering the protected region |
| Pre-docking hold | Approximately 10 meters from the docking adapter | Final vehicle and station readiness checks before approach to contact |
| Docking port | Harmony’s forward-facing port | Designated contact point for the Crew Flight Test |
These figures describe the documented Crew Flight Test profile. They should not be treated as universal limits or as a performance record for all Starliner missions.
Who controls the spacecraft during the approach?
Starliner’s docking is a shared-control operation involving onboard automation, the astronauts and ground teams.

Onboard computers and sensors
Flight computers execute the planned guidance logic, calculate relative motion and command thruster firings. Proximity sensors become increasingly important as Starliner nears the station because they provide measurements of the ISS relative to the spacecraft, rather than relying only on predictions made hours earlier.
The astronauts
The crew monitors propulsion, navigation, communications and life support. They perform manual steering and navigation checks and can assume manual control if the automated sequence is interrupted or if mission rules require a crew response. Their job is not to “fly by hand” every meter, but to verify the system and be ready to intervene.
Mission control and station flight controllers
Ground controllers track both vehicles, assess telemetry and issue the clearance to enter the keep-out sphere. They coordinate the station’s configuration and can instruct Starliner to hold, retreat or abort if the approach no longer meets the flight rules.

NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams launched on June 5, 2024. Starliner reached the ISS and completed its first crewed docking on June 6. The flight was a test intended to gather data for certification, covering the Atlas V–Starliner system, in-orbit operations and the vehicle’s ability to return its crew.
The docking itself succeeded. The crew and the spacecraft demonstrated the staged approach, automated guidance and manual-control checks that NASA wanted to evaluate. A successful docking, however, was only one part of the certification evidence; it did not by itself authorize routine crewed flights.

After docking, engineers found propulsion behavior that did not match expectations and identified several helium-system leaks. NASA’s reviews examined the thrusters, helium system and possible return scenarios. Because uncertainty remained, the agency decided that Wilmore and Williams should return separately and that Starliner should make the trip back to Earth uncrewed.
Best Value
This decision illustrates the difference between completing a docking and demonstrating that every later phase is safe for people. A vehicle can reach the station successfully while still requiring additional analysis before NASA accepts the risk of using it for a crewed undocking, deorbit and atmospheric return.
NASA’s post-flight information described thrusters that did not perform as expected and the helium concerns as factors in the decision. The agency chose the lower-risk option for the astronauts rather than treating the successful rendezvous as proof that the propulsion system’s uncertainties were resolved.
What NASA says is next for Starliner
A later NASA development update said investigators found service-module reaction-control thrusters operating outside their engineering qualification. The update connected the performance problems with thermal conditions and design features. NASA and Boeing described thermal modifications and a further thruster-valve design change intended to address the findings.
The same update describes an uncrewed Starliner-1 mission as a planned validation flight. Its purpose is to verify the modifications and collect qualification data before future crewed missions. NASA gave a possible December 2026 or January 2027 window in that update, but that is a schedule target, not a completed launch, and it can change as testing proceeds.
Future crewed operations therefore depend on more than repeating the docking approach. NASA must evaluate propulsion performance, helium-system behavior, return scenarios and the evidence from the uncrewed validation mission before deciding that Starliner is ready for regular crew transport.
Common misconceptions about Starliner docking
“It launches directly to the station.”
No. Starliner first enters orbit, then performs a sequence of phasing and rendezvous burns. The ISS is moving continuously, so the spacecraft must arrange the timing and geometry of the encounter.
“Autonomous means nobody can intervene.”
No. Automation performs the planned maneuvers, but the crew monitors the approach, tests manual control and remains prepared to take over. Ground controllers also control access to the keep-out sphere and can require a hold or abort.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“Touching the station means the mission is complete.”
No. After contact, the interfaces must secure the spacecraft, and the crew must complete hatch, configuration and equipment-transfer activities. A mission can also encounter problems later in propulsion or return operations, as the 2024 test demonstrated.
“The 200-meter and 10-meter distances apply to every docking.”
They are the distances NASA specified for the described Starliner approach profile. Other spacecraft, ports or mission rules may use different boundaries and hold points.
Quick Recap
Key facts to remember
- Starliner reaches the ISS through an orbital rendezvous that took approximately 24 hours from orbital insertion on the Crew Flight Test.
- The Crew Flight Test docking target was Harmony’s forward-facing port.
- NASA’s profile placed Starliner outside a 200-meter keep-out sphere until controllers granted clearance, followed by a hold about 10 meters from the docking adapter.
- Guidance and steering were automated, but Wilmore and Williams monitored the vehicle, checked manual navigation and retained manual-control and abort responsibilities.
- The June 6, 2024 crewed docking succeeded, while thruster and helium concerns led NASA to return Starliner without its astronauts.
- NASA’s current plan calls for an uncrewed Starliner-1 validation mission and additional propulsion modifications before future crewed flights; the possible late-2026 or early-2027 window is not a completed event.
