Staking SOL trades immediate access for the chance to earn variable rewards. With native delegation, SOL is held in a stake account and cannot be withdrawn as ordinary wallet funds until deactivation completes; liquid staking gives you a transferable token, but selling it quickly depends on market liquidity and price. In either case, control of the keys and the risks of the chosen validator or provider matter.
Native staking: what happens to your SOL?
Native staking delegates SOL from a stake account to a validator. A stake account is a distinct account type from a basic wallet system account. While the stake is delegated and active, it is not available to spend like ordinary wallet SOL.

Delegation and deactivation take effect at epoch boundaries, not immediately. Solana’s staking documentation and staking FAQ say an epoch is approximately two days and that no more than 25% of total active stake can change state in one epoch. The FAQ does not state a publication year for these figures. Network-wide stake changes can therefore mean activation or deactivation takes more than one epoch, so the exact wait is not guaranteed.
How do I remove tokens from an existing stake account?
- Deactivate the stake, either in a compatible wallet or with the relevant staking tool. Deactivation does not make the SOL immediately spendable.
- Wait for the stake to become inactive. The transition completes at epoch boundaries and may take multiple epochs.
- Withdraw the inactive SOL to a wallet address. A stake-account lockup, if one applies, can prevent withdrawal until it expires.
Solana also supports splitting a stake account, so part can be deactivated while the remainder stays delegated. The portion left active can remain eligible for rewards.

How staking affects rewards
Solana’s FAQ says rewards are issued once per epoch, at the first block of the following epoch, and deposited into the stake account. Rewards are automatically redelegated as active stake. The annualized yield is variable rather than a fixed rate: Solana identifies network inflation, the share of SOL staked, validator uptime and vote credits, and validator commission as factors. Commission is deducted from rewards for validator services.
There is no timeless APY to rely on. Rates and validator performance can change, and Solana does not recommend a particular validator; its guidance is to do your own due diligence. Compare validator performance and commission, but treat any displayed yield as a time-sensitive estimate, not a promise.

Native delegation versus liquid staking
Liquid staking pools SOL and issue tokens that represent a share of the pool’s stake. Solana describes stake pools as a way to participate without managing individual stakes. Providers describe their own tokens and mechanics; those descriptions are not independent guarantees.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Consideration | Native delegation | Liquid staking |
|---|---|---|
| What you hold | A stake account delegated to a validator. | A liquid staking token representing a pool position; for example, Marinade describes mSOL as representing SOL in its pool, with value reflecting accumulated rewards. |
| Access to funds | Withdraw only after deactivation becomes inactive; timing depends on epoch transitions and network-wide stake changes. | May be sold or swapped on a market, subject to available liquidity, spread, price impact, and slippage; a protocol withdrawal can instead involve a delay. |
| Rewards and charges | Rewards accrue to the stake account each epoch; validator commission is deducted from rewards. | Pool-token value and reward treatment depend on the provider’s design. Provider fees and exit terms can apply; check current terms before using a pool. |
| Authority and custody | Stake and withdraw authorities sign different stake-account operations; whoever controls the relevant keys controls those actions. | The holder controls the token in their wallet, while pool operations and token mechanics introduce provider and smart-contract dependencies. |
| Additional exposures | Key loss or theft, validator performance, and the time needed to deactivate. | Native staking and key risks, plus smart-contract or provider risk and token-market liquidity or price divergence. |
Liquid-staking exits are not the same as instant redemption
A liquid staking token can make a staking position transferable and potentially usable in DeFi, but tradability does not guarantee an immediate exit at one SOL per token. A market sale is made at the available market rate and can incur spread, price impact, or slippage.

Provider-described exit routes
- Marinade mSOL: Marinade’s unstaking documentation describes instant unstaking as a swap at the current market rate, with fees and price impact shown before confirmation. Its delayed route follows an epoch-based claim process.
- JitoSOL: Jito’s FAQ distinguishes delayed unstaking from selling on the market and reports provider-specific fees. Its staking guide describes JitoSOL as a liquid staking token.
These are providers’ descriptions of their products, not guarantees of available liquidity or unchanged terms. Check the route, current fee, and quoted rate before confirming an exit.

Solana stake accounts have separate stake and withdraw authorities. The stake authority can sign delegation, deactivation, splitting, merging, and authority changes. The withdraw authority can withdraw undelegated stake and change authorities; it can also reset the stake authority if that key is lost or compromised. Solana’s stake-account reference emphasizes: “Securing the withdraw authority against loss or theft is of utmost importance when managing a stake account.”

This distinction makes the withdraw authority especially important for custody: a person who controls it can ultimately withdraw inactive funds and alter authority settings. A hardware wallet can protect signing keys when used carefully. Solana’s CLI staking reference mentions Ledger Nano use, and Jito’s staking guide lists Ledger as a compatible wallet option. These examples establish compatibility, not that any device eliminates risk. Secure the device and recovery material, and review transaction details before signing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat risks remain?
- Key custody: Lost or stolen signing keys can prevent access to funds or allow unauthorized actions. For native staking, the withdraw authority is particularly consequential.
- Validator performance: Uptime and vote credits affect rewards, while commission reduces them.
- Liquid-staking design: Pool contracts, provider operations, and token mechanics create exposures beyond native delegation.
- Exit liquidity and price: A token may trade below or above the value a holder expects, and selling can incur slippage or price impact. Protocol withdrawal timing is separate from a market sale.
- Slashing status: Solana’s staking reference states, “There is no in protocol implementation of slashing currently.” That is a statement about the protocol as described on the cited page, not a guarantee against other losses or a permanent condition.
Even without in-protocol slashing, compromised keys, mistaken transactions, validator underperformance, smart-contract problems, and poor market liquidity can still cause loss or reduce what you receive.
