Yes—losing an hour of sleep during the spring daylight saving time (DST) change can make some workers less alert, but studies do not show a universal workplace injury spike. One U.S. mining study found more and more severe injuries on the Monday immediately after the clocks changed; an Ontario study found no rise in compensation claims in the days after the change. The evidence supports preparing for possible fatigue, not assuming every worker or workplace will be affected.
Why the spring clock change can affect sleep and alertness
When clocks move forward one hour in spring, morning light arrives later by the clock and evening daylight lasts longer. Light is a strong cue for the body’s circadian system. The shift can make it harder for some people to fall asleep at their usual time, while waking in darker conditions may leave them groggy or not fully alert.

NIOSH says the body may take about a week to adapt to new sleep, eating, and activity times. The response varies: the time change does not affect everyone equally, and the evidence does not establish that all workers lose the same amount of sleep or experience the same safety effects. NIOSH’s 2022 guidance on adapting to DST and its 2016 worker guidance discuss these differences.
What workplace injury studies found
The direct evidence is mixed, and the studies measured different populations, periods, and outcomes.

| Study | Population and data | Time window and outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Barnes and Wagner, 2009 | U.S. mining injury records from 1983–2006 and Bureau of Labor Statistics time-use data from 2003–2006. | Reported more workplace injuries and injuries of greater severity on Mondays immediately after the spring transition. In the time-use data, miners slept an average of 40 minutes less on those Mondays than on other days. |
| Morassaei et al., 2010 | Ontario workers’ compensation claims from 1993–2007. | Found no increase in injury-claim incidence in the days immediately after the spring shift. |
The 40-minute result applies to the miners and Mondays examined in Barnes and Wagner’s study; it is not an estimate for all workers. The Ontario study’s claim-based result does not negate the mining study’s findings: one examined injury number and severity in a particular industry and day, while the other examined claim incidence over the days after the change. The available study records do not establish why their results differ. See the Barnes and Wagner study record and the Ontario study record.
NIOSH also notes reports of increased work-related safety-critical events, including near misses and human-related errors, around time changes, citing patient-safety research. That observation is not a universal workplace injury statistic. Broader evidence that shift work and long work hours can disrupt sleep and contribute to fatigue, mistakes, and injuries helps explain why alertness matters, but it does not quantify the effect of DST itself. NIOSH’s training material on long hours and safety risks addresses those broader fatigue concerns.

Who may need extra caution
Because people adapt at different rates, a clock change is not proof that a particular employee is impaired. Still, employers and workers can take the possibility of reduced alertness seriously, especially where a lapse could have serious consequences. NIOSH advises vigilance at work and while driving, and says workers should avoid operating machinery if drowsy.

The studies cited here do not establish a current national estimate of DST-related workplace injuries, nor do they show that every sector has the same risk. The mining finding is specific to miners and the Monday immediately after the spring change; the Ontario result concerns compensation claims in that province and period.

How employers can prepare for the spring transition
- Raise awareness about sleep, alertness, and safety around the clock change so workers know fatigue may affect them differently.
- Consider reducing critical or physically or mentally demanding tasks while workers adjust. NIOSH says adaptation can take about a week; this is a precaution, not evidence that every worker needs a week away from normal duties.
- Encourage workers to report feeling too drowsy to perform safety-sensitive work, and take applicable workplace procedures seriously.
NIOSH’s specific recommendation is: “Consider reducing any critical or physically/mentally demanding tasks to allow workers time to adjust to the time change, since it can take one week for the body to adapt.”

What workers can do before and after the change
- Shift time cues gradually. In the days before the spring transition, gradually adjust bedtime and other routine cues rather than waiting for the clock change to force an abrupt shift.
- Keep sleep and wake times consistent. A steady schedule can help maintain a regular sleep routine while the body adjusts.
- Seek early-morning light. NIOSH’s summary of American Academy of Sleep Medicine advice suggests getting morning light to help with the transition.
- Protect the sleeping environment. Light-blocking window coverings can help keep a bedroom dark as sunrise and sunset timing changes. This is an optional sleep-environment measure; NIOSH does not claim that it directly prevents workplace injuries.
- Use caution when drowsy. Stay vigilant at work and when driving, and do not operate machinery if drowsy.
