In the app, its published options range from approximately 24 kbit/s on Low to approximately 320 kbit/s on Premium Very high; eligible Premium listeners can also enable Lossless, delivered as FLAC up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz. Whether a difference is audible depends on the recording, playback chain and listening conditions—not bitrate alone.
What Spotify means by audio compression
Audio compression in this context means encoding music so it takes less data to stream or store. Lossy codecs reduce file size by discarding some audio information. Lossless encoding reduces file size without discarding source data; Spotify identifies FLAC as the format used for eligible Lossless playback.

Spotify’s format depends on where and how you listen. Its current settings table lists approximate rates for app quality levels, AAC rates for the web player, and FLAC for Lossless. Spotify’s developer documentation says most tracks in its embedded Media Delivery API use Ogg/Vorbis; that statement applies to that delivery context, not every Spotify client.
Spotify’s published music quality options
These are Spotify’s published specifications, not independent measurements of every track delivered. “Up to” describes the maximum Lossless specification, not a guarantee about the quality or resolution of a recording’s original master.

| Playback path or setting | Plan | Published format or quality |
|---|---|---|
| App: Low | Free and Premium | Approximately 24 kbit/s |
| App: Normal | Free and Premium | Approximately 96 kbit/s |
| App: High | Free and Premium | Approximately 160 kbit/s |
| App: Very high | Premium | Approximately 320 kbit/s |
| App: Lossless | Eligible Premium accounts and supported devices | FLAC, up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz |
| Web player | Free | AAC, 128 kbit/s |
| Web player | Premium | AAC, 256 kbit/s |
Spotify’s published numbers use different labels and formats: app rates are approximate, while the web-player entries identify AAC. A larger bitrate number alone does not prove one playback path will sound better than another.
Podcasts use separate settings
Spotify says podcast playback is approximately 96 kbit/s on most devices and 128 kbit/s on the web player. On mobile and tablet, the Low setting reduces podcast quality to approximately 24 kbit/s.

How Lossless playback works in practice
Lossless is not automatically selected on every device. Spotify says listeners must enable it manually on each device, and the service selects a playback format according to the listener’s setup. If a device, plan or connection does not support Lossless, the listener receives a compressed version instead.
- Check eligibility: confirm that Lossless is available for your Premium account and device in the Spotify app; market and device support can change.
- Enable the setting: in the Spotify app, open Settings and set audio quality to Lossless for the relevant playback or download option. Repeat on each device where you want it.
- Choose a suitable connection: Spotify recommends Wi-Fi and wired headphones or speakers on a non-Bluetooth connection for smoother Lossless playback.
- Check the transmission path: Bluetooth does not have enough bandwidth for Lossless transmission, Spotify says, and compresses the signal before sending it. A Lossless source therefore does not mean a Lossless Bluetooth connection.
Higher streaming quality uses more data, and higher-quality downloads use more storage. Automatic quality can change with network conditions, so a setting that prioritizes quality may be a poor fit for a limited data plan or a device with little free space. Spotify’s Audio quality support page explains its settings and trade-offs.

What listeners can actually hear
There is no universal threshold established here for hearing Spotify’s lossy compression or distinguishing Very high from Lossless. A listener may or may not notice a difference depending on the particular recording, their hearing, listening level, equipment and the entire playback chain. Lossless carries more source data, but that fact alone does not prove it will sound better in a given setup; likewise, it is too broad to say that 320 kbit/s lossy playback is always indistinguishable from Lossless.
The recording itself matters. Spotify processes delivered files internally, and the service’s maximum playback specification cannot restore detail absent from the source master. A 2024 Ethnomusicology Journal study examined selected recordings, including Turkish music uploaded in or before 2005. Its sample and methods do not establish the quality of Spotify’s full current catalog or settle whether listeners can hear a difference between today’s Spotify settings.

Why informal comparisons can mislead
A listening test compares more than codecs. The delivered master, quality setting, network adaptation, app or web player, Bluetooth or other transport, DAC, headphones or speakers, volume and room all affect what reaches the listener. If two versions play at different loudness, the louder one may seem clearer or better even when loudness—not detail—is driving the preference.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Spotify’s documented normalization targets are -14 dB LUFS by default, -11 dB LUFS for Premium’s Loud setting and -19 dB LUFS for Quiet. Normalization is not used by the web player and some third-party devices. Spotify for Artists explains these settings and exceptions in its loudness normalization guidance.
A more useful at-home comparison
- Use the same track and, as far as possible, the same playback device and output route for each setting.
- Disable Automatic quality or verify the quality indicator so changing network conditions do not switch the stream during comparison.
- For a Lossless comparison, enable it on the device and avoid Bluetooth; use the same wired headphones or speakers for both versions.
- Match perceived loudness before judging detail, and account for whether normalization is active on that playback surface.
- Listen for a specific detail you care about rather than expecting Lossless to sound categorically “better.” If you cannot reliably identify the setting across repeated comparisons, the higher-data option may not offer a practical benefit for your setup.
Why the codec answer depends on where you listen
Claims that Spotify “uses Ogg/Vorbis” leave out important distinctions. Spotify’s developer documentation says most tracks in its embedded Media Delivery context use Ogg/Vorbis. Its consumer support page separately specifies AAC for web playback and FLAC for eligible Lossless listening. Those are different delivery paths, so none should be treated as a universal codec for Spotify music.
Spotify’s Media Delivery API documentation describes the embedded delivery context, while the consumer quality table gives the published options for app and web listening.
