Speedrunners break a game open by studying how it behaves, testing unexpected interactions, and turning useful discoveries into routes that fit a category’s rules. A faster run may come from cleaner movement, skipping an area, or reaching a required event out of order—not necessarily from using a glitch. Whether a technique is legal depends on the game, category, version, and platform.
What “breaking a game open” means
It means learning where a game’s intended path is only one possible path. A runner might optimize ordinary movement, discover a way around a boundary, or reach a trigger before the game’s expected sequence. Those opportunities can change the route even when the runner’s basic movement speed does not change.

Sequence breaking—the act of skipping or reordering intended content—has been discussed in the context of speedrunning in O’Reilly Media’s “Sequence-Break Quake” excerpt from Gaming Hacks. That broad idea does not establish that any particular trick works in a particular game.
How a discovery can become a usable route
There is no established universal discovery method. A useful way to understand the process is as a series of tests: notice a possibility, reproduce it, check its value, and refine it. Informal community discussions offer anecdotes of both accidents and deliberate experimentation, but they do not show how often either occurs or represent every runner’s experience.

1. Notice an unexpected behavior or a route bottleneck
A runner may spot a movement interaction that seems to carry the character farther than expected, find a possible way through a boundary, or identify an objective that might be reached earlier. Another starting point is a slow or awkward section of an existing route: studying it may reveal that the section can be shortened, avoided, or approached from a different direction.
2. Reproduce the behavior and identify its conditions
A one-off surprise is not yet a reliable technique. The runner needs to determine what must happen for it to work—such as the position, timing, or sequence of actions—and whether the result can be repeated. Community anecdotes illustrate this kind of trial and sharing, but no measured success rate is established.

3. Find out whether it saves meaningful time or objectives
A strange behavior matters to a route only if it improves the run under its rules. A shortcut might cut travel, skip a section, or let the runner trigger an event out of order. It may also be slower, inconsistent, or irrelevant to the category’s required objectives. A route improvement is therefore a practical comparison, not simply a surprising discovery.

4. Share the setup and refine it for consistency
When a technique appears useful, runners can share what triggers it and work toward a setup others can reproduce. The aim is a dependable method that fits the category—not merely a clip of an unusual event. This four-stage outline is an explanatory model, not a verified workflow used by every runner.

Glitchless and glitch-allowed runs are different rule questions
“Glitch” does not have one universally clear boundary, and the meaning of “glitchless” can be difficult to define. An academic discussion in the 2019 Japanese Journal of Digital Humanities article “Wrong Warping, Sequence Breaking, and Running through Code” addresses that problem. A category label alone is not enough to determine whether a specific technique is permitted.
| Approach | What may change | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary time optimization | Movement or execution improves while the route remains broadly conventional. | The category’s rules and required objectives. |
| Sequence breaking | Content is skipped or completed in a different order. | Whether the category permits the resulting route and whether all requirements remain satisfied. |
| Glitch-using route | A behavior treated as a glitch in that game or community may enable a shortcut or other advantage. | How that specific category defines and restricts glitches; the label “glitchless” is not self-defining. |
These distinctions can overlap: a route change may be described as sequence breaking, a glitch, or both, depending on the game and its community’s rules. Check the specific category rather than assuming that every discovered shortcut is legal—or that every speedrun allows glitches.

Why the version, platform, and rules matter
A technique’s behavior and legality are tied to the run context. Speedrun.com’s submission guidance asks runners to state the game version and notes that game-specific restrictions may make a run invalid. Its beginner guidance recommends reading the full rules. The platform’s API documentation defines a run as “a finished attempt to play a game, adhering to that game’s ruleset.”

How to investigate a game without confusing discovery with legality
- Choose a category first. Find its current rules and required objectives; do not assume a technique is allowed because a video shows it.
- Record the run context. Note the version and platform, since submission guidance asks for the version and rules may impose game-specific restrictions.
- Observe and test a specific possibility. Focus on one behavior or route bottleneck at a time, and distinguish a repeatable setup from a one-off event.
- Compare the route outcome. Determine whether the technique actually removes travel, content, or other time-consuming steps while still satisfying the category.
- Confirm the rules before submitting. Read the full category rules and follow the submission requirements for that game.
This is an approach to investigation, not permission to use tools or methods that a category forbids. Whether analysis tools are allowed during an actual run is a separate, game-specific rules question.
