How SpeechJammer Worked—and Why There Is No Reliable Build Guide

SpeechJammer used delayed auditory feedback and directional audio in a 2012 research prototype. Here is what the study established—and why it does not provide a reliable build guide.

SpeechJammer was a 2012 research prototype, not a commercially available device or a validated do-it-yourself project. Its idea was to play a speaker’s own voice back after a short delay, creating delayed auditory feedback (DAF) that can disrupt speech. The published work describes experimental prototypes and preliminary findings, but it does not establish a dependable range, success rate, optimal delay, or safe construction plan.

What the SpeechJammer research actually proposed

Kazutaka Kurihara and Koji Tsukada’s paper, SpeechJammer: A System Utilizing Artificial Speech Disturbance with Delayed Auditory Feedback, describes returning a person’s utterances to them after a delay of a few hundred milliseconds. The authors write: “In general, human speech is jammed by giving back to the speakers their own utterances at a delay of a few hundred milliseconds.” Read the 2012 paper abstract.

The paper reports two prototypes that combined a direction-sensitive microphone with a direction-sensitive speaker. The intended effect was to send the delayed voice toward a particular speaker rather than broadcasting it indiscriminately. A contemporaneous WIRED report described the historical prototype as using an approximately 200-millisecond delay. That figure is a secondary description of that prototype, not a universal setting or a validated construction specification.

How delayed auditory feedback can disturb speech

When people speak, they coordinate what they intend to say with feedback from their own voice. Hearing the same words shortly afterward can interfere with that timing and monitoring loop. The SpeechJammer concept used the microphone to capture speech, applied a delay, and sent the result through a directional speaker aimed at the talker.

  • Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
  • Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
  • 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
  • Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
  • App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.

The mechanism is not guaranteed to work uniformly. Kurihara’s project page says the effect varies greatly among individuals and with habituation—people may adapt as they experience the feedback. The paper presents a preliminary study and identifies parameters for future formal investigation, rather than reporting a generally effective operating recipe.

Why a step-by-step “gun” build would be misleading

The available sources do not provide the information needed for a reliable, responsible construction guide. They do not establish a tested acoustic range, an effectiveness percentage, a population-wide response, a long-term outcome, or a proven optimal delay. They also do not document a current parts list, alignment procedure, software release, operating-system support, or validated safety limits.

Soundcore by Anker Q20i Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones, White
  • Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
  • Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
  • 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
  • Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
  • Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.

Accordingly, a diagram that appears to turn the historical concept into a modern aiming device would overstate what the research demonstrates. It could also encourage directing disruptive sound at people who have not agreed to it. This article therefore explains the research concept and its limits rather than giving instructions for building or targeting a speech-disrupting device.

What the prototypes were intended to do

Presentation and speaking practice

The project page describes presentation training as a proposed use. In a voluntary practice session, delayed feedback could be studied as a way to expose how a speaker responds to auditory interference. That proposed use remains an experimental idea, not evidence that the method improves presentation performance.

Conversation turn-taking and meetings

The author also discusses conversation turn-taking and meetings conducted under agreed rules. Those settings depend on informed consent and clear limits; the page does not claim that the system reliably or fairly determines who should speak.

The acknowledged misuse risk

Kurihara explicitly notes that a third party could use the concept to deprive someone of freedom of expression, and that deciding what speech is unfair involves the user’s ethics. Intended applications such as training do not by themselves make involuntary use acceptable.

Research status and availability

The project author states: “Our research is currently in the initial stages, and the speech inhibiting effect varies greatly with the individual and with accustomization, so it is not ready for practical applications and we have no plans for release or sales.” That statement means the gun-type prototype should not be treated as a current product, an endorsed commercial design, or a supported consumer platform.

Question What the sources establish
Underlying method Delayed auditory feedback: returning a speaker’s own voice after a short delay.
Directional hardware The paper reports two prototypes combining direction-sensitive microphone and speaker components.
Historical delay detail WIRED reported approximately 200 milliseconds for the historical prototype; this is not a validated universal setting.
Effectiveness No general success rate, tested range, or population statistic is established.
Commercial status The author says it was not ready for practical use and that there were no plans to release or sell the gun-type prototype.

Can you try the software concept?

Kurihara’s page says a free, simple application could be tried with a Bluetooth headset—a small wireless headphone-and-microphone device. This is an optional way to explore the software idea, not a complete parts list for the directional prototypes.

  • No headset brand or model is endorsed.
  • No current operating-system support or compatibility list is established.
  • The page does not verify that the historical application remains available or functional on present-day systems.
  • If experimenting, use only a voluntary, controlled setting and avoid directing disruptive audio at unsuspecting people.

For a generic headset, ordinary purchasing considerations such as microphone quality, comfort, connection method, and compatibility with your operating system are more defensible than claiming a particular model is “SpeechJammer compatible.”

What this means for readers looking for a practical device

If your goal is a reliable product that can stop another person from speaking, the evidence here does not support that expectation. SpeechJammer is best understood as an early investigation into DAF and directional audio, with highly variable individual responses and unresolved ethical issues. A consent-based speech-training experiment may illustrate the concept; it should not be represented as a proven crowd-control tool or a commercially supported build.
