It reads macOS audio and camera device state—and, on macOS 14 or later, process metadata—to infer when a meeting may be active. Those checks do not capture sound or images, so sigstop does not request Microphone or Camera permission for this detection. The signals are clues, not proof: unrelated apps and virtual audio devices can look like a call, and some muted meetings are invisible to the method.
What “zero permissions” means here
sigstop is a macOS break reminder. For call detection, it reads state exposed by CoreAudio and CoreMediaIO rather than opening a microphone or camera capture session. Its described Info.plist contains neither NSMicrophoneUsageDescription nor NSCameraUsageDescription. That means this detection does not require microphone or camera access; it is not a claim that sigstop needs no permissions of any kind for every feature.
CoreAudio exposes a device property named kAudioDevicePropertyDeviceIsRunningSomewhere. It indicates whether an input device is running somewhere on the Mac. The important distinction is that this is device-state metadata, not the audio itself: it can tell sigstop that an input is active, but not what anyone said.
How sigstop turns device state into a call estimate
- Find input devices. sigstop enumerates CoreAudio devices and considers devices with at least one input channel. It also listens for device-property and hot-plug changes, rather than depending only on periodic polling.
- Read whether an input is running. A successful property read yields a running or not-running state. If the read fails, sigstop treats the result as unknown (
nil), not as evidence that no call is happening. - Check camera activity separately. CoreMediaIO device objects expose an analogous camera-running signal. The implementation describes checking that state without prompting for Camera permission.
- Attribute activity to a process when possible. On macOS 14 and later, sigstop reads CoreAudio’s process-object list, bundle identifiers, and whether each process is running input. This can help identify an app such as Slack as a microphone holder, but attribution is not guaranteed to identify the meeting app or browser tab.
- Discount known non-meeting activity. Speech services such as CoreSpeech, Siri, and
assistantd, along with processes whose identifiers begincom.apple.speech., are excluded from meeting attribution. The app also treats a device bit that stays continuously true for too long as unreliable, since virtual devices and drivers can keep it asserted even without a meeting. - Require supporting evidence or limit the inference. A live input device becomes a firm block when corroborated by a camera signal, a process-table call-capable anchor, a manual meeting hold, or a busy calendar event with a video link. Audio activity without corroboration is capped before it becomes a softer deferral.
- Keep a hold after capture stops. A meeting can continue after the microphone is muted. To avoid ending the break block as soon as capture stops, sigstop arms a recent-call latch after sustained microphone or camera use.
Why an active microphone does not prove you are on a call
The running-device signal is deliberately broad. Dictation, Voice Control, a voice memo, browser audio, a game, and other unrelated activities can activate an input. Virtual-audio software such as Krisp, Loopback, or BlackHole, headset daemons, and some audio interfaces can also hold a device open. The raw signal therefore answers “is an input active?”—not “is the user in a meeting?”

Process metadata adds context but has its own gaps. A browser may report a helper process rather than its familiar app name: examples include com.google.Chrome.helper and com.microsoft.vcxpc. Safari page audio may appear as com.apple.WebKit.GPU, which does not tell sigstop which tab is responsible. Zoom may also keep a device active briefly after a call or while a user is in a waiting room; the implementation allows about 30 seconds of edge error for that behavior.
To detect persistently active devices that are likely unreliable, sigstop uses author-defined thresholds: a device bit that remains true for more than four hours, or for more than 85 percent of the last 24 awake hours after an hour of observation, is marked unreliable. These are engineering rules documented for the app, not thresholds validated against a real virtual device.

- How it Fits: On-ear compact design may feel snug initially—adjust properly and wear 30-60 minutes daily for the first week. Optimal comfort achieved after 1-2 weeks as ear cups conform to your ears. Take 10-minute breaks during extended use.
- Wired computer headset with foldable design; ideal for calls, meetings, online learning, and more. Compact headset measures 6.1" W x 7.2" H with 2.8" ear cups and 4.4" boom mic. Ideal fit for small to medium head sizes
- Flexible, adjustable boom mic can be positioned at any angle; unidirectional mic reduces the background noise to ensure crisp, bright conversations (Provided that your conversation is under the correct direction of the microphone)
- 32mm speaker drivers offer an immersive listening experience with clear sound quality
- One-touch mute/unmute with intuitive in-line control box; Using microphone, slide the button upward to unmute and enabled audio settings in your device. For USB connection, ensure the 3.5mm jack (4-pin) is fully inserted into the USB adapter. For direct 3.5mm connection, first remove the USB adapter from your device
What happens when you mute or leave a call
The recent-call latch is designed for the common case where a meeting continues after microphone capture stops. The documented timings are sigstop implementation policy, not macOS guarantees or independently measured performance.
| Condition | Documented sigstop behavior |
|---|---|
| Continuous microphone or camera use | After at least 45 seconds, the recent-call latch arms. |
| Device capture stops | An unconditional hold lasts 8 minutes. |
| Adopted anchor app is still running | The hold is extended by 12 minutes. |
| One hold and usage budget | A single hold can reach 20 minutes; the documented budget is 90 minutes per call and three hours per day. |
| Uncorroborated audio activity | It is capped at 20 minutes before becoming a softer deferral. |
These limits make the signal a bounded policy decision rather than an indefinite assumption that the user is busy. The 8-minute and 12-minute portions describe the hold budget; the 20-minute entry is the documented maximum for a single hold and the separate ceiling for uncorroborated audio.

When sigstop cannot detect a meeting reliably
- Muted, camera-off meeting: If you join muted and never unmute, with the camera off, there may be no capture activity to arm the recent-call latch.
- Screen sharing: Screen sharing is not detectable through these signals. sigstop does not request Screen Recording permission.
- Safari with Google Meet: Audio activity may be visible without reliable attribution to Google Meet or a specific tab.
- Virtual audio or persistent device activity: A driver or virtual device can make the running bit unreliable, while unrelated speech or recording apps can resemble call activity.
For a meeting that has no detectable audio or camera activity, the documented fallback is the manual “I’m in a meeting” hold, which can be time-boxed to two hours.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check the signals
sigstop documents a --doctor command that reports whether audio input, camera input, and process-level input holders are active. With no call active, the diagnostic can show that no input device is running and that no known process is running input. The output describes the signals sigstop can observe; it cannot establish that a meeting is happening when those signals are absent.
