1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRunning shoes should leave about a thumb’s width of space in front of your longest toe, let your toes spread without pressure, and hold your heel and midfoot securely without pinching. Check length, width, and heel hold separately: a tight forefoot may need a wider shoe, not a longer one.
How much room should there be in the toe box?
With both shoes on and while standing, check the space between the front of the shoe and your longest toe—which may not be your big toe. A useful visual guide is about a thumb’s width. REI and ASICS recommend this as a rule of thumb, not a precise measurement that applies identically to every foot or shoe. Your toes should be able to move rather than being pushed together or curled.

Too little room can contribute to bruised toes or blisters, especially on or between the toes. If your toes feel crowded, recheck both shoe length and the shape and volume of the toe box.
How should the width and upper feel?
The forefoot should not feel squeezed, pinched, or under pressure when your toes spread. Look for an upper that does not bulge or stretch tightly across your foot, and check that your foot does not hang over the removable sockliner. A narrow-feeling shoe does not automatically mean you need a longer size: ASICS advises that a wider fit may solve tightness better than extra length. ASICS explains how to assess running-shoe fit.

Width labels differ by brand and market. For example, ASICS New Zealand lists women’s B as standard, D as wide, and 2E as wider; for men, it lists D as standard, 2E as wide, and 4E as widest. Those are New Zealand conventions, not universal definitions. Check the specific brand and model’s size chart rather than assuming a width letter means the same thing everywhere. ASICS New Zealand’s width guide sets out its regional labels.
How should the heel and midfoot fit?
The heel and midfoot should feel snug and secure without painful pressure. Your foot should not slide around inside the shoe. If your heel slips or develops blisters, try a runner’s loop, also called heel-lock lacing, to secure it. If that does not help, the heel cup may not match your foot shape; REI suggests considering a narrower heel cup.

Do not solve forefoot tightness by automatically sizing up. A wider shoe can also have a wider heel, which may make heel slippage more likely. The University of Florida’s running-shoe sizing guidance recommends checking the fit of the whole shoe rather than treating length as the only variable. Read the University of Florida handout, “Seven Tips to Effective Running Shoe Sizing”.
How to check fit before choosing a pair
- Try both shoes on. Feet can differ in size, so choose a fit that accommodates the larger foot.
- Wear your running socks. Bring the socks you expect to run in, and bring any orthotics you use.
- Try shoes later in the day or after activity. Feet may be larger then, making it easier to spot a fit that is too tight.
- Stand and move. Check toe room, forefoot pressure, and heel hold while standing, then walk or jog briefly if the store allows it.
- Check return terms before outdoor use. REI recommends checking shoes at home and then doing one or two trial runs, but return rules depend on the seller. Confirm the applicable policy before wearing shoes outside.
Fit each new model rather than relying on the size you wear in everyday shoes or another brand. Brooks notes that brands and models can fit differently, and University of Florida guidance notes that sizing can change after a model update. Nike’s statement that its shoes aim to fit true to size applies to Nike’s own models; it does not establish a size equivalence across brands. Brooks’ fit guidance and Nike Austria’s fit article, originally published July 8, 2024 describe their respective guidance. Nike’s article also notes that running impact can cause feet to flatten and toes to splay.

What common fit problems can signal
These symptoms are clues to reassess fit, not proof of a single cause. REI’s guide discusses several signs that may warrant a closer check:
- Bruised toes or blisters on or between toes: Recheck length and toe-box volume; the shoe may be too short or too tight.
- Tingling or numbness: The shoe may lack volume, be too short, or be too narrow. Do not ignore symptoms that persist.
- Blisters at the ball of the foot: REI flags excessive width as one possible fit issue to investigate.
- Heel blisters or slipping: Try heel-lock lacing, then assess whether the heel cup suits your foot.
Persistent pain or numbness is not something a fit checklist can diagnose. Seek appropriate clinical advice if symptoms continue.

How to compare shoes if the fit is uncertain
Judge shoes on your foot, not by a size label or a single feature. Compare the toe-box shape and forefoot width, space at your longest toe, pressure across the upper, heel-cup shape and hold, and comfort with your intended socks and orthotics. Also consider whether the shoe suits its intended use, such as road, track, or trail running, or training versus racing. The fit guidance cited here does not establish one universally best shoe model.
