Camp shoes should feel comfortable and stay securely on your feet. In a closed shoe, your longest toe should not be cramped or pushed into the front, and your heel should stay put without rubbing. In a sandal, your heel and toes should sit on the footbed while the straps hold your foot securely without tight pressure. Size up only when the fit of the specific shoe calls for it; there is no rule that every camp shoe should be bought larger.
How should closed camp shoes fit?
Try them on while standing, wearing the socks you expect to use at camp. Your toes should have room to move without being crowded against the front, and your heel should feel secure without excessive movement or rubbing. A shoe that feels fine barefoot may fit differently with thicker socks or an insulated upper.

Hanwag’s general guidance for trekking and hiking footwear is to leave room for the toes and keep the heel secure. It mentions a finger’s width for its hiking and trekking shoes, but that is not a universal measurement for camp shoes. Hanwag also advises comparing the next half size up; a slightly longer fit may help reduce toe impact in lightweight, flexible textile footwear. Treat those points as outdoor-footwear guidance, not a formula that applies to every camp shoe.

How should camp sandals fit?
Set your foot naturally on the footbed, then adjust the straps. Your toes and heel should remain on the footbed rather than extending over its edges, and the straps should hold your foot without pinching or pressing tightly. A sandal that is too long or too wide may let your foot slide; one that is too short can leave your toes exposed beyond the footbed.

Construction affects what a good fit feels like. For example, The North Face describes its Explore Camp Shandal as having adjustable instep volume, a heel strap, a footbed texture intended to reduce foot slip, and a toe cap. Those features illustrate one sandal-hiker hybrid; they do not establish that it will fit every foot or outperform other designs.
When should you size up?
- Your toes are crowded: If the shoe pushes your longest toe into the front while you stand or walk, try the next size. Recheck that the heel still stays secure.
- Your intended socks make the fit tight: Try the shoe with the socks you will actually wear. If they cause pressure or crowding, a larger size may provide the needed room.
- You are between sizes and the model says to choose the larger one: Zpacks’ camp-shoe chart advises choosing the larger size when between sizes. The chart is hosted by an EU retailer, so check the chart for the market and model you are buying rather than assuming the advice applies to every camp shoe.
- The specific sandal and your fit preference point upward: Teva advises some people who wear a half size to size up in its whole-size-only sandals if they have wide feet or want more protective sole overhang.
Do not size up automatically. For those same Teva whole-size-only sandals, the brand advises some half-size wearers to size down when they want a closer, more locked-in fit. Follow the guidance for the exact model, because recommendations can depend on the shoe’s sizing increments, your foot shape, and how you want it to fit.

How to check your size before buying
- Measure both feet while standing. Feet can differ in length. Teva’s published method is to mark the heel and longest toe on each foot, measure the distance, and use the longer measurement with its size chart. Measuring toward the end of the day, when feet may be larger, can also help you avoid choosing a fit that feels tight later.
- Use the chosen brand’s chart. Compare your measurement with the chart for the exact model and market. Don’t rely on the size printed in another brand’s shoe as a substitute.
- Try on both shoes with camp socks. Stand and walk in them. Check for toe crowding, heel movement, rubbing, or pressure across the foot.
- For sandals, adjust the straps after positioning your foot. Check that the foot stays secure and that neither the heel nor toes hang over the footbed.
- Recheck the fit if you try a larger size. If it fixes toe crowding but leaves your heel or midfoot unstable, look for a different width or shape rather than assuming more length is the solution. Hanwag notes that looseness at the sides of the heel can indicate that the heel is too wide.
Choose the fit for the kind of camp shoe
“Camp shoe” covers different constructions, so consider how the shoe will be used along with its size. A closed slip-on offers more coverage than a sandal; a sandal offers ventilation and adjustable straps. Insulation, sock thickness, heel construction, outsole grip, weight, and packability can all affect whether a model suits your needs, but none replaces checking the fit on your own feet.

On uneven or wet campsite surfaces, consider outsole grip and underfoot stability as well as comfort. Backpackers carrying camp footwear may also care about weight and packability. These are selection factors, not reasons to accept a shoe that rubs, slips, or crowds your toes.
