Shiny odds are a chance for each eligible Pokémon encounter or egg—not a countdown to a guaranteed shiny. A commonly cited modern baseline is 1 in 4,096, but the actual rate depends on the game, encounter type, and any applicable bonuses. Breeding, the Shiny Charm, outbreaks, sandwiches, and resets do not work the same way in every Pokémon game.
What does “1 in N” mean?
A rate of 1 in N means each eligible roll has a 1/N chance to produce a shiny. Rolls do not build toward a guaranteed result: a Pokémon can appear on the first attempt, or a hunt can continue far beyond N attempts.

For example, 1 in 4,096 is a commonly cited modern baseline in references for Pokémon Sword and Shield and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. It is an illustrative rate for those games, not a franchise-wide rule. The exact rate can differ by title and encounter category. Smogon University’s Sword and Shield guidance and the PokéTools Scarlet and Violet calculator report the baseline and charm-adjusted examples discussed below; these are community reference figures, not official Pokémon-published statistics.
How much does the Shiny Charm change the odds?
In modern examples, the Shiny Charm improves the odds for many eligible encounters. Smogon University lists about 1 in 1,366 for ordinary eligible encounters with the charm, and the PokéTools Scarlet and Violet calculator reports approximately the same figure for that game. Treat those as game- and encounter-specific references: the charm does not apply identically to every title or every kind of Pokémon.
#1 Best Overall
Before using a charm-adjusted rate, check whether the target and encounter type in your particular game receive its effect. A rate for ordinary wild encounters should not automatically be applied to eggs, fixed encounters, or other special categories.
How do breeding and encounter methods affect shiny odds?
Some games add rolls or change the chance through particular hunting methods. These systems are specific to the title; a method or bonus in one game should not be carried over to another.
| Method or situation | What the references establish | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary eligible encounter | 1 in 4,096 baseline and about 1 in 1,366 with the Shiny Charm are cited for modern examples in Sword and Shield and Scarlet and Violet (Smogon University; PokéTools Scarlet and Violet calculator). | These are not universal rates for every game or encounter category. |
| Masuda Method breeding in Scarlet and Violet | About 1 in 683 without the Shiny Charm and about 1 in 512 with it, according to the PokéTools Scarlet and Violet calculator. | The method uses Pokémon from games with different language settings. These figures are Scarlet and Violet reference rates, not a general rate for all Pokémon games. |
| Scarlet and Violet wild encounters with outbreak progress or sandwich Sparkling Power | PokéTools describes these as adding shiny rolls for eligible wild spawns; the exact rate depends on the bonuses and combination used. | Do not apply wild-spawn bonuses to eggs without game-specific evidence. |
| Sword and Shield Brilliant Aura encounters | Smogon’s Sword and Shield guidance describes Brilliant Aura mechanics associated with battling or catching a species, with effects limited to certain encounter slots. | The cited material does not establish one rate that applies to every Brilliant Aura encounter. |
Masuda breeding and wild encounters are separate rolls. Likewise, Scarlet and Violet’s outbreak and sandwich systems are not the same as Sword and Shield’s Brilliant Aura system. Other games may have their own chains or outbreak rules, but there is no reliable cross-generation rate table established here.

Do resets improve shiny odds?
No. Resetting does not act as a multiplier on an individual roll. It can let you try an eligible fixed encounter again, or refresh a spawn, but only if the target is not shiny-locked and the game determines its shiny status again after the relevant save and reset sequence.
Reset behavior depends on the exact game, target, encounter type, and when that game fixes the Pokémon’s attributes. A reset guide for one encounter is not evidence that another can be rerolled. Confirm those details for the specific target before starting; the references cited here do not establish reset steps for every game or Pokémon.
How many encounters should you expect?
There is no attempt count that guarantees a shiny. If the chance is 1 in N on each independent eligible roll, the chance of seeing at least one shiny after k rolls is 1 − (1 − 1/N)k. This describes the probability across a number of attempts; it does not promise a result by any particular attempt.

The expected number of rolls to the first success is N under that same per-roll model, but that is an average across many hunts, not a deadline. A hunt can end much sooner or take much longer. Also, a higher chance per roll does not necessarily make a method faster in real time if each attempt takes longer or requires substantial setup.

Compare methods available for your game and target, rather than choosing by the smallest odds denominator alone. Check:
- the chance per eligible spawn or egg, for that exact game and encounter category;
- how quickly you can generate attempts and how much setup or in-game time the method takes;
- whether the Shiny Charm applies to that encounter;
- whether the target is eligible and not shiny-locked; and
- whether the method supports the encounter origin or other traits you want.
