A 2010 report described a laboratory molecular system in which the way a mixture was mechanically agitated was associated with different fibre-forming macrocycles: shaking favored six-unit rings, while tightly controlled stirring favored seven-unit rings. This was molecular self-assembly in solution—not biological reproduction or proof of how life began.
What was the self-replicating system?
A team led by Sijbren Otto at the University of Groningen studied short peptide sequences in solution. The molecules had phenyl-ring head groups bearing sulfide groups, which could link them into macrocycles containing three to seven units. The six- and seven-unit rings could recognize and assemble with rings of their own kind, forming tubular stacks and long fibres.

As the fibres assembled, the report said, they drew the solution out of equilibrium and favored formation of the six- or seven-unit ring. In that experimental context, the process was described as self-replication: assemblies helped produce more of the molecular structures that formed them.
What changed when the mixture was shaken or stirred?
The team initially had difficulty reproducing which fibre type formed. Under different stirring conditions, experiments sometimes yielded fibres made from six-unit rings and sometimes seven-unit rings, but not both in the same mixture. This is the outcome reported for that particular system and comparison, not a general rule that shaking always favors smaller assemblies or stirring larger ones.
How did mechanical force affect the fibres?
The article’s proposed explanation was that fibres grow from their ends. Breaking a fibre creates additional ends, which can support further growth. Otto put it this way: “The fibres grow from their ends, and you can help it to grow by providing more ends – by breaking the structure,”

In the report’s account, shaking selectively broke the weaker six-unit fibres. Their newly created growth ends allowed them to multiply and outcompete the seven-unit fibres for building blocks. Stirring broke both kinds; the seven-unit form was said to grow faster, so it prevailed. Otto summarized that comparison: “But if you stir the mixture you break both the heptamer and hexamer – then it is a matter of which one grows more quickly,”

What does this suggest about prebiotic chemistry?
The report raised the possibility that mechanical forces could act as a selection pressure among self-assembling molecular systems. Newcastle researcher Daniel Frankel, who studied prebiotic self-assembly, said: “The possibility of simple mechanical forces as a evolutionary selection pressure suggests a plausible step in prebiotic chemistry which could help to explain the formation of biopolymers and complex molecules in the absence of enzymes,”
That is a proposed implication, not evidence that this specific process occurred on early Earth or that it explains the origin of life. The experiment described peptide-based macrocycles in a laboratory solution; it did not demonstrate organismal self-replication.
