Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTelegram security depends on two separate things: protecting access to your account and choosing the right chat type for message confidentiality. Turn on Two-Step Verification and an app passcode, consider a passkey while keeping control of your registered phone number, and use a Secret Chat—not an ordinary cloud chat—for sensitive one-to-one conversations that need end-to-end encryption.
How secure is Telegram?
Telegram offers account protections and an end-to-end encrypted Secret Chat mode, but those are not the same protection. A passkey or Two-Step Verification helps protect account access; it does not make ordinary conversations end-to-end encrypted. Telegram says Secret Chats are its end-to-end encrypted, device-bound chat mode. Bots and Mini Apps are separate services, and Telegram says it cannot protect your messages from someone with physical or root access to a device running the app.

What should I turn on to secure my Telegram account?
- Review passkeys. In Telegram, open Settings → Privacy and Security → Passkeys and create one if it suits your device and how its credentials are stored or backed up. Telegram’s FAQ says, “With a passkey, you can log in to your device simply by entering a PIN code or biometric data like your Face ID or fingerprint scan.” Telegram’s FAQ explains the feature.
- Keep control of your registered phone number. Telegram says SMS remains a possible login route even if you have a passkey. Keep the account registered to a current number you control; a passkey does not make the number irrelevant. See Telegram’s passkey guidance.
- Enable Two-Step Verification. Telegram recommends it as an additional account protection. Find it under Settings → Privacy and Security; check the current app labels, which can vary by version. Telegram’s security FAQ addresses these protections.
- Set a strong app passcode. This adds a lock within Telegram, alongside the lock on your phone or computer. Telegram recommends it for users concerned about personal security or access to their devices. See Telegram’s security FAQ.
- Review active sessions. If the current app offers a logged-in devices or sessions view, check for devices you do not recognize and end unfamiliar sessions. The exact current menu path is not established here, so use Telegram’s in-app help for up-to-date directions.
- Secure the device itself. Use the device’s own lock and keep access restricted. Telegram says it cannot protect users from someone who gains physical or root access to a phone or computer running Telegram; see “Can Telegram protect me against everything?”.
Are Telegram messages end-to-end encrypted by default?
No. Telegram distinguishes regular cloud chats from Secret Chats and describes Secret Chats as its end-to-end encrypted chat mode. Do not treat an ordinary conversation as end-to-end encrypted simply because it is in Telegram. The distinction is set out in Telegram’s Secret Chats FAQ and its Privacy Policy.
How do I start a Secret Chat, and what changes?
Start a new Secret Chat with the person rather than assuming an existing cloud conversation can be converted. The precise taps can differ across Telegram apps and versions; use the current in-app help if you need a device-specific path. The key difference is that a Secret Chat is tied to the participating devices rather than syncing as a cloud chat across your devices.

| Choice | What it provides | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| SMS login | Telegram still allows SMS as a login route. | It depends on access to the account phone number and SMS delivery; keep that number current and under your control. |
| Passkey login | A device PIN or biometric can be used to log in instead of SMS. | Know where the passkey is stored or backed up, and retain control of the account’s phone number. |
| Ordinary cloud chat | Telegram’s cloud-chat service; its documentation distinguishes this from Secret Chats. | Do not assume it is end-to-end encrypted. |
| Secret Chat | End-to-end encryption, device-bound conversations, no forwarding, and an optional self-destruct timer. | It does not sync across your devices as a cloud chat. Security also depends on participant devices and what the recipient does. |
A self-destruct timer does not prevent a recipient from photographing the screen with another device. Secret Chat details are in Telegram’s FAQ.
What happens if I lose my phone or no longer control my number?
A lost phone and a lost phone number are different problems: a passkey can reduce reliance on SMS for login, but Telegram still allows SMS login and advises keeping the account number current and under your control. The available documentation does not establish one recovery procedure that applies to every device, operating system, or region. For your account’s situation, use Telegram’s current in-app help rather than relying on generic recovery steps.

Are bots and Mini Apps safe to use?
Treat a bot or Mini App as a third-party service, not as Telegram itself. Telegram tells users to check a bot’s privacy policy; avoid submitting personal information the service does not need. Its guidance is available in the bots FAQ.
