A cluster of GPS fixes is a clue—not proof—that an animal made a kill or fed there. Strong conclusions combine movement data with physical evidence, other sensors, or independent diet methods.
How GPS tracking turns movement into behavioral evidence
A GPS telemetry device records an animal’s location at scheduled intervals. Repeated, time-stamped fixes form a movement path that researchers can compare with habitat maps and, when the device includes them, measurements from accelerometers, proximity sensors, temperature sensors, or mortality signals. The U.S. Geological Survey’s review describes GPS and integrated sensors as tools for studying animal behavior and ecology: USGS review of animal-borne GPS technologies.

Researchers choose a location schedule to match the behavior and timescale they want to observe. More frequent fixes can reveal shorter stops and finer movement changes, but they also use more power and create more data to store and analyze. The device, habitat, expected fix success, and study duration all affect what can be measured reliably.

How researchers detect and verify possible feeding sites
Find candidate locations in the track
For a predation study, analysts may look for clusters of locations, prolonged stops, or other movement patterns that suggest an animal remained near prey. These patterns help narrow down where to investigate; they do not identify the animal’s behavior on their own.

Visit the site and classify the evidence
Researchers can visit likely sites and examine physical evidence to determine whether a kill or feeding event occurred. A 2010 methods review emphasizes that statistical models estimating whether a cluster is a kill site help direct field effort; they do not replace a site visit: Royal Society review of GPS movement data in predation studies.
Estimate time at prey and time between kills
Once sites are validated, researchers can use the movement record to estimate handling time—the time spent at prey—and killing time—the interval between kills. They can then test whether these measures vary with predator traits such as age, sex, or group size, or with landscape conditions that affect searching, prey detection, and prey vulnerability. If prey density along a route is known, movement data may also help estimate attack success. These inferences become more difficult when a predator hunts several prey species, because a GPS path does not directly reveal every behavioral state.

What a Minnesota wolf study found
A pilot study used GPS collars to examine wolf predation on white-tailed deer fawns in northeastern Minnesota. It tracked five wolves and five deer during summers from 2002 through 2004. At known fawn kill sites, the wolves’ tracks showed at least 1.5–3.0 km of travel and 20–22 hours spent nearby. At known scavenging sites, they showed at least 0.7 km of travel and 8.3 hours nearby. These are results from that pilot’s known sites—not universal distances or durations for wolves: Demma, Barber-Meyer, and Mech’s 2007 wolf study.
The same study reported wolves traveling into deer summer ranges, moving at least 0.7–4.2 km within them, and spending less than one to 22 hours per visit. Under the study’s assumptions—a deer summer range in a pack territory with five wolves at least one year old hunting individually—the authors estimated that a range would be visited on average every three to five days. That estimate applies to the study setting and assumptions, not to wolf packs generally.

Why GPS alone cannot distinguish predation from scavenging
A predator may stay at a site after making a kill, while a scavenger may stay at a carcass it did not kill. GPS records where an animal went and how long it remained, but does not directly show how the food was obtained or what it ate. Field evidence can help distinguish events, while independent diet methods can add a separate line of evidence. A study comparing GPS cluster methods with scat analysis illustrates the value of combining movement-based inference with diet evidence: GPS clusters and scat analysis in carnivore diet research.
The approach also extends beyond terrestrial carnivores. Researchers have combined GPS and accelerometry to investigate feeding patterns and diet in a top avian scavenger: GPS and accelerometry research on an avian scavenger.
What can make movement-based conclusions unreliable
- Location error and missed fixes: GPS records may contain spatial error or omit scheduled locations. The USGS stated that animal-borne GPS technology could achieve accuracy up to 30 m in its 2010 publication summary, but that is not a guarantee for every device, animal, or habitat: USGS technology review.
- Filtering can discard useful behavior: A USGS-indexed evaluation found that, under its sampled conditions, screening questionable locations removed movement information while producing only minor accuracy gains. It also warned that screening could bias retained locations toward open terrain and vegetation: USGS-indexed evaluation of GPS location-error screening. The result is context-dependent, but it cautions against applying automatic filters without considering their effects.
- Sampling schedule limits event detail: If fixes are too far apart for the event being studied, a brief stop or movement change may not be captured. A denser schedule improves temporal detail at the cost of power and data demands.
- Equipment effects can resemble biology: Device configuration and data quality can shape apparent movement patterns. Analysts need to account for telemetry limitations before interpreting a change as a change in animal behavior: Review of technology effects in GPS telemetry studies.
What to consider when designing a tracking study
A defensible study starts with the behavior and timescale of interest, then matches the tracking setup and validation plan to that question.

- Set a location interval that can capture the expected duration of the events being studied.
- Consider expected fix success and accuracy in the target habitat, as well as monitoring duration.
- Choose any additional sensors—such as accelerometers or proximity sensors—for a specific behavioral question rather than assuming GPS alone will reveal it.
- Plan for device power, storage, and data-transfer needs alongside the desired temporal detail.
- Decide how candidate feeding or kill sites can be checked on the ground, and which independent evidence can help interpret diet or distinguish predation from scavenging.
