Scientists measure Antarctic snow algae by combining field observations, snow samples, reflectance measurements and microscopy with satellite imagery. Fieldwork provides direct measurements of algae and snow properties; satellites extend those observations across much larger areas. The resulting maps estimate where surface-visible blooms occur and how much biomass they represent. Spectral measurements also show that algal patches reflect less sunlight than clean snow, a change that can increase absorbed energy and contribute to melt—but does not, by itself, prove that algae caused a particular melt event.
Why measuring snow algae takes more than satellite images
Snow algae are microscopic organisms that can grow in snow and give it visible colors, including green and red. Their pigments absorb some wavelengths of light, changing the snow’s spectral reflectance: the fraction of incoming light reflected from its surface. Because snow normally reflects a large share of sunlight, even a localized change in reflectance matters to scientists studying the energy balance of Antarctic coastal environments.

There is no single measurement that answers every question. A microscope can establish how many cells were present in a collected sample, but only at the sampling location. A spectrometer can record how that snow reflects light, but its signal is not itself a cell count. Satellite imagery can cover extensive areas, but detects a spectral pattern rather than directly counting organisms. Researchers connect these measurements through field calibration, then interpret mapped area and estimated biomass with the limits of each step in view.

1. Locate and document the bloom in the field
Field teams identify visible snow-algae patches and record their locations with GPS. They can note the visible bloom area and environmental conditions, then collect snow for laboratory analysis. In the 2020 Antarctic Peninsula mapping study, field campaigns were carried out in the Ryder Bay/Rothera area in 2018 and on the Fildes Peninsula of King George Island in 2019.

The study’s sampling grid was designed to represent the 10 × 10 metre ground-sampling scale of Sentinel-2 imagery. That alignment matters: a satellite pixel averages the light reflected from an area, while a snow sample represents a much smaller place within it. Recording the sample location and visible bloom extent helps researchers relate local observations to the satellite signal without treating the sample as if it represented every square metre of the pixel.
2. Measure reflectance under controlled conditions
Researchers measure the field snow’s reflectance with a spectrometer, which records reflected light across wavelengths. In the 2020 study, measurements were taken using controlled viewing geometry and a white reference panel. The reference provides a comparison for interpreting the light measured from snow; controlling the angles helps reduce variation caused by illumination and observation geometry rather than by the snow itself.
Reflectance measurements are important both for characterizing the bloom and for interpreting satellite observations. Chlorophyll absorbs light in particular spectral bands. The 2020 mapping work used the relationship between chlorophyll absorption in Sentinel-2 bands and cell concentrations measured from field samples to estimate algae in satellite pixels. That relationship is a calibration: the satellite records the spectral signal, and field measurements establish how that signal corresponds to sampled algae under the study’s conditions.
3. Count cells in the laboratory
Collected snow is examined under a microscope. The 2020 study describes imaging cells and using automated particle analysis, with cells counted from a Neubauer-improved haemocytometer. This counting chamber has a ruled grid that allows a known volume of sample to be examined, supporting a direct estimate of cell concentration in the material prepared for counting.

A cell concentration is not yet a measure of biomass per area of snow. To estimate that, the researchers used the measured thickness and density of the sampled snow layer to convert the concentration into cells per area, then applied an average dry mass per cell. Each conversion adds information but also an assumption: the estimate depends on how representative the sample is, the measured properties of the sampled layer and the average cell dry mass used.
4. Use satellite spectra to map likely algae
After calibrating satellite spectral signals against field observations and cell counts, researchers can examine Sentinel-2 images for pixels whose reflectance is consistent with surface-visible algae. The 2020 study used imagery from February and March across multiple years, with cloud filtering and corrections for atmospheric effects and bidirectional reflectance—the change in apparent brightness when illumination and viewing directions differ.
The satellite step extends the reach of fieldwork, not its directness. A mapped pixel is an estimate based on spectral evidence and a field-derived relationship, rather than a laboratory count from every location. The 2020 study intended its sampling scale to match Sentinel-2’s 10 × 10 metre pixels, but small or mixed blooms can still be difficult to resolve within a pixel.
What each measurement can and cannot establish
| Approach | What it measures directly | What it is used to infer | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Field observation and GPS | Location, visible patch extent and recorded site conditions | Where to sample and how observations relate to a mapped pixel | Coverage is limited to visited sites and visible conditions |
| Field reflectance measurement | Light reflected from snow at measured wavelengths | How bloom snow differs spectrally and how satellite signals may correspond to field conditions | Results depend on viewing geometry and the sampled surface |
| Microscopy and cell counting | Cells in the prepared snow sample, expressed as a concentration | Cell abundance at the sample site; with additional conversions, estimated cells or biomass per area | A sample represents a limited volume and layer, not a whole landscape |
| Satellite mapping | Reflected or otherwise detected signals for image pixels | Regional bloom distribution, seasonal area and calibrated biomass estimates | Clouds, pixel size, snow cover and surface visibility affect detection |
| Reflectance and energy-balance interpretation | Differences in surface reflectance, alongside relevant environmental observations | Potential change in absorbed solar energy and possible contribution to melt | Darkening alone does not establish the cause of a particular melt event |
What the Antarctic Peninsula mapping study estimated
A 2020 Nature Communications study mapped 1,679 green-snow-algae blooms in its study area. It estimated a seasonal bloom area of 1.95 × 106 square metres and total dry biomass of 1.3 × 103 tonnes. These figures describe the study’s mapped and converted estimates, not a census of every snow-algae community across Antarctica. The biomass value in particular depends on the field calibration and the snow-layer and cell-mass conversions used.

The study also reported that 60% of observed blooms were less than 5 kilometres from a penguin colony. It linked bloom distribution with environmental conditions and marine nutrient inputs. These are study-specific distribution patterns and associations; proximity does not mean every bloom has the same nutrient source, nor does it establish one universal cause for algae growth across Antarctica.
The authors noted that many observed blooms occupied small, low-lying islands that may have limited room for range expansion. That is a concern about the geography of the mapped habitat, not a measured forecast that every bloom will expand or disappear in the same way. The mapped totals are also a seasonal snapshot: they should not be read as a fixed, year-round area or biomass.
How algae change snow reflectance and why that may matter for melt
A 2021 study in The Cryosphere measured spectral properties of coastal Antarctic red and green snow-algae communities and estimated their radiative forcing. Relative to clean snow, visibly green patches reduced snow albedo by approximately 40%, while red patches reduced it by approximately 20%. Albedo is the proportion of incoming sunlight reflected by a surface. The study also found a correlation between algal biomass and albedo reduction across the visible spectrum.

That provides a physically plausible pathway by which algae can contribute to melt: pigmentation darkens the surface, the darker surface absorbs more energy, and that additional energy can affect snow heating and melt conditions. The 2021 authors argued that algal radiative forcing should be considered in future estimates of Antarctic Peninsula ice-free expansion.

The distinction between mechanism and attribution is essential. Measuring lower reflectance establishes that the observed patches were darker than clean snow under the study’s measurements. It does not show, on its own, how much melt occurred because of algae at a particular site or whether algae initiated a specific melt event. Snowfall, temperature, sunlight, surface conditions and other environmental influences also matter. Evidence of darkening supports a potential contribution to energy absorption; a local causal claim needs evidence that separates that contribution from other factors.

Antarctic imagery is often affected by frequent cloud cover, leaving gaps in cloud-free observations. Summer snowfall can bury a bloom or alter the surface between field sampling and satellite overpass. If algae are covered by snow, an image of the surface may not reveal them. The 2020 study therefore describes detection of algae visible at the surface in the mapped conditions, not all algae present below the surface.
Snow does not scatter light identically in every direction. Its directional reflectance, mountainous terrain and low solar angles can complicate comparisons between pixels and dates, even when researchers apply atmospheric and bidirectional-reflectance corrections. Resolution adds another problem: a small bloom may be missed or mixed with surrounding snow within a pixel, so the pixel’s average signal can dilute its spectral signature. Conversely, interpreting mixed pixels as fully covered can complicate area estimates.

A limited set of measured sites must serve as the basis for interpreting much broader satellite coverage. The study itself identified the need for more frequent, higher-resolution imagery and additional field surveys to improve estimates. Cloud-free coverage gaps and surface visibility mean that a mapped absence should not automatically be treated as proof that algae were absent.

How newer satellite work broadens the time dimension
A 2025 ice-shelf study describes a workflow that combines Sentinel-1 synthetic-aperture radar observations for freeze-thaw detection with Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery for algae detection and seasonal comparisons. The two instruments contribute different kinds of information: radar observations can be used to track freeze-thaw conditions, while multispectral observations are used to identify spectral patterns associated with algae. Combining them offers a way to examine seasonal timing across larger areas than field sampling alone can cover.
This is a research workflow for examining patterns over time, not proof that algae alone caused ice-shelf melt. A relationship between algae detections and freeze-thaw observations can help researchers investigate when and where the signals coincide. It does not remove the need to account for weather, snow cover, image limitations and other explanations before making a causal claim.
How to read a reported snow-algae result
When encountering a map, biomass total or melt claim, first identify what kind of result it is. The wording often reveals whether the evidence is direct or derived:
- Direct observation: a GPS-referenced field patch, a measured reflectance spectrum or a cell count from a sampled snow volume.
- Calibrated estimate: a satellite pixel classified using a relationship between field measurements and spectral bands.
- Converted biomass or area: a calculation that depends on assumptions such as snow-layer thickness, density and average dry mass per cell.
- Physical implication: lower albedo means more solar energy is absorbed, all else equal.
- Causal attribution: a claim that algae produced a particular amount of melt or caused a specific event; reflectance evidence alone is insufficient for that conclusion.
Keeping these categories separate makes the science easier to interpret. A large mapped area can be meaningful without being a direct census, and evidence for a melt mechanism can be important without showing that algae were the sole or dominant cause of melt in a given place.
