The 2021 demonstration measured electrons emitted from a specific dye-on-surface system; it was not a camera continuously filming arbitrary molecules or chemical reactions.
What the experiment measured
In a study published in Science on 5 March 2021, Robert Wallauer and colleagues extended photoemission orbital tomography to excited molecular states. They combined time-resolved photoemission using high laser harmonics with a momentum microscope, measuring the full momentum-space distribution of transiently excited electrons. The result linked excited-state dynamics with real-space excitation pathways. The PubMed record and abstract describe the study; the publication is in Science 371(6533), pages 1056–1059, DOI 10.1126/science.abf3286.

How the pump–probe sequence works
The explanatory account describes the sample as molecules of the organic dye PTCDA (3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic dianhydride) deposited on an oxidized copper surface. A first laser pulse excites an electron into a previously unoccupied molecular orbital. After a controlled delay, a second pulse ejects the electron into vacuum, where the detector records it. Varying the delay samples the excited state at successive points after excitation.
The detector measures the emitted electrons’ energy and direction. Those angular and energy distributions provide evidence about the spatial distribution of the orbitals the electrons came from; the orbital image is inferred from the photoemission pattern rather than captured as a direct photograph. Chemistry World’s account quotes study co-leader Ulrich Höfer explaining that the distributions “provide a good indication” of the orbitals’ spatial structure.

What “in real time” means here
“Real time” refers to femtosecond-scale pump–probe sampling: scientists control the delay between excitation and electron emission, then compare measurements at different delays. It does not mean the apparatus continuously records electrons as a video camera would. The result adds time-resolved information to orbital imaging, which had previously mapped occupied orbitals but not followed an orbital’s momentum-space dynamics through excitation.
Why the result matters—and what it does not show
- It combines time and orbital information. Measuring the transient electrons’ full momentum-space distribution lets researchers relate changes in an excited state to real-space excitation pathways.
- It is a specialized demonstration. The reported system used PTCDA molecules on an oxidized copper surface, not arbitrary molecules in any environment.
- Broader chemistry applications remain prospective. The approach points toward possible future studies of photochemical reactions and electron-transfer processes; this experiment did not demonstrate a general method for filming those reactions.
How specialized is the equipment?
In its 25 February 2021 report, Chemistry World attributed an estimate of €2–3 million to study co-leader Ulrich Höfer for the equipment. The report said only a few suitable combinations of femtosecond lasers and momentum microscopes existed worldwide at that time. That is a historical, attributed estimate—not a current price or an independently verified market quote.
